  • I messed up! I should listen to my own advice from time to time.... We're back with another dive gear review, this time looking at the Dive Rite XT Fins.
    If you want to support our channel, here is our affiliate link, at no extra cost to you: amzn.to/3pikiGY
    Note whilst this is an amazon link, the seller is somebody's local dive shop who are smart enough to use amazon as their e-commerce platform. I support small dive shops who innovate.
    I made a huge mistake with these fins and learned a lesson (again) that I have been teaching through this channel. There is no one set of fins to rule them all. These fins are the best for CCR diving, rebreather diving and technical diving in general (although I would want slightly heavier fins for diving twin aluminium set ups.)
    Let me know your thoughts on the Dive Rite XT fins in the comments!
    Thanks for watching!

    Woah woah woah...Back up...I hope you will be doing a video (or series) on your return to rebreather diving! Please talk about the why, the economics of it, when you would choose OC over CCR, and what considerations led you to go with the CCR unit you did!!

    I concur, and have a 20 year old pair still going strong. My other go-to fin is the Mares Quattro's... which I actually like better for rig diving in heavy currents.

    Right tool for the job. Clear and clean presentation.
    How about a video contrasting some of the classic fins like Mares, ScubaPro and such?
    Then there’s the split fins that are marketed to new divers because they’re “easier.”

    Great video and really true about having the right fins for the right job........so when is there going to be a video about your CCR ?

    When are you going to do a video on CCR’s? It seems to be a subject you have danced around with, but don’t have any dedicated videos about.

    I gotta try a pair, my go to have always been my cresi freediving fins in open water with students or my aqua lung for fun diving. Great video!

    I dive in springs and sinks mostly, and these fins work great for me as I'm mostly frog kicking or back kicking. I would say they are adequate for most flutter kick situation in which you are not chasing marine life, but they aren't as fast as my edge velocity fins.

  • @Jamescraigjohnson
    @Jamescraigjohnson Рік тому +3

    I almost never flutter kick, I tired these fins and I felt like I had 2 by 4s on my feet. I do no hammer my kicks, I finesse my kicking. But as James mentioned, these fins are everywhere, just not for me 🙂

    I love this video! I used my XT’s for the surface swims in my DM and IDC courses… I was miserable! 🤦‍♂️
    But, for my old and lazy self, whilst pushing a technical rig (CCR, twins or sidemount) with deco bottles, I’d rather have nothing else!
    Thanks for sharing your views 🤙

    I use these fins when cave diving. I'm actually pretty zippy in them as well... I usually get told to slow down.. They're great, powerful fins, in my opinion. I want to look into some freediving fins though when trying to do video in open water as I heard they're perfect for that.

    Great video. Thanks. I have bought fins that everyone has told me are the best, but quickly learned that swimming in current using flutter kicks was futile and exhausting.
    I wish more people would do what you did and advise that not all fins fit a standard kick style so big thanks

    😂 I personally can’t stand these fins. To me, they’re in the same box as split fins, novas, and the like. And I’m a big DiveRite fan. I have lots of their wings and regs. Yet I simply can’t stand these fins. But to each their own. 😁👍🏻

    Tried them for a similar reason of wanting lighter fins when diving CCR. Ended up preferring the Deep6 Eddy fins.

    I have been scuba diving with the same pair of Scubapro jet fins(bought when they first came out)for 50 years. I had to replace rotten straps about 20 times. For skin diving I use the Omer millennium long fins. Powering the fins rehires different strokes.

      …mmm I’ve been using Rockets for 50 years and YES I have replaced the straps quite a few times when needed - none of the straps have ever broken! I have tried out quite a few newer fins but I still prefer the Rockets !

    The XTs are my "big and heavy" fins :) I feel they're pretty long and mostly use them in open water, for enclosed environments I prefer the Deep6 Eddies (which are even lighter, more compact but still stiff and reasonably powerful)

    Hey James,
    Would you say these have taken place of your RK3’s? I know that the RK3’s are a shorter style fin used for mainly tech / wreck penetration etc where as the dive rite fins are a slightly longer style, or do these have their own separate place?

    James, thanks for the review. Please consider doing a video on dive workshops / workspaces at home. I am considering dedicating a new space in my home for my ever burgeoning collection of dive equipment, books, records etc and find myself more often looking over your shoulder at what's behind you than looking at your beautiful smiling face!

    james… you mention a couple of times that the XT’s weren’t the right fins for the sardine run. what would have been?

  • @c.patricksadowski9959

    So the immediate question, James, is why didn't you film using DPV's, instead of "flutter" kicking?

    so now i wonder: what would have been the right style of fins for the job where you missused them?

    • @mattvish2591
      @mattvish2591 Рік тому +1

      yes, sardine run is also on my bucket list... so what fins to use if you want to race with dolphin pods... maybe free diving fins?

  • @antoombom9584
    @antoombom9584 Рік тому

    Just give me a pair of freediving fins and I am good.
    Not doing any diving in tight areas, sometimes in decent currents and it’s just easier to swim with. So mine are perfect for me.
    Although I do have to enter via rocky beaches with fire coral, sea urchins and stuff like that. So, it would be nicer if I could just wear booties with them😭

    7min54s. "...... frogkick like all competent divers do".
    Not everyone is hppy using the frogkick. I see a amazing large number of divers who are totally inept , and their frogkick has been eaten
    I'm probably biased as i got into "serious" freedive at the same time i started scuba.
    One final observation. The frogkick is really difficult to use if you've got one or both hips.

    It's a shame these are nearly impossible to get in Europe given DiveRite don't have a distributor over here. DiveInn don't count as they lie about stock.

    I would think a DPV would be the corect gear for entering your local dolphin race atleast if you wa t to place 4th in a pod of 4 Dolphins and 1 happens to be ill or injred.. Poor dolphin
