      Thank you for watching! I have found that it is so important to keep trying to learn new things in metal recovery and metal scrapping. Over the years I try to learn new things all the time and sometimes its painful to realize that something you thought was worthless and threw out actually had silver or gold plate or something.

    This is a hobby, no liscencing required. Just the motivation to help out the environment and make a buck while doing it!

    On any given computer I would expect to make about $0.80 in iron, about $1 in wire, about $.1.60 in aluminum, and less than a $2 in copper. Thats about $4.60. Then the motherboard would probably get at least $3, peripheral cards are usually good for about $1 each, peripheral boards from drives, ram, and cpu varies on age and quantity and size. Then the logic board off the hard drive, the platters get grouped for sale on ebay. So a good lowball in my opinion is like $10-$25 per tower.

    @moosescrapper5928  12 років тому

    Thats a great question! Unfortunately it is also one that is near impossible to answer. There are so many variables in pc towers. Even some very small differences in content can make a huge difference in money such as weather your cpu has a Al heat sink or a Cu one. The age of the pc makes a big difference as well. A general rule of thumb that I once heard on the goldrefiningforum was that you can expect to find at least $10 in gold in a desktop if you process yourself.

    Right? The final screen says after "all" was scrapped. There was still wire inside the power supply an the drives ribbon wires after I took off the gold plated connectors. After all was said and done, leaving out the weight of the pink plastic pan, it came to 1.2 lbs. As I said after weighing everything, I explained that I still had a few other things to take apart. I am not seeing where the error was. Can you be more specific?

    Thank you for watching, sorry to hear about your father. To answer your question about the hard drives in the older PC's they honestly would not have much value. HDD these days can be purchased for not much money and will have much more space on them. HDD's from the 90's will likely have less than 1GB of space, not even enough for todays operating systems. I would definitely look out for the Pentium pro cpu/s and sell the logic boards and cast aluminum. Hope that helps.

    hi moose. i have a friend that repairs computers and if there no good he lets me take them.I have done scrap for many years now and think that you are brill for sharing the no how that you have. thanks for the help.I have started to do my own videos and think that the scrappers in the uk are throwing money away. we have some guys going round and collecting scrap and they dont even sort it. There just getting steel price for the lot.wot a waste. I strip all mine down and sell it as the right metals. it takes time but its fun i think.keep up the good work.

    Thanks for watching and yes I do plan on making a video on the A/P method. It really is quite easy however here in maine it has been below freezing so I may not be able to do it until March. I would strongly reccommend the goldrefiningforum as a source for info on gold recovery. That is where I learned how to do it.
    Thanks!

    Hi and Thanks for watching. Did I say is was 20% gold? I just watched the entire video again and did not hear that. The PC's that I get are from a couple of large companies that only give me stuff that is fried. I am also not very equipped to test many things but do agree with you that parts if working are almost always worth more than scrap. After all, scrap is defined as the lowest possible value. Thanks!

    Hi and thanks for watching! If you are going to buy junk PC's off of people, you really can't pay very much for them if you still want to make a profit. There are a lot of variables like age, size etc. I would say, and am sure a lot of people might have differing opinions, but I would never pay more than a couple bucks for one. If you are clever, you can get people to just give them to you or pay YOU to ake them and destroy any information on them..

    hi, very informative, but I am wondering how much weight is in each pc, I have a chance to buy 50 computers for $100 or $2 each. is it worth the money and time I put into it to scrap these?

    Thanks for watching!! Its a little of both! I offer a service of secure destruction of digital data. Sometimes I just get the HDD sometimes I get the whole tower. I also have ads for ewaste. Now please also keep in mind that I do not recommend scrapping everything. I always try to sell the parts first on ebay. If a pc is water damaged, lightning strike damage, or fire damage, then I just scrap it. Even old video cards, modems, sound cards etc sell!!

    So to get the gold out of the USB plug, you have to take all the surrounding plastic off? Will the acid eat the plastic away? Seems like a lot of work just to remove the plated pins from the USB, RAM slots or any plug. Also, can you process gold fingers, pins and IC chips at the same time? In the same bucket? Im just starting to do this and I've found your videos are very descriptive. I just scrapped a old dell yesterday and today im getting 2 40" TV's for free. Please and thank you!

