The way I believe it to be is, darkness cannot stay where light is. The minute light hits something, darkness is pushed back. So in terms of this song, "when shadows blind" that could mean when darkness comes over their eyes, or they feel darkness overtake them, they just "let the light in" so to speak to draw back the dark feelings and feel happy and free again.
