Our Cavapoo has every trait you described in your video. Gabby is 1 1/2 yrs . Weighs 15 lbs, mainly white with reddish brown markings. Loves ground chicken, carrots and broccoli. Very very picky with dog food and most treats. Thanks for sharing.
After having to handfeed dry food and my cavapoo barely eating, we switched to Freshpet Select Roll Refrigerated Wet Dogfood and she loved it! Never had a problem again. We use a Nylabone powerchew extreme chew bone for medium or large dogs (she is too strong for small or puppy sizes and breaks them!) to keep tarter off of her teeth since she eats only wet food. A Trick for the crate, cavapoos are so smart and love to learn. We turned her cage into a command like sit with a high value treat. "Wheres your Cage" means a small piece of cheese. Cage door stays open at first. Gets the cheese for going in. Then progress to close the door. Gets the cheese through the door. My dog Loves her cage! We leave the cage door open when we leave the house now and if shes feeling sad that we left, or needing comfort or to feel safe she lays in it. We nestled the crate into a corner on one side so shes feels protected. It really is her securing blanket.
Wow I’ve tried crate training my cavapoo and haven’t been successful yet, do you have any tips? She is about the same age and size as yours about a year and 7 months we give her soften kibble with blue berries and apple or what ever other fruit or veggies she likes what we have on hand.
She’s is very sweet, she does love learning tricks but she just HATES the crate so much
We tried to crate train her as soon as we brought her home but she wouldn’t sleep in it, we used to put her in the crate when we leave the house and keep it closed just for her safety so she doesn’t go biting any wires or anything else she can’t eat that could hurt her. This was when she wasn’t able to go with us to where ever we were going. She eventually calms down and takes a nap
But the first 30 min- 1 hour she screams and cries and yanks on the crate doors and I don’t know what to do and how I can make her comfortable
We give her toys and use encouragement and treats to help her understand if she goes in she gets a treat but she absolutely hates it.
We used to leave it open and give her food inside the crate and she was okay with that a little scared and jumpy but she started to go in and come out by herself
Still hates it. She thinks it’s jail
My Cavapoo came to me VERY picky! We adopted him when he was one year old. We got him a smelly high quality kibble and gave him meal times. We never give any human food. It took 2 missed meals but he gets excited when I grab his bowl now and eats every single time.
But you need to be sure they are hungry and understand you do t compromise with human food if they don’t eat their kibble.

I. Have a 5month old cavapoo lol she’s my baby she’s very hardheaded but she’s just so sweet & loves to play
I have a Cavashon puppy-bischon frieze and Cavalier, rather than poodle. We have had our pup for almost 8 months. we have not yet yet left her alone, other than so we can go to the bathroom. Obviously, we are both retired. We have to start soon, because she has to stay at my son’s house while my husband & I go to a wedding out of town. He has a dog, and she gets along fine with him, but it worries me anyway. But I am so glad to own a Cavashon. There is no way to explain how loving they are to their owners. Thanks for using Sophie to show us how to deal with the quirks of owning this little dog.
Your puppy sounds adorable and she sounds like she adores you both. I'm glad that you're getting her ready and comfortable with you guys not being around as much, I know it's hard for them to get used but it helps knowing that they'll be ok when you're not around. Thanks so much for watching! 😊
Also people need to be aware of the physical ailment risks of small dogs like cavapoo - particularily luxating patella. Our 18 month old cavapoo had to have major surgery to address his luxating patella. Let me tell you - this surgery recovery has been VERY difficult. The full recovery period is up to 12 weeks. I would highly recommend people to get pet insurance because the surgery is expensive. I'm happy to say that Charlie came through surgery well and we expect him to fully recover. We'd do it all over again - we love our fur baby.

I'm really glad you mentioned possible health risks as well, I find not enough people discuss what those can be for cavapoos. I'll definitely be doing a video all about that for sure!

This video made me laugh and smile throughout, we have a 2 year old cavapoo and she does all these 4 difficult traits, she’s a pure joy though I wouldn’t swap her for the world. Your pup screaming in her crate made me laugh, that’s the exact noise Luna does. She wouldn’t be crated though.. oh no, only our bed will do.

