This was high on our list earlier this year when we were looking at vehicles but it was just a bit too small for what we wanted (but the vehicle itself was quite good). We did what was talked about in the video, upsized to the Forester Wilderness and it was perfect. Wasn't too much more money and has the power hatch like Zack likes. We traded in our Kia Sorento Turbo for it and couldn't be happier. We find the power good (not overly powerful, but don't find it slow either) and the fuel economy is about 25% better than our Sorento was. One thing you really notice with it (and likely the Crosstrek too) is how good they drive, especially when zipping around town. They seem to have a great turning radius, so navigating busy and crowded parking lots is much easier than most other vehicles. Regarding the Hot Topic question, the Wilderness models aren't just an appearance package. There is true capability added. Lower drive ratio in the differential (4.11 vs 3.7), transmission cooler, additional X-mode programming option for deep snow/mud, increased ground clearance, revised bumpers for improved approach and departure angles, A/T tires, additional cladding, skid plates, strengthened roof/rails for increased load capabilities, Soft-Tex seat material and revised suspension tuning to handle the slightly higher ride height. We'll never go off-roading, but we liked the rugged looks and the extra capability can still be good in the winter (although, a regular Forester would still be strong there too).

Waited few months and got my wife 1st wilderness Crosstrek alpine green 2months ago in Ottawa ❤ we love this! Drove to Quebec other week killed snow road! Good car for money! Would be better with electric tailgate n passenger seat tho 🎉
Randomly watching this video and just wondering - what do people like about "power lift gates" and since these come together - "power seats". I've just switched from an old, base Forester to a new Outback Wilderness which has all the extra features and personally I like the Wilderness for the extra engine power, ground clearance, looks, but I don't much care for all these power luxuries and wonder why people want them. To me they're just additional things that can break, cost more and add weight. A power lift gate might make sense on a large SUV or maybe for a shorter or older person, but to me it just seems like a slower way to open and close the hatch. Power seats make sense for the additional comfort adjustments and maybe if the car can remember user settings to easily adjust seat and mirror settings to multiple drivers, which I believe the Outback Wilderness doesn't do (it also doesn't have the Driver Focus feature which I think enables that), otherwise it just seems like a slower way to adjust a seat. A sunroof? When it's sunny - you want it closed to avoid glare and when it isn't - there isn't much to look up at and if you're driving you probably shouldn't be looking up anyways. For me - I just see the cargo box through the sunroof. I guess it could be useful to peek at? Please change my mind or help me understand! :)
Yup I agree. I just bought the '24 Crosstrek Sport and don't see a need for the powered lift gate. The opening isn't huge back there and I can't think of many situations where I would really need it, aside from hands full of grocery bags (maybe). Mine does come with a lot of electronic features, but to your point, it is stuff that can break more easily. My wife has the 2019 Premium model and does not have a lot of the stuff mine has, but still is extremely practical and functional. But the newer model is definitely a better ride overall. The '24 base model is likely the best no frills option, with perhaps the only catch being the slower 2.0L engine. Not a deal breaker IMO. Power adjusted stuff is overrated.
I tried to buy a Subaru Outback Wilderness last year, and it was a massive pain in the butt to deal with the Subaru Dealers here on the East Coast (Canada). None of the dealers I went to used in-house vehicle trade in appraisals or sold used vehicles. They used a 3rd party to make the offer to buy the vehicle, and they were constantly lowballing. The vehicle I wanted to trade in was worth $24,000 - $26,000 (I received appraisals from non-Subaru dealers), but the Subaru dealers (3rd party) would only offer around $19,000. It was 100% the reason I did not purchase a Subaru, and many others here have had the same experience. Subaru has a serious problem with their dealer network here on the East Coast of Canada.
the Crosstrek Wilderness especially in geyser blue really looks like a giant Hot Wheels toy!!! I can handle the cladding on both outback wilderness trim or forester trim but here, on the Crosstrek the side cladding is just massive. I do like the back bumper with embossed Subaru stamp though.
I have a Ctek & Outback. Outback has power liftgate. I don't mind the manual one on the Ctek at all. With the power liftgate you have to be aware of how long you leave it up becuz it can drain the battery. Known issue in most Subaru models. There are work arounds with carabiners & other gadgets but definitely an engineering flaw.
Same here and I prefer the manual lift gate on the Crosstrek. The power is just one more thing to go wrong and while it’s closing the dog has time to stick his tail out!
