      Dear Dada
Guru or the one who gives Light, one who is heavy with Wisdom is an aspect of the Divine. He also represents the Compassion of the Divine that leans down into the earthly play to help man step out of the prison-house of ignorance. When the soul is caught up in the net of ignorance and darkness then it is this aspect of Wisdom and Compassion that is most needed. Since the Divine dwells within man, the Guru also dwells within man. All Gurus in fact derive from this aspect from the Divine and are His conscious or half-conscious representatives. However, since it is difficult for man to discover the Divine Master within He comes to us in a human form. The one in whom we feel intuitively the Master who is meant to connect us and lead us to the Master within is the Master without. Though all true (an important qualification) Masters come from the same Source, each brings his own angle of approach and depending upon his capacity and the mandate given to him to the level that he himself could rise. The Master meant for each one is different and comes to us answering to our inner need. His main work is to connect us to the inner Divine and help us in our inner journey. Those whose psychic being is awake and developed enough the contact and relation with the inner Divine can be direct without the need of an outer Master. But this is rare and even when one comes with a developed and conscious psychic being yet it is much easier if one finds the Master who would lead and guide his journey through the mazes of ignorance. The inner journey moves through many a landscape of which we have no or little idea. Some of these landscapes can be very deceptive and others slippery and precipitous. The Master knows these, at least on the route through which he himself has travelled. And since he has undertaken to lead us on the Path he helps us navigate through all these spaces of the soul until we arrive. It is then that we recognise that it is the Master within who had assumed for us this particular name and form to draw us through the Path meant for us.
There is another big advantage of having a Master in flesh and blood as we are. His life provides for us a living example since he has faced the challenges of life as we have to whatever measure and degree and yet arrived. It is also easier for us to trust someone whom we can see and hear through the doors of our senses and yet receive the needed psychic shock to turn within. But most importantly since we are not just souls but embodied beings and since each part in us desires to surrender and open, it is much easier to do with the Master without rather than the Master within. Our very body can bow down to him in a gesture of gratitude and love and share the joy of surrender. This is near impossible if we see and feel Him within alone. That is why surrender to the Master without is regarded as the surrender of surrenders, as exemplified in that wonderful couplet, Guru and Govind (the Divine, the guardian and Source of Light, one of the names of Krishna) both stand before me so whom should i bow first. Verily to the Guru since it is he who has shown me the way to Govind and led me there. However, rarest of rare is the fortune of someone for whom Govind Himself comes as the Guru. Such is the Avatar who is much more than a Master. With Him, there is a possibility of a manifold relationship, not just that of a Master and disciple but also of a comrade, a playmate, of father and mother, of the lover and beloved and many more. If one is fortunate enough to have the embodied Divine Himself as the Master and Guide then there are no limits to one's realisations. That is what Sri Aurobindo and the Mother are, not just one more Master among others but the Master of Masters, the Divine become human, the Avatar.
      Love
      alok

In 5:03 you say Sri Aurobindo was the first to declare that man is a transitional being. In fact, Swami Vivekananda and ancient rishis before him said so. The following quotes on man being a transitional being is found in the book “Inspired talks” by Swami Vivekananda. CWSV means “The complete works of Swami Vivekananda”.
    1. In time to come Christs will be in numbers like bunches of grapes on a vine; then the play will be over and will pass out--as water in a kettle beginning to boil shows first one bubble, then another, then more and more, until all is in ebullition and passes out as steam.... Inspired talks Vol 7 CWSV
    2. Every worm is the brother of the Nazarene. How say one is greater and one less? Each is great in his own place..... Inspired talks Vol 7 CWSV
The webpage vivekavani.com/swami-vivekananda-quotes-evolution/ contains many quotes on evolution and involution. Some of them are:
    1. If you look behind to the place from which you started, you will find that before you were an animal, now you are a man, and will be a god or God Himself in future..... Epistles Vol 7 CWSV
    2. All creation is moving onwards and upwards, obedient to the great law of spirit evolution, which is different from the evolution of matter. The latter is symbolical of, but does not explain, the process of the former. We are not individuals now, in our present earthly environment. We shall not have reached individuality until we shall have ascended to the higher state, when the divine spirit within us will have a perfect medium for the expression of its attributes.....Vol 5 CWSV
    3. The worm of today is the God of tomorrow...... Vol 8 CWSV