Hi Nessa, I faithfully watch all of your videos of Sophie! Such a special bond you two have. I am contemplating getting a Cavapoo this fall, but one of the things I worry about is separation anxiety, primarily because I want the puppy to be happy while I'm gone so I don't worry. I am recently retired and spend a fair amount of time at home, but again don't want to worry when I need to leave the house. It's just me so no one else at home to watch. The fact that the Cavapoo's bonds so closely is a doubled edged sword. I have identified an awesome breeder, I believe, who is already crate training them before you bring them home and many adopters say that their pup slept through the first night home in the crate. Do you think this early crate training would help prevent the separation anxiety from starting? I think being aware that this can happen and being careful to give them alone time in small increments is really important in the early days. You have thoroughly discussed this topic but would appreciate any additional comments from your hands on experience.
Thank you for your comment! 😊 I understand where you're coming from in terms of being worried about separation anxiety. From my own experience with Sophie, I started crate training her from the first day and it took a couple of months for her to be fully ok being in there without crying but now she has no problem being in there. This is great if there's any reason that she needs to be left in the crate for a short period of time, I know she goes in there and she's comfortable with it.
I don't know if crate training prevents separation anxiety because they'll know if you're home or not and that's what makes the difference. You really is have to focus on training them to be ok with you gone, like leaving for short periods of time to get them used to it when they're young, not making a big deal when you return, and spending quality time together (like going for a walk, playing, etc) before you leave. I think training them to be ok with alone time is definitely important and I'm still working on that with Sophie but that's because I do work from home full time so she's used to me being around and when I do go out she gets a little anxious but she's getting better and better with it. I honestly think it just takes time, patience and love. I hope this helps in any way possible.
@@NessaandSophie Nice to hear back from you, Nessa, thank you! Being aware that it can be a problem dictates getting on top of it early, giving them time alone in small increments in the beginning. The fact that the breeder I'm considering has them familiar with the crate going home should help with that transition and hopefully give some sense of independence/being alone in this space. She also said not to carry them around all the time despite how cute they are. :-) You're a great dog mom!
@@lynnehicks8610 That is interesting, none of the breeders I spoke with talked about introducing the crate to the puppies before their take home date, you'll have to let me know how that turns out. I have heard of not carrying your new puppy around too much, but I'm not gonna lie that's a definitely a hard one to follow. 😊 I wish you all the best with your future puppy!

2:20 - thanks for the vid! I'm considering a cavapoo, but am curious, when you say "don't leave them home for long periods of time", how do you define "long period"? I may have some follow-ups, but thanks in advance!
Maximum 2 hours. And I mean maximum. Ideally no longer than an hour and a half. They have separation anxiety.
My cavapoo puppy never ate, like ever just enough to stay alive, to the point where our groomer was worried. We finally found that she loves turkey so we make a homemade food, it’s brown rice, eggs, ground turkey, peas, carrots and coconut oil and she loves it, for the first time in her life she was excited to eat and still gets excited to eat and has finally gained weight and is now healthy. It was amazing finding something she liked as before that the only way she would eat was if we sat on the floor and fed her wet dog food with our fingers, and she still wouldn’t eat much.
That sounds pretty scary, I'm glad you guys were able to discover what her favourite meal was and now she's healthy again. I've heard of people making homemade food for their dogs, can I ask how you came up with which ingredients she needed to have a healthy diet?
@@NessaandSophie yeah it’s amazing how much she likes her food now. We found the ingredients through lots and lots of research on what’s healthiest for dogs but also reasonable for us to make for her.