Ok, I'm a little jealous of the Canadian Crosstreks, y'all get the front camera and heated steering wheels. We don't get either one of them on the US Crosstreks......lol
All Crosstreks coming into Canada are still built in Japan. Subaru has great quality but my feeling is that the ones built in Japan will still have a better build quality than those that come out if Indiana.
It seems like the CVT cooler should be a standard feature to enhance transmission reliability. I agree with Zach on lift gate, at least make it an option, same for passenger power seat. Great review, too bad Subaru didn't take you to a location to show off its off-road capability... Isn't that why the Wilderness exists? A missed marketing opportunity!!!
So he says he would pay $3,000 more for the Forrester just for the rear lift. Lol, how damn lazy have people become. Nobody has a problem opening there car doors. I've never thought a lift for the back was that big a deal.
the Subaru Crosstrek is for somebody looking for a little fun, the Subaru Forester is for a small family, but need the AWD in the state they live in during the winter months.
Love the increased ground clearance, simple 2.5 l engine for dependability, 3500 pounds of towing , roof rack capacity, 11.6 “ infotainment screen that is integrated into the dashboard unlike many iPad looking units in the competition, ease of reaching roof rack cargo box, wireless charging, no wire connection for apple-play, sportex seats for durability and cleaning, tailgate cup holders, off road/ snow rated tires, descent fuel economy, led lamps. Don’t like the gold bling. It may be worth painting black ?
How about those black headliners on the wilderness line? I just got a forester wilderness that I love, but was I surprised by the black headliner on a ‘gray’ interior - unlike a 2022 FW that I rented on Turo. Seems kinda gloomy but I’m hoping it will grow on me.
The US version of the Crosstrek Wilderness does not have a heated steering wheel, sadly. Perhaps you're reviewing the Canadian version and that one has it, but not the US version. Great video, btw!
If you could get passed Wilderness's controversial styling, it should be the best buy model of each of Forester, Outback and Crosstrek's offering. The standard off-road kit is very appealing, even for those who don't need to venture off-road. I personally would choose 2.5 Onyx instead.
Is the noise we can hear upon your first acceleration louder than say a RAV4 regular gas noise we know it has when it is accelerated quickly? That’s my first question. I’m asking because I have two opinions but they weren’t answered in this review. I drove a Forester (no not the Crosstrek) at -30 C in Winnipeg a few years back and the noise output was atrocious! Now I still love the looks of the Forester but that test drive took me away from the Subaru noise to my second CRV. Secondly I drove a Crosstrek a few years back as well and found its straight line tracking to be twitchy. IE it was hard to keep it centred. As well it really leaned into turns. Now I know, I know it has a low slung engine to keep you at low centre of gravity but the low centre isn’t found until some dipping is done first. So I would have liked to have heard in this review what the straight line and exits felt like regarding any twitchiness & leaning. Now to cut some slack for Subaru, I think I heard a few years back that suspension in the Crosstrek was altered to address this. Any thoughts? Go Ni
The fact is that no one buys MT vehicles anymore, at least not enough to justify the cost and production of such transmissions. The percentage of people buying them just doesn’t make sense to make them. However, the question isn’t whether Subaru will make MT vehicles. The question is, would you actually buy one if it did. Too many times, people moan and groan about the demise of the MT but they would most likely not buy such a vehicle for other reasons.
@@housepianist I own a 2022 vehicle with a manual transmission and the only downside is stop and go traffic. Most Americans are (lazy) to learn to drive a stick. As far as OEMs reducing production on manual vehicles in the lineup is due to CVT transmission is cheaper and better for gas consumption for their buying customers.........
@@crow_2k11beatsbydre8 Everyone is whining for a manual transmission.... but no one was BUYING a CrossTrek with a manual transmission, so Subaru discontinued them. Can't make money on a major option that very few people bought.
Wow That is a beautiful color. Not for sure wilderness would be my choice. Urban/light snow. Did Subaru mention anything about a hybrid Crosstrek? Also, where in California are you, it is beautiful there. Enjoy your trip south of your border!!
The extra height and at tires most definitely affects handling. You just didn’t push it. Five minutes in a test drive and I could tell easily. Fine if you want the half inch of extra clearance and other features, but no question it doesn’t handle as well as the regular models.
