Man, that gig clip sounded incredible. I got my first sax recently and the thought of being able to one day sound like that is inspiring. Great video as always :)
you sound AMAZING. I always liked your tone on tenor, but this brings you out so much better, like i just imagine hearing your tone on one of those popular old 80s songs with sax solos, or like grover washington on just the two of us, i love it!
@@FoolishFrankie of course, and ik you don't play your syos much anymore on alto, but i've been playing it for little shows in my town on my alto and i've been having a great time with it! all the best
Glad that the horn works easily for you. You'll learn to not make the micro adjustments needed to make a student horn sound good but adds to the range of the pro horn. My first pro horn was love at first note and I never looked back. Enjoy.
I was in high school and I'd hang out with the band. They were like you can't just hang out here and they shoved a tenor sax into my hands and made me play it. They taught me how to start reading music and press the sax buttons. It was very fun! I am forever grateful for that student sax! Later in college I took a music (theory?) class to learn about music. I was blown away. It was so much math in a beautiful way and made me forever appreciate what is really going on. I didn't stay with music or an instrument, but I know I hear notes in my head and I also can truly appreciate your videos.😊
Beautiful horn and beautiful sound! Also the “I’m playing adidas socks” thing caught off guard and made me laugh a lot Love from a Swedish bass trombone player
Just started playing as well as following you. Can't believe you were on a student horn before now! Appreciate your channel, very glad about your new horn.
Happened to my MKVI which already had some wear on it. Never used metal hooks again. (And the repair is to flip the neck strap loop upside down and solder fix the break in the loop. Sucks.)
watched this review a few months ago with dreams of getting this sax and my mom just surprised me with a graduation gift of this saxophone.. unbelievably excited! thanks for the great review frankie love the content
Congratulation to your new saxophone! You sound fantastic on it, like always. I wish to you many great moments, a lot of fun with the new tenor saxophone.
@@FoolishFrankie so basically all of the posts and rods in all saxophones today are either individually soldered to the body of the sax (post to body construction) or they all are soldered to one long piece of metal that runs down the length of the body of the sax hence giving it more weight (Ribbed Body construction)
Nope it has rib construction and is as heavy as any other Taiwanese/Chinese horns. The trick here is to remove all braces and details that keep the horn from damage, so that it’s lighter (and weaker). Check out Stephen Howard’s review of its build quality.
Congratulations Frankie! TBH, your new horn, as well as your playing sounds crisply sublime as always - absolute perfection all around. BTW, Isn't She Lovely in E major sounds even better than in D flat major - great job with the solo mate. Keep up the brilliant content, thank you so so much once again for sharing your love of, and passion for music with the world! All the best to you and yours, much love as always💗💗 P.S: If you've played that Stevie Wonder classic so many times - you shouldn't have to wait, let alone anticipate for a cue from the vocalist or bandleader to solo, because to begin with the harmonica solo or whatever is in the original arrangement. Plus, everybody and their mum emulates that when they're playing this professionally / for an audience anyway, hahahahaha! Again, well done - even better than that other short, like I said!
@@FoolishFrankie The rest of the band (sounds a bit fuller) only made that much greater! Well done to them, too. Keep up the great content, once again!
Congrats man! I look forward to seeing more vids of you using the new horn. Makes moving on from my VI and to something modern very tempting. Keep up the great work!
People underestimate how much of a difference a new horn can make. Switching from my (I play trumpet, so it’s kinda different ig) Yamaha Allegro to a Schilke HC2-S was like stepping into a whole new world of playing. The materials, tooling tolerances, weight, etc, all make a huge difference in the feel of a horn. I’m glad you like it so far, and hope to hear more on it in the future.
Never have I seen you showing off your sax skills so much! Jazzy tunes and great inflection imo Edit: you also seem a lot more loose when you're in your home than when you perform
5:53 this was just enough to get isn't it romantic stuck in my head, and every time it reminds me of the episode "11001001" of Star Trek: The Next Generation. thank you :)
Nice! I am considering getting a professional sax myself. For now, I am playing an Eagle tenor sax. I still putting money together, and I hope to get a professional one next year... Well, it is a dream!
So funny, you've got a brand new love toy, and you are looking at the straps, and the little card and the case.... Way more patience than I've got for sure!
I work (among other places) in a college theatre, and your reaction here is kinda like what happens when we let the pianists on the Model D for the first time...
Sounds very good! Funny you mentioned the right thumb hook. It's the first thing I noticed and at least the smooth ones are a pet peeve. My alto, tenor and bari were 'born' with brass hooks. My soprano had its plastic one replaced with a metal one from @MusicMedic. At least there's a solution if you don't like it.
I know this is a review of this particular sax, but would love to hear you play Nearness of You and My One and Only Love in their entirety. Sounds great!
Omg that sax sounds like I need to get me one. I have a Lyon and Healy Alto that is from the late 1920s but I need a new tenor sax to add to the repertoire.
I used to be a strong believer that the instrument has literally zero impact and whether it sounds good is all about the player. And there IS truth to that, as a bad player can’t make a good horn sound good and a good player can make a bad horn sound good. But when my grandpa passed away, he left his $5,000 professional trombone to me and having played it I have to say that my mind was partially changed lol it’s much easier to play a professional level horn and make it sound good than it is a student horn. I play sax well and play it regularly and give lessons, but I’m not a “saxophone player” in the fact it’s not my main instrument and I don’t like to spend money lol so for what I use it for, I’m content with the student model, but if it was the instrument I was making money with, I would probably buy a higher quality horn.
I neeeeeeeeed to get a jazzlab branded neck strap. The other one I have hurts😂 weird enough our lesson teacher had one this morning and did a whole presentation on it
I’ve been really thinking about get a nexus horn for a long minute.I have a student tenor and it’s great but would love one.I’ve already graduated high school as well
Really excited to see some tenor view with this beast! Glad you're chuffed with it. Btw, have you got any vids of your practice sessions? Would be really interesting to see what exercises and things you work on on a daily (or whatever it is) basis
@@FoolishFrankie Something to consider perhaps. You've got a few fans who haven't long started out so I'm happy to speak for them and say it's something we'd love to see when you get around to it
So i was iffy on buying one of these. (Ive heard some horror stories) But i think i realized your adidas socks are doing wonders for the tone on this thing. I happen to also have some adidas socks so im gonna try one of these out.
I didn’t even realize there wasn’t a high F# until this comment😂 I never use high F# for tenor altissimo fingerings, but the only thing I use it for on alto is altissimo Eb which is rare. I’m sure there’s a good alternate though
It is interesting for this price point some luxury items like a neck pouch and other cases that mainstream brands will put in. Found that interesting. For me if it doesn't have the white gloves in the case, it ain't for me 😉
True, it’s still a fairly new brand so maybe as they start to hear this feedback they’ll implement it. But for me if it comes with white gloves I don’t want it🤣
It sounded really good too! I don't know if you have an interest in doing so, but if you could make a video explaining how saxophone works, it would be nice lmao to me it's just magic at this point
Do you have any tips on altissimo and overtones that you think could help me on tenor sax? I've been trying to get better at them and so far my highest reliable altissimo note is a G but sometimes I can get an overtone to Altissimo C, and for overtones I can play up to the 3rd overtone.
I may be wrong but it seems like you're blowing a little harder to drive sound out more than your Eastman. Now that you've had a little time with it would you say that yeah it seems like that, or no?
So glad you dig the horn bro!! Enjoy!!