I’m so glad I came across your video. I’ve had my cavapoo for 9 months and I have been feeling so stressed and guilty about his feeding. Just like you said he is very picky and will go for 3 days without eating his kibbles unless I mix it with something HE finds worthy🙄🤦♀️. I feel so stressed bc I’m always ready to rush him to the vet bc I think maybe something is wrong with him. As soon as I try a different topping (that he likes of course!) he will eat his kibble. He won’t eat the same topping twice in a day and he doesn’t lie store bought toppers. Sometimes I have to gently force some food into his mouth to get him to taste the food, sometimes he will go ahead and eat it right after or I have to feed him directly out of my hand. As frustrating and stressful this is your video has taken some of the stress away. I just need to be patient and not stress so much and work on finding other foods I can make for him. Thank you!
I'm happy to hear that you've found some relief in our video because I totally understand the stress you've been through. Everything (and I mean everything) you've mentioned when it comes to feeding your puppy is what I've gone through with Sophie and I actually didn't even know that cavapoos were picky until after I got Sophie. It's definitely been a bit of a learning curve and like you said, you constantly have to be on the look out for ways to keep things interesting to get them to eat. I'm going to be doing an update next week on what's been working for us recently but knowing Sophie and her cavapoo nature, I'm sure that will change again in a few months. Awesome video, and dead on accurate! They tend to be picky eaters, and need human attention. Crate training very young to establish separation experience is very important.
Now for probably a very long post about our own dog...
We have a 4-year-old Cavapoo, Ozzy, that I've trained on buttons (i.e. Walk, Potty, Chow Time, Play, Milk Bone and Treat) since he was about 9 months old. He doesn't understand complex concepts like many who anthropomorphize might claim, but he definitely has made many associations and can communicate on a rudimentary level. He’s learned over 120 spoken words (e.g. knows “left” from “right”, recognizes locations in the neighborhood like our “mailbox”, can identify 6 different stuffed animals by name, knows “upstairs” from “downstairs”, “Mommy” and “Daddy”, reacts to motion security alerts for “driveway”, “deck”, ‘backyard”, etc., knows the names of critters he likes to chase, e.g. “racoon”, “rabbit”, “opossum”, etc.), all of which I work with him on during daily interactions. But until just last week he has never combined two of these things into a single complex "grouping", I'll call it, nor did I think to train him to.
To preface, there's a couple of behaviors he's developed over time completely on his own. One is with his Play button. At around 2 years of age he started occasionally hitting his Play button for reasons other than wanting us to play with him like how I trained him (he’d hit Play, I’d tell him to go get a toy, after which he’d go to his toy box and bring one over to tug-of-war, fetch, etc.) I should interject that he has two toy bins, one upstairs and one downstairs in my office, and naturally from day one without any training (a benefit of his Cavalier heritage, I suspect), he won’t touch anything else in the house unless it’s from a designated toy box or if we hand it to him (my wife has stuffed toys lying around the house), including food. Food!
That’s right, from day one he wouldn’t touch food outside of his dog bowl, unless we handed it to him. Of course, he may tap our foot (something I taught him to associate with the word “please”) or lay his head on our leg staring to beg for food while we’re eating, or go nose-point at his “chewy milk bones” (which he considers a “treat”, as opposed to the hard milk bones, and yes he differentiates between “chewy bones” and “milk bones”) or the fridge for dog bacon, but he’s never tried to lunge for food, and we can leave a room to go get something confident that he won’t even attempt to get to our easily accessible plate of food. Again, this wasn’t specifically trained. He is a bit timid so it may stem from that, i.e. perhaps he’s just not wired to challenge for alpha status. Wherever that comes from, it’s probably an aspect of why he’s been so trainable and quick to pick up on “tricks” and words (including “parkour”). He’s very in tune with and dependent upon, people, and even prefers the company of people over other dogs (he has a handful of favorite people in the neighborhood).
At any rate, to get back to the behavior related to his Play button I referred to in paragraph two, one day he started to hit the Play button but instead of always coming to us with a plush toy, he would, unprompted, grab one of his chew toys (e.g. set of dog toy keys, bone, etc.) and take it somewhere by himself, throwing it around, pouncing, chewing on it, etc. To anthropomorphize it a bit, it’s as if he was announcing that he was going to go play with a toy, after which he’d proceed to do exactly that, but on his own, meaning without it entailing an interaction with us. More likely, this was the result of the programmed association of that button and playing with something, but I found it a fascinating development that he initiated himself.
At around 3 or so years old his desire to play with toys subsided. Perhaps he grew out of that urge? He’ll do it briefly from time to time, but it’s much less frequent. But it’s been replaced by a different, yet similar behavior, where he’s moved off of chew toys in favor of things he can actually eat, primarily milk bones (which before he'd carry around the house for a few days and rarely eat-he’s a very picky eater, and will spit out even Pet Fresh dog food I place into his mouth if he’s not in the mood, the little bugger). At that time, he started often wanting us to play with the milk bone a bit so he'd have to chase it, lunge and pounce, etc. before he'd eat it. He also developed a ritual of wanting to do this every night before he went to bed (side note: we crate-trained him for two years, gradually letting him sleep with us more and more, starting with weekends until now he just always sleeps with us).
If we weren't paying attention, he'd drop the milk bone (that’d he’d taken out and back into the room or picked up from somewhere he’d previously left it) at our feet and sit, perhaps give a little whimper, until we responded. Sometimes he’d pick it up and drop it again for emphasis. He’d never hit the Play button for a milk bone before, only push his Milk Bone button when he wanted one. Then last week, he did something unexpected. Before we’d even given him a milk bone, he restlessly strolled around poking at toys (something he does often around mid-evening timeframe while winding down), pondered his buttons for a moment, then he hit his Play button followed by the Milk Bone button, i.e. “I want to play with a milk bone”. I really thought it was just a coincidence. However, he's done it several times since then. I'm now all but convinced that he's associated these two things together, entirely of his own accord. He’s combined two separate and unrelated buttons, Play and Milk Bone, into the single idea of playing with a milk bone (again, which he likes to do before subsequently eating it).
I do not think dogs are capable of grasping complex concepts, and that humans far too often anthropomorphize (seriously, sometimes to ridiculous extents), but I also think they may be more capable than some give them credit for. A lot of it in my view boils down to how good the owners are at picking up on their cues as well as they pick up on ours (which they're very adept at), and doing so at a young age. It of course varies by breed, and Cavapoos in particular are a great blend of excellent human-centric interaction from the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel side joined with the sharp intelligence of the Poodle side. And consistent, daily interactions can help establish a form of communication that may then allow the dog to develop behaviors/cognitive abilities ever-so-slightly more advanced. This is all anecdotal based on my own observations, of course, but they are behaviors I've empirically observed specifically with Ozzy.

