    NICE VIDEO...keep posting porgy videos ..by the way what size hook is the 1 onz jig and the 3/4 size one what hook size are they ?

      I really don't know. They're smaller than on a typical blackfish jig, but are very strong and hold up well to the big ones.

    Hey john, i picked up of a few of these jigs at miller place bait and tackle to try them off a jettie on the north shore for porgy, for whatever reason i could not feel a bite but my bait was gone each time. I did have 50lb braid using a 7ft fast action pole. Any thoughts? I am new at using a jig like this. Thanks!

      This kind of jigging requires thin line! You want to use 15#. Probably 3/4-ounce jig.

    Im going to explore the blackfish bite this fall with my boat. In my reasearch, I see that anchoring over the fish, seems to be a standard practice?

    Amazing. Those fish bite a crab tipped bare jig.

    Hi John, an off-topic question for you. I fish same waters you do from Greenport. I am looking to replace my old depth/fish finder on my 1990's 23' Steiger Craft with something fairly nice. You discuss your fish finders occasionally and I am hoping you and your followers might make some recommendations. Thanks and looking forward to May 4!

      Nice classic boat. I bought a Humminbird Helix 5, but only because it worked with the transducer that fits my kayak. I like to move the unit between boat and kayak. I would have bought a higher grade model with side imaging if I was buying only for the boat.

    Hey John what low budget conventional Rod would you recommend for Bucktailing ocean fluke with bucktails up to 6 oz rapid jigging, I had an Ugly Stik Tiger Lite and it broke and can't find another one with the Fuji guides the company went cheap.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      I use Tsunami Classic casting rods. The H model for 2- to 4-ounce. The XH for heavier.

    • @mustluvkatina

      Okay thanks il go with the XH I broke two different tsunamis in the past so il give them a try again Thanks for,the reply and help John!

    John
    when you mentioned that you had wacky conditions , ( wind against tide), so then you said you anchored up at the stern
    could you say, educate me about the safety concerns you employed when you set down the anchor... I am a newbie and have read about the dangers of using an anchor in moving water
    please help me know what you did to insure safety when you dropped anchor,, i.e. how much cord do you let out after the anchor hits bottom?
    thank you

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому

      The current isn't screaming, so it's not dangerous. I'm not letting much extra line out because the anchor is set pretty firm on the bottom.

    I want to say thanks for all your great work I learned a lot from your fluke fishing work and now want to learn more about black fish jigs I make my own buck tails 100% and now I have picked up a mold for black fish 3/4 ,1 and 11/4 oz but I have never used gigs for black fish . I have mostly seen green with Orange, green ,white . I plain on powder paint what's your thoughts on color. I found on fluke white always wins anytime anywhere "for me" ,so what's a good go to , black fish jig color my hook size thinking 5 . Also seems like later in fall fish move deeper do you still jig for them ?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому +1

      Color - white or chartreuse. It's good to stand out. They're curious fish judging by the underwater video. Hook size will depend on what you can fit into the mold.

    Nice to see you back in the yak! Hope to see you in it more as we're losing Elias to NC. Can you say what size those hooks are? Looks about 3-0. I've been pouring my own fluke and tog jigs, and trying different sizes.

    Hey John, is that rod acid wrapped like the slow pitch? Didn’t look like it from the video but I could also be wrong

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 років тому +1

      Acid (spiral) wrapped is for casting/conventional rods. This is a spinner, so the guides are already pointing down.

    Another great video John. Is there much difference between the 3000 and 4000 of that tsunami fishing reel? And why did you decide to use your kayak instead of your boat just out of curiosity?

    Thanks John for another great video, I often fish the Northfork at Greenport or Southold, I purchased the jigs you present on this video from J&H , can I use them from the beach ? I surfcast as well as in my small boat, do these jigs work while casting from the beach? Thanks again, I learn so much from you. .. also is the middle of April a good time to fish from shore for Black Fish?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
