Love the IKEA bag idea for one main reason. Airline policy is that if a bag is lost or damaged, they only cover the contents of the bag, not the bag itself. By putting the entire backpack inside an Ikea bag, it’s considered contents. At $20 for a three pack, even if I had to toss the bag at my destination, that’s pretty cheap insurance
I have seen a couple of other hikers recommend the IKEA bags and one or two mentioned an added benefit of using them. Apparently, travel insurance or airline policy (not sure which, or both) isn't great about replacing damaged backpacks that are checked by themselves but if you put the pack inside another bag and there is damage done, everything is covered. This is just what I have read, I haven't verified it myself, but if true, it's a nice added benefit.
I would add if bringing a stove to clean it really good to reduce the chances of it setting off the combustible materials detector. As an added precaution there is a document you can search for online that states the stove can be in your checked bag. Print the document and pack it with the stove
Thankyou for this brilliant video Jon, I have noticed rucskack care for check-in hasnt been talked about enough on the internet (which i find weird!) I had two questions- would a 65l osprey ariel fit in the Ikea storage bag? 2-is the Ikea storage bag compressible? I would like to pack it in as soon as I get my rucksack from the airport as I would be hiking with my rucksack, so storing it somewhere would not be an option for me. Thank you so much!
Hi Jon I will be starting my AT thru hike in March and thought it would be nice if I can post some videos for friends and family. Any advice you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I'm guessing you did editing on your phone which app did you use and wasn't it difficult on such a small screen. Thanks ☮
I use LumaFusion when editing on my phone, but I plan on only editing at home now because it’s so much easier. I use Davinci Resolve for that. Good luck on your hike. I’m so jealous!!!
@@raymaroney8355 One suggestion I have is to create one or two practice videos at home with the software so you know how to use it when you’re on trail.
Do you carry the used wrap with you on trail? For the trip home I usually won’t have access to plastic wrap, but on my last trip I just put it in a clear plastic bag and that worked great.
@@jonallenoutside most of the places I’ve been too have plastic wrap. Shipping companies usually have some if you’re in a pinch. I don’t carry it with me 👍
Has anyone had a problem with traveling with Ikea Frakta bag? I've just read a horror story that one guy was arrested at the airport because of this bag
What was the basis for the arrest? I’ve flown with the IKEA bag many times without issue and can’t imagine what would be wrong with it. It’s just a big blue zipper bag.
@@jonallenoutside there's a whole article about it, I think it was at CDG airport and the guy was said that those bags were for strollers only and weren't allowed at the plane, in general the staff made a big problem because somebody had a Frakta and now im scared haha🙈
I found an article about this - not sure if it’s the same one you saw. This happened in France in 2017. It’s hard to know exactly what happened. For example, if the passenger was being a jerk that may have triggered it. These bags are commonly used for air travel so if there was an issue i would think the internet would be littered with stories and the TSA would post some sort of bulletin.

Some airlines have big clear plastic bags at the check-in counter for odd items such as rucksacks, baby carrier etc. Thanks for your videos.
Jon, great subject for a video. Nicely done and it will help out for my flight out to San Diego this spring!
Fanny packs are underrated. So convenient and practical!

The IKEA bag is genius, thank you!!
The blue bag can also be used as a rain cover for your backpack on the trail
Never thought of that. Equipment that serves multiple purposes is always nice.
This is exactly what I was looking for!:) thank you:) I’ll be brave and strap it as well, fingers crossed it’ll be fine:)
Keep in mind that fanny packs are prime targets for pickpocketers. Especially in airports. Always keep fanny pack in front, not in back or on side.

@@jonallenoutside Yes that's the plan
Take a box of plastic stretch wrap to the airport, wrap the pack at checkin, then take it off at arrival. Do the same in reverse on the way back 👍

Great advice 👍
I tried to find this IKEA FRAKTA bag today, and it no longer has a zipper. I plan to use a big duffle.
@@braddeteau I’ve stopped using bags altogether. I just tie all the straps down and treat it like any other piece of luggage. Works great!
I use a packable duffle bag, 80L for 60L backpack or less.
I've stopped using any container at all. I just tie all my straps down and send it through like a suitcase.
Maybe give your Ikea bag to someone at the airport flying home after their trip (in popular wilderness destinations).
Great idea! I’d love it if there were hiker boxes at airports. IKEA bags, fuel canisters, bear spray, etc…
So I can bring a light saber but not my tent stakes 😂🤣
Glad someone noticed!

Don't buy the bag from Amazon; they are overpriced. I brought mine from local IKEA store CAD 3.99 each
