    My Take on Monochromatic Painting
    Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
Monochromatic refers to painting with only one color… and all of its values. For me, a monochromatic painting scheme feels approachable, safe and intriguing. Maybe this is why it is so popular with interior designers!
So, a reference to a monochromatic painting means its dominant, overall color is ONE COLOR along with all the various values of that same color.
In the video - you will see me demo this point with two value charts:
    •Black to White Value Chart
This value chart shows the darkest dark (#10) to the lightest light (#0). The darkest dark value is the color right out of the tube.
    •Monochromatic Value Chart
This value chart shows three different versions of red. Red right out of the tube (which becomes the mid tone) with white added to make the red lighter and black to make the red darker - more options!
That’s it! One color and various lights and darks of that color. That’s your palette.
Another way to make a monochromatic painting is to wipe a transparent color over a black, white and gray painting - watch the demo to see me do this! You can add lights and darks of the same monochromatic color back into painting you started this way.
The second demo is starting a monochromatic painting, using the color red - using variations of the color red, along with black to darken and white to lighten.
No more excuses that you don’t have the right color! You can always do a grand monochromatic image = One Color plus black and white!

Thanks Bob. Always learn something new from you. This, to me, is also a good lesson in limited palette, and keeping the colour harmony with pleasing results!

I love you said, "refused to do it" cause I was there. Until I started to study the baroque techniques and found myself studying the value scale and found how essential it is.

I love mixing with black to desaturate colour, some people think mixing with complementary colours is superior. I mix both ways, mixing with black retains the hue and desaturates while mixing the perceived complementary colours almost always ends up changing the hue but desaturates to a lesser extent than black in general. I’m glad someone else likes black - it opens up a lot of possibilities and can instantly enhance a painting

Bob I’ve been enjoying your page a lot this week. I think I’ve watched nearly all of your videos I would like to ask you a question about copyright. I’ve been a professional artist now for several years and learnt many techniques from different artists. I recently see a video of a UA-camr doing exactly the same flower painting as you and didn’t mention you. I’m just wondering as you are a teacher how do you feel about people creating art in the exact same style or techniques you are teaching and therefore selling or showing and can you give me a long-term artists perspective on this. As I watched a vid of a artist painting poppies one evening next day I painted poppies with some of her techniques didn’t look the same I shared it with her and she went right off at me saying it was her painting “ can I not paint poppies again cos she painted them red and in the same composition?? I would LOVE your opinion on this as I have now painted several flower paintings and wondering if I’m allowed to sell them in your view cheers. Many thanks your page is fab your classes are amazing thank you.. I have my view on it but will love to hear yours xxx

Hi Karlena, You wrote a similar/exact question as a comment on another BobBlast - I am going to answer both with this response. In my in-person and online workshops, I encourage students to copy me and my techniques so they can learn - realizing that anything THEY do will be different from mine. Most students find their own voices after awhile. It is always nice to be acknowledged on social media, but as you know - not everyone will say where and who influenced them. When it comes to copyright, I may own a specific image I created, like a bouquet of red flowers on a green table in a yellow room. The copyright is for THAT image only, not ALL the bouquets of red flowers on green tables in yellow rooms. According to copyright law, you can exhibit and sell your work. Hope this helps.

@@RobertBurridge as an artist that also teaches that’s what I believe too. I created a beautiful watercolour rabbit that doesn’t mean other people can’t paint watercolour rabbits.. this argument seemed a little bit ridiculous with this other artist at the time. If you paint it you own it!! not one painting is the same as we all know by painting the same thing many times.. thank you so much for your reply LOVE your work.. I have armed my Artist belt with lots of your fabulous information. You are a treasure to this art world my friend much love from NZ