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  9 років тому

      brandon saunders Hi and thanks for watching! Yes, that is what is involved in scrapping a usb plug. Some of this stuff is time consuming unless you have industrial equipment. As for the second question, I get that a lot. People are always looking to speed things up I give the same answer every time. Techincally yes, you can process them all at the same time. Do I recommend it? Absolutely not. Every professional out there will tell you not to. Here is why, when you are processing something with chemicals, it is an exact science. Every variable you add changes the outcome. Not all plastics survive the acids and can melt into goo which can trap gold. Also, some metals will kill your acid solution very quickly, the list of reasons to not do it goes on and on. Bottom line, anything worth doing is worth doing right. Best of luck to you, hope yo uhave fun recovering some gold!

    First off I have to say, your videos are very interesting. My hobby is building computers and it's interesting to see you scrap the components that I use in my builds (well, more updated versions but nonetheless the same parts) and I was wondering how you come across these old computers. Is it something you go out looking for or is it just something you come across from time to time?

  • @moosescrapper5928

    I think that falls into the "other" category. You have the green large socket MB's, the green small socket MB's, then the other mother boards. These are typically worth the least, but still are more valuable than random circuit boards.

    Hello, first i wanted to say great video. Second i did have a question, my father b4 he passed was planning on making a server (i think) but would b upgrading parts from the machines. While i do know a decent amount about computers i know nothing like he did. Anyway, he had collected quite a few older model desktop towers (he was working with computers since about 91 or so) and i can't do much with them, would it be better for me to scrap or see if they work and sell (- the hard drives). Thanks!

  • @moosescrapper5928
    @moosescrapper5928  11 років тому

    Right. With the exception of scrapping to make a video, I always test items to see if they work and then try to sell them first. Scrap is the lowest value of an item. Thanks for watching!

  • @moosescrapper5928
    @moosescrapper5928  11 років тому

    Wow!! Desktop pc's? You would DEFINITELY make yuo money back and then some! Just the steel would get about $30-$40, then you would have the mother boards, Ram ships, CPU's, HDD aluminum, power supplies.....you would make some money for sure. As for the value of your time, that i can not say. If i were given that opportunity, i would jump on it. There are a lot of possibilitied there for resale of parts on ebay as well as gold recovery and basic metals. Best of luck!

  • @oldschoolman1

    Do the older Pcs have gold in them also? Ive got about a semi full of old towers from a closeout auction, but they are pretty old like before DDR whatever the older ram was called. lol THX

  • @moosescrapper5928
    @moosescrapper5928  11 років тому

    Oh I agree completely. And I do sell them when they work. I also sell parts on ebay if I can test them as well. Scrapping is a last resort as scrap value is by definition the lowest value for an item.

But im not sure how much each PC is commonly worth in scrap so I don't know what to buy them off people for so if you can tell me how much the scrap from one of your common pc's totals for it would be greatly appreciated thanks :D also very helpful vid liked and subbed!

    Hello again.I have watched this video many times picking up little tips each time. This the motherboard you pulled being a lower grade would you strip it for the parts? I ask because I will have to ship everything.

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  11 років тому

      I strip them down. I take off the copper and aluminum and brass, separate the cpus, pci cards, and ram, then take off the flatpacks, IC's gold plated pins etc. If you can, learn how to remove these things with a hot sand bath. Its just a cookie sheet with sand on a gas grill. The componants come off a lot faster so you spend less time. If its a green board you will get more money for it, any other color strip yourself for sure. Thanks!!

  • @dorkot
    @dorkot 9 років тому

    also, can you show how to remove the gold from the IC chips?

  • @Dudewithangerissues
    @Dudewithangerissues 11 років тому

    When speaking of selling parts are you referring to selling them to be re-used or be recycled (motherboard, logic board. green boards, chips, misc)? The reason i ask is because when i took apart a few towers i damaged the components so re-use wouldn't be possible.

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  11 років тому

      Reused! There is a big market for a lot of things used. It takes a while of looking things up on ebay and getting an idea of what will sell. And after a while you learn to take things apart more gently if its worth it etc. One example is i just got an old Winbook XP with a crapped out HDD. Everything else was fine. Not a heck of a lot of scrap value, a couple bucks of gold maybe, not including the ceramic processor. I took it apart as carefully as i could and sold the power cord/adapter for $9.99, the CPU for $25, Disck drive for $9, and have a couple other parts listed waiting to be sold. Buyers pay shipping and ebay takes about 10% so i made $40 from one P.O.S. old lap top! And the funny thing is that it really did not take much more time than just ripping it apart.
      Thanks for watching!