      Dear Sudip
Of course the idea of Evolution and Involution is all over in many mystic thoughts. I can add to the list of illustrious quotes you have graciously provided writings couplets from Mulana Rumi, Teilhard, Bergson, Saint John of Patmos. Shelley and of course the many Rishis who spoke about the ascension of man to higher and higher planes of consciousness. The Christian mystics and the saints of Bhakti marg very well experienced psychic transformation. The higher spiritual planes were certainly well known to the ancient vedic mystics. The tantric discipline speaks about the eighty four lakhs of forms through which the soul evolves and arrives at its human stage from where it can evolve to the very highest. There were even efforts and attempts at conquest of Death if not outright physical transformation as in the elaborate processes of kaya siddhi and Surya Vigyan. Nietze spoke about the coming of superman. Christ had foreseen the coming of the New Age when the Kingdom of Heaven shall be upon earth. The majestic procession of Dasavatara more than hints at the progressive evolutionary transformations that go on upon earth as it moves through phases of crisis towards a greater glory of the Spirit. One can even read the Ramayana as a tale of transformation from the monkey and animal man (Vanara) to a human being (Nara). Similarly the Gita hints at the Supramental Divinity even as the Isha Upanishad points the possibility and the way of Divine Life. What then is unique about Sri Aurobindo saying that ‘Man is a transitional being’ we may ask? Well it is unique in the following respects:
      1. Most of the time the evolution that is spoken of is the evolution of the soul and of man’s inner being towards his true divine nature. The evolution of form is regarded as secondary and subordinate. Its necessity is like the plant growing in the pot. When the plant is ready it is transplanted to heavenly soil. It escapes breaking the pot. Such is the importance of the human body that sadhana can be done only in it and through it but its ultimate utility is to help the soul evolve towards higher states until it is ready for the ultimate flight out of this world of sorrow and suffering, a veil of Maya, into the final liberation or Moksha. I am not sure if any mystic saw beyond Moksha / liberation from Ignorance / salvation. At least I am not aware of it and will be glad to be enlightened if there was someone who saw the appearance upon earth of a being / species higher than man. Again I am not speaking of an inner change and spiritual ascension which is a different thing. This ascension is indeed common to Sri Aurobindo as well but not as a gate of ultimate liberation at the end of the journey.
      2. There is some talk of a glorious body, a heavenly body in some tantric texts such as the Vaishnava tantra but that is in another world and not here. The only direct effort at physical ascension to heaven in a material body (and not a subtle body) seems to be in the story of Trishanku whose fate is well-known.
      3. Nowhere is it brought out with the force and emphasis on the here and now as with Sri Aurobindo. I am of course referring to the here and now with regard to the physical transformation so that the very body of earth transmutes into a divine body. Of course Sri Aurobindo made it abundantly clear that this now still would mean a few centuries of unfolding and the physical transformation is intended not for any personal glory but because without it there cannot really come upon earth the perfection and glory of a Divine Life. How can it be if the body is still a machine largely driven by animal needs and subject to disease and degeneration and eventual disintegration?
      4. Sri Aurobindo and the Mother not only hinted about it but took it up as a main part of their many-sided work and revealed the path to be followed through which mankind can move towards this intended / hinted physical transformation which would justify the long labour of nature and the logic and meaning of creation. With nirvana or moksha as a goal the whole aeonic labour of creation with all the suffering it entails appears to be a futile meaningless exercise at best and a monstrosity at worst. Why would the Creator venture into creation and all it subjects its creatures to (I know it is a human way of speaking) if the end (union with the Divine or Higher state or Mukti) is the same as the beginning. The soul was in its blissful state before the impulse to creation stirred the sleep of the Great Being resting upon the waters.
Of course the purpose of all this is not to argue about the greatness of Sri Aurobindo vis a vis other seers from the past or present. It is neither necessary nor does it help in any way to compare and contrast which is the usual way of the mind. Each of the luminous beings you mention and many more we may not even be aware of are great and wonderful and divine in their own right like the galaxy of gods centered around the One Infinite Mother, as Her children and portions born out of Her. Each has his or her unique place in the great and tremendous work of creation. I have personally enjoyed reading Complete works of Swami Vivekananda and have treasured the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna and many other mystics whose writings I have deeply enjoyed. However the question of creation remained unanswered. Mukti was too selfish an aim to be followed. Personal experiences including bliss were meaningless unless all could taste and share the deep liberty and joy of God. Nor does the work of terrestrial transformation hang in a vacuum. Many hints and efforts, partially successful attempts, documented or not must have been made. It is hard to imagine humanity was always satisfied with the ideal of personal salvation or of a group of believers or practitioners. It is also hard to imagine that the questions raised by Sri Aurobindo with regard to the Creator and the Creation were never raised. Surely they would have been. But the hour of the final answer seems to be now and the mantle of daring and doing the near impossible seems to have fallen as the divine work undertaken by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. What is hinted in the past finds its fulfillment and culmination in Them. It is somewhat like the difference between knowing that the sun as the source of tremendous energy exists and seeing the possibility of tapping its light and force to illumine our lamps, laying down the needed panels, making the whole thing fool-proof and then distributing it for free.
      Love
      Alok da

      Dear Krishna
To love Sri Aurobindo and the Mother comes naturally as we come closer and eventually identify with the psychic being within us. That is why the first focus should be in that direction, of finding the psychic being and uniting with the inner immanent Divine within us. The rest follows. It is the psychic being that can recognise the divinity within Sri Aurobindo, the Mother as also within Christ, Krishna and Buddha, It is the psychic being that knows to whom it must turn and follow as the Leader and Master and Guide. It is the psychic being that is not deceived by appearances and can love unconditionally and integrally. The mind and even the heart if unaided by the psychic light cannot truly love the Divine. their bhakti is too much tainted by demands for proof or miracles. So the only true way to love the Divine is to find the soul. In this process one is greatly aided by niskama karma (desireless action), service of the Divine in whatever way and form, the habit (not mechanical but spontaneous) of constant remembrance of the Divine by inwardly calling Her Name very simply as Ma, Ma, Ma. Meditating upon the Divine Mother's Presence in the heart also greatly increases bhakti. .
      Love
