Two of the child actors were also in It's a Wonderful Life, filmed the year before. The daughter here was Zuzu Bailey, and the mean kid throwing snowballs played a young George Bailey.

A good Christmas movie! Another four are Christmas In Connecticut (1945), Miracle On 34th Street (1947), It Happened On 5th Avenue (1947) and A Christmas Carol (1951) aka Scrooge in the UK. Just some personal favourites.

The little girl who played DEBBIE in this film played little ZUZU in "It's a Wonderful Life." And the boy who said Debbie couldn't throw a snowball as far as he could spit played Young George Baily.

Madison, a movie you should eventually check out is The Man Who Came to Dinner (1941) which stars Monty Woolley, the actor who played the professor. It's a fun movie that has an all star cast that includes Bette Davis, Ann Sheridan and Jimmy Durante , that could be classified as a romantic (screwball) comedy with many twists and turns.

Three other great older Christmas movies are:
"The Shop Around the Corner" starring Jimmy Stewart (the inspiration for "You've Got Mail").
"Christmas in Connecticut" starring Barbara Stanwick. A great scre-ball comedy.
"It Happened on 5th Avenue". A heart warming comedy.

A wonderful reaction to one of my favorite Christmas movies! Dudley helps everyone get back to their best selves. The bishop got lost in outward signs of success, but at the cost of almost losing what he loved, and the real goods a Christian should pursue. The widow was lost in feelings of guilt and loneliness over lost love. It's interesting that Dudley is able to use our human desires and refocus them back onto their right ends. It's so well written and acted to bring out these depths with a light touch. Legendary playwright and screenwriter Robert Sherwood wrote the novel and worked as screenwriter. A four time Pulitzer prize winner and an Academy Award Winner.

I have been waiting for many a Christmas season for someone to react to this special movie, which will ever bring a tear to my eye. When my mother passed away, I recalled what Dudley says about the cab driver: "...his children and his children's children shall rise up and call him blessed..." Looking the phrase up, I was unsurprised to find it a paraphrase of a Bible verse, Proverbs 31:28. I then used the Biblical citation as the anchor point of my eulogy for her.

Thank you for watching this wonderful Christmas movie. I notice in the comments that there are suggestions for " Christmas Carol," (1951) in which Alistair Sim gives the definitive performance as Scrooge. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is scarier, funnier, and more Dickensian than any other version.

This film is an excellent example that with all stories, whether Spoken, Written, or Filmed, it always comes down to the writing. If the writing is good, all else can be forgiven or overlooked.
Of course, to be a good writer, requires far more than a large vocabulary, or being able to string sentences together in a clever way. Being able to communicate well is important, but more important is having something important to *Communicate*.

In my top three Christmas movies of all time. Such a gentle, loving story with sweet characters right down to the smallest part. I adore the professor and his simple acceptance of the supernatural nature of his new friend. Sensitive performances by everyone top to bottom and a treasure trove of fabulous character actors filling out the perfect cast. All of them are familiar to me because I grew up watching each of them in dozens of movies filling out the casts of famous and not so famous films. Look a few up, for instance Elsa Lanchester who played the Bride in the original Bride of Frankenstein in 1935. Thanks so much 😊

Excellent reaction and review of this classic movie. You have accurately captured the essence of what this 1947 morality tale was trying to convey. You probably know that there was a 1996 version called 'The Preacher's Wife', starring Denzel Washington in the role Cary Grant played and Whitney Houston as the wife and Courntey B. Vance as the Bishop. Personally I prefer the original, but it's probably because of my general disdain for remakes, especially if they are remakes of classic movies, which I find to be heresy! In any case, it might be worth watching, if only to compare the two very different historical and societal circumstances in which they were both shot..., and also to enjoy one of Whitney Houston's few acting roles.

I love this movie as well. The first time I watched it, I had known of Cary Grant, but not of Loretta Young, so this introduced me to her. She had such a genuine, loving, infectious smile on her face throughout the entire movie. I've sought out other movies she was in, but none (IMHO) could match her performance in this movie. Also, Sylvester, the taxi driver, had to be a very good ice skater in real life to be able to stumble and act so clumsily on ice skates while staying on his feet. I think he was put into this movie to showcase his ability on skates.

I loved your reaction to this beautiful film, Madison.
A good film for you to react to at any time is, 'Heavens Above!' 1963 starring Peter Sellers, it's a comedy which deals with important issues, in a similar way to The Bishop's Wife.

Some may find older films as this corny at times or too sappy, but I find them more genuine, more inspirational. Same goes for Christmas music, I rather listen to the old classics than some newer artists trying to put their own spin on it, it just comes across too commercial too crass for me. I also recommend as others have "The Shop Around the Corner", i watch that one every year.

Originally the two male leads Grant & Nivens were going to play their opposite characters. It's was a question decided by the Studios poles that Grant, belief or diss-belief, had too much Sex appeal to play a Married Bishop.
I think it was the right decision, whether Grant was TOO Sexy or not, it would give a very different vibe (still being good) but different.
ps- the little girl actor also stars in another Christmas Classic --
    A Wonderful Life

A very nice reaction Madison. I'm an old guy (77), I haven't been to a movie theater in 20 years. Why should I when we have classics like this, no nudity, no profanity, no explosions and loud noise. And no silly plots from "stars" who many have never heard of. This movie and movies of this period are something the whole family can enjoy.

Hi Madison, just watched your reaction to The Bishop's Wife. Really glad you liked it so much. It's always been one of my favorite Christmas movies. I'm a huge fan of older movies. Love Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Stewart, etc. I have a suggestion about another movie that you may or may not have heard of. Bell, Book and Candle ....1958 Stars Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak, set around Christmas too. Lastly, if you want more Cary Grant try: To Catch a Thief, Operation Petticoat, The Philadelphia Story, Father Goose and I was a Male War Bride.....the list goes on. Love your reactions! Take Care.

This is one of my most favorite movies. Great reaction, Madison. Now, if you could just watch Bell Book and Candle (1958) starring Jimmy Stewart, Kim Novak, Jack Lemmon, Ernie Kovacs and ALSO Elsa Lanchester (cook). It was the inspiration for the 60's TV show, Bewitched and it is my other favorite Holiday movie. If you do, and are familiar with the TV Show, try to figure out which TV show character plays which of the movie ones.

Perfect observation that movies like this are low key, but the script and acting are top notch. This one is on my perfect movie list. I agree that Queenie is a scene stealer, my family had a short hair St. Bernard who was also a scene stealer! 😀

Hi Madison, thankyou, for being the first reactor of those I watch, to react to this wonderful Xmas film. I discovered it myself 10 + Yrs ago & have tried to watch it on Xmas Eve every year since. I have requested it a few times with several reactors because I wanted to see someone react to it.
But also because I wanted to share my discovery with younger people, so they could continue to enjoy it for longer than I have managed too. Thanks again, I hope more people get to enjoy it as I have. :)

Another classic movie I really love is The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. I highly recommend it; great love story, fantastic soundtrack. Another Cary Grant movie you might like is Bringing Up Baby. It's a screwball romcom with Katharine Hepburn. I think you might enjoy it.

Great reaction to a great movie. You really are amazing. You're real and wise analysis goes beyond just reacting to the movies. This one did have a great, deeper message. You're analysis was perfect. I don't know if you knew this already or if anyone commented but this movie was remade in 1996 as "The Preacher's Wife" with Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston. If you haven't sent it you should check it out.

It is an interesting movie on a lot of levels, and I'll bet you like it. Nobody else is likely to suggest it, but trust me.