    Mr. Scrapper, how do you recover the gold pins from the ram slots and the other gold plated pins? the plastic box thing around them doesn't cut away very good. I ended up picking up 4 cpu's 5 monitors, printers, phones, old boom boxes all for free last night off craigslist.

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  10 років тому +1

      There are lots of ways, you can choose what is best for you. SOme people use the hot sand bath, other, the heat gun or propane torch, others use an air impact chisel, other just pry and cut them off with flat head screw drivers and cutters. Once you have the material off you can choose to soak it in AP for a few days or use hot HCL. there are other methods but could not help you with those.

    HI Moose. I was wondering if you would be able to respond to my question. I have scraped almost 20 mother boards and on all of them when i remove the plastic from the RAM slot, the pins don't seem to be gold plated at all. SO i used a magnifying glass and the result was still the same. They look metallic and no gold plating at all. Oh and by the way the motherboards are older production - best guess 10 years and older. The same goes for the white plastic slots on your video - the ones that hold network and video cards. Is it posible that they are not gold plated. Is there a chance that they are another metal that doesnt need gold plating. I was wondering if im missing something. Tnx in advanced

    • @moosescrapper5928
      @moosescrapper5928  9 років тому

      Mike van Wieringen That's hard to say. It kind of depends on what you are willing to do. If you like ebay then I have made as much as $100 per junked tower. You can get $10 for the power supply, $20 fo the case if its in good shape, and all the other componants if they still work like the motherboards, pci cards, etc. Just scrap value, you are looking at about $10-$15 in most cases if the power cord is included

      Hasten Lawrence THat is something that is a very individual thing. For me, because I have experience with ebay, scrapping and the items and parts I get to sell on ebay as a direct result of scrapping in some months pay better than my 40 hour a week job. I guess, the best way to answer is to say that this is what you put into it, with a touch of luck.

    Hi, it was a nice video, but you can make at least 30-50$ just to sell this computer as is for parts and repair or like a working unit, if it is does, to some one on CL and not deal with scraping at all, which would be much more money and less hassle to resell the scrap materials out of it. This particular one is quite a modern computer and may go even more - like 70$ if you do some little TLC, put the OS and make it work.

    Bet you knew I'd be weighing in on this video eh? Calling an optical drive IDE is generally not a problem but for your viewers they should NEVER call a magnetic drive, be it a hard drive, zip, jazz, super disk, tape drive...etc... an IDE drive. That DVD is an ATA drive, (commonly incorrectly though not inaccurately also called PATA, for Parallel ATA). IDE PREDATES standard ATA, and is infact ATA revision 1 via retcon. IDE and ata are pin/wire incomparable and you run the risk of someone (like me) looking for an IDE tape drive buying an ATA drive and being beyond mad. On ebay the masses may be good for most of your sales but you always risk the more specific, informed buyer causing a problem using the wrong terms.
    Sell that clear plastic safety shell on it's own, it's one of the most commonly broken pieces in those HP units.
    Finally those HP cases will commonly fit WBGX, uBTX, and ETX boards as is. They're also great for mounting laptop computers in a desktop case. I've yet to find a laptop that didn't fit. Useful for recovering value from laptops that work, but have dead screens. Rather than fix the screen, just pull it, and install a simple vga or dvi uDIN to full cable out the back. Bingo, full desktop from busted laptop.

    I would buy that whole pc for 15$ To use it not to scrap it.

    I was more hoping that you'd discovered a cheaper way to extract the gold, rather than using cyanide, or very concentrated hydrochloric acid...or nitric/sulphiric

    ....The weight of the container, the sheathing around the wire, the plastic bits etc, not to mention what ever the copper is alloyed with, your scale most likely hasn't been calibrated recently and I doubt it's leveled. I was disappointed that, you really only showed how to disassemble an old PC, rather than reclaim any material. I blame myself for leaping to the conclusion that, "scrap" and "reclaim", mean the same thing.

    your pc is worth more if you sell it second hand than taking it apart and saying you pc is20%

    please learn how to use a scale! You weighed several objects, and claimed that the sum of their weight was equal to a value. Copper wire I believe.