Got a cavoodle not sure if that’s the same I guess it is ..I don’t keep him inside the house he stays outside in his 5 star hotel and he is loving it yes they want to play allot and he is getting use to being alone at the end people have to make money and work nobody will quit there job to stay home with a dog my suggestion is if you love the dog just get it.

I’m considering getting a dog so just learning. What are we considering a “long period of time” for a dog?
Don’t get one unless you’re prepared to shower continuous love for them. They are very high maintenance dogs. Don’t get one if you are going to leave it home all day. They will go crazy. They need a loving family

I am an active 74 yoa female who purchased an Fb1 Cavapoo male...he just turned 3 yoa. I am a widow and he is my constant companion...he's more family than my immediate family because they live States away. I think he needs another small dog to focus on...a companion. I can't provide every need he has, and he has become so dependent on me to the point that anyone who enters my home becomes velcro to him. He craves additional attention, even though I try to take him everywhere with me. Any suggestions? Should I adopt a small dog similar in age to keep him company?

Question; for the separation anxiety, are there anxiety pills dogs can take? I’ve heard that dogs with anxiety take those, but is that necessary with this breed?
Cavapoos are a breed that can have separation anxiety and that's why it's incredibly important to start as early as possible with training them to be ok on their own and being away from you. That being said, I would not recommend adopting a cavapoo if they'll be left frequently alone for long hours at a time, as it can cause other issues. My understanding of anxiety medication is it's only prescribed when necessary for specific dogs and their needs, not based on a whole breed.

@@NessaandSophie I would agree. Our Golden Retriever was given Valium about 6-12 months before she crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Her back legs were starting to go and when she couldn't get up easily, she would panic and make herself physically sick.
Where did u get Sophie. A breeder or agency specialist about doodles?
Grooming chores were a surprise (I never had dog before) for sure. No issue with food so far but I only feed her raw meat (she loves beef liver and chicken heart I mix it with low fat mince,)
It depends on how long the hair is or what kind of haircut! They need to go to a groomer to have a professional groom also! Nails,ears,sanitary,feet pads and face or eyes! This does cost!
How are they with cats?

I also have a Cavachon (mix of Bichon and Cavalier). This one is our third. What has prevented all of these problems is adopting another dog close to their weight and energy level, which is why I am looking at cavapoos.That might sound undoable (having 2) but it is a trade off. We find two are not much more than just one. The one they decide is the alpha (head dog) just decides what they are going to do. The younger (usually) follows the older one. Since they realize what one doesn't eat, the other one will eat, there is friendly competion to finish their meals. They are always playing together or sleeping together and crate training was easy. As long as they had each other, they were fine (I give them a treat when they go in the crate, making it an exciting place, not a punishment). Just thought you ought to hear of another alternative!
I love my Cavapoo puppy. She's 8 months old but she is some kind of wild. Energetic is an understatement. She is very difficult to potty train. She will tell me when she has to go but sometimes she will go in the house. She ruined my hardwood floors. I had a puppy gate to keep her in certain areas. She can jump so high that it wouldn't hold her. I was washing dishes in the kitchen the other morning. I was literally in there for 5 minutes. I thought she was by my feet. Nope. She put a massive hole in my couch. It's completely unsalvageable. She's an escape artist. She's looking for an opportunity to run outside. I don't have a fence. She's extremely fast and it takes several neighbors to catch her. I spend a lot of time with her but I still have to work. I work from home and she wants to be entertained 24/7. She never calms down. With that said, she is very affectionate, loves to kiss, loves to be pet, loves new people, all people, And a lot of fun.

Maybe put an old shirt with your deodarant or cologne on it and place it in a crate or one of those nylon playpens for dogs. Put the crate next to you and then slowly move it away from your bed.

I am Thinking about getting a cavapoo. I know that them being hypoallergenic depends on there genes. What type of coat would a hypoallergenic dog have?
That's definitely a good question to ask a prospective breeder or vet but from what I remember from my own research is that dogs that don't shed, don't have hair or have short, single layer coats (less dander) can be considered "hypoallergenic". I would definitely recommend doing further research and asking people (like breeders) who are experts on dog coats and types.

@@Coldestmomentssss I don't think Sophie is 100% hypoallergenic because she does still shed a very small amount of hair.
Once you start giving them human food that will encourage the pickiness on dog food too.
most "dog food" isn't food, or is only just barely food. There's a lot of "premium dog foods" made from actual meat and vegetables, or you can just feed your dog actual meat and vegetables

Would this breed be good if the owner had difficulty walking? Slow pace only.
I think that as long as you're still able to take them for a walk (even at a slower pace) and add on some play time with fetch it should be ok. Maybe also consider adding in mental enrichment because it's just as beneficial as physical exercise.

Molly sounds just like Sophie, I guess they need just a little extra help when it comes to meal time.
My chihuahua was super picky with food. He ate what we ate and that’s ok. He would eat a certain brand kibble but hated any dog treats. I feel a cavapoo/cavoodle would be super easy compared.

That’s a great question. If you search up “how long can you leave a puppy alone” there’s plenty of websites that let you know how long they can be left alone for. The younger the puppy the less time, always remember that they should not be left alone for long periods of time.

Broke my heart to see her in a cage that small. Such an intelligent, loving and sensitive breed. Would never dream of locking ours up.
I recommend trying to crate training every dog. Because you never know if you need to travel with a crate or your dog needs to be over night at the vet. I personally prefer the plastic carrying crates though. Once trained for it to be a safe place they think of it as their bed and a place that's safe. Dogs must be able to stand up sit and turn around comfortably inside.
Ours go straight to the crate for sleep. It's like their own personal bedroom. My dogs don't mind it at all. They go in their crates many times without prompting.

“Cavapoo” isn’t a breed. It’s a made-up term to describe a mix of two breeds. And technically speaking, there are four breeds that can be involved: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and either a toy poodle, a mini poodle, or a standard poodle (though standards are less often used).
It’s a breed to me. To each their own.

To the naysayers I say this: yes, you may love your dog to bits......but it's a mutt. Nothing wrong with these dogs as a whole, but don't walk around pretending your dog is a purebred. Delusion isn't a good look.
@@avampirenamedenzithis is the truth! Many breeds have been developed over many years, carefully weeding out certain traits to form the current breeds. Mixing up two breeds does not form a new breed. It's simply a cross breed. These people don't know what they are talking about!