I found 182hp to be tolerable but whether they like it or not, carmakers are going to have to be dragged kicking & screaming into providing real power in their cars if they want to compete with buyers who are considering EV. I've got a '16 WRX (CVT - I know, it's a city car & I find manual shifting to be pointless - paddle shifting is more fun for me) and its 268hp is just enough for my needs. Atlantic Canada, lots of snow, but even the low clearance doesn't matter when you've got the Subaru AWD system. Apparently the CVT WRX (CVTRX as I call it) has the same 'type' of Subaru AWD as the Crosstrek. Nothing like freshly-packed snowy streets during or just after a storm, the road to yourself, turning off TCS and SCS & gunning it! I was shopping for something AWD & found the 152hp of the base model Crosstreks, just as I find the Honda HR-V - dangerously underpowered. To be honest, Subaru & Honda should be ashamed of themselves for having so little power. My next vehicle will be AWD, and I'm looking for the most power in as small a CUV as possible. So far, KIA's EV6 or the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EVs are the only ones with enough power. The EV6 is hideous to look at, inside & out, and there's something about the Ioniq 5 I just don't trust. Another year out of this WRX & we'll have to see. I just had my transmission replaced under warranty (otherwise would have been $11,200 CDN) & I must tip my hat to Subaru for standing by their CVT's so long.
So if they install an oil cooler on the CVT what does that tell you about the transmission? And with EV's taking over the cities the roads are being improved, upgraded for heavier vehicles and far less pot holes. So the AWD and high ground clearance doesn't necessarily translate into heavy duty endurance and longevity in the city, just higher gas consumption.
How about the ride quality ? On the road ?? Rough?, Jittery. or smooth ?? No body has said ? Will the Wilderness jar you to death going down the highway ?? Love your Reviews . Keep them coming !!
We have a Crosstrek wilderness. It's very smooth, very quiet. Not a rough ride at all. It is meant for going off the pavement after all. I will say, my previous car was a 2006 Subaru sti, do anything rides like a pillow in comparison lol
I stopped by a Vancouver Subaru dealership earlier this week to look at the cars on the lot, hoping to spot a crosstrek wilderness. They had a whole bunch of red crosstrek, all with a Ontario license plate.???
Surprised for the off roadish vibe they omitted the front camera ??? Still prefer the Forester Wilderness ..the extra room was the bonus for me…and it has a front camera
That’s all Subaru does these days. Subaru has never been known for beautiful design, but lately there’s been zero effort put into designing something that looks decent.
Agreed, I’m due for a vehicle soon and I find the Outback appealing for my needs, but the current one is kind of ugly to me. Hopefully the 2025 is better looking and the corporate cladding division dials it back a lot.
Well it's all about function over form. Being campers who go use PLUZ the cladding is perfect. Better than scratching a nice paint job up due to underbrush
I love the bean look LOL, looks like my ford focus hatchback 🫰💀. Im not a big fan of the exterior with the black fenders around the wheels but looks good! Cmon Subaru! 😍🤭

I'm one of the people who thinks it the Crosstrek Wilderness looks really cool. But I don't expect to do enough hardcore off-roading to justify the extra thousands. It would be pure vanity
I've seen this tested and it out does the jeep and broncos... (in BASIC offroad tests--- it is NOT a rock crawler.. although I've seen them lifted and doing offroad!!)
When did small Jeeps become this expensive at over $40k?! Insane. Bronco Sport at close to $50k is another hwy robbery. Their reliability do not warrant such crazy prices.
Sedona is beautiful and a Crosstrek would fit in well. Hope you enjoyed your time there. As for the Crosstrek, it’s a Subaru. Quirky, but let’s be honest bad, styling. Still you don’t buy a Subaru for that. You buy it because of how it performs in certain conditions, IE snow. There’s a reason I’m always stuck behind Subaru drivers and it’s because they’re concerned with safety. Anyway, don’t dislike the brand, but would never buy one.
I’m an outdoorsy person and these great little cars appeal to me. But that hiking boot cladding is way over the top. Unfortunately, it’s pass for this reason alone.
It looks WAY better in silver. That blue is ugly, IMO. I just bought the silver one in the U.S. and it DOES have a heated steering wheel. What a fun vehicle to drive!
I prefer the Outback but the Crosstrek could work too. However, to answer the question about whether the cladding is just a styling exercise, yes. 100%. It serves no purpose other than to give the impression of ruggedness and off-road worthiness. Personally, I think cladding is ok but it’s just excessive with the wilderness editions, especially the Crosstrek. The cladding on that looks like a bad Rorschach test.
I wish I could get past the excessive cladding. I'm all for sensibly-done fender well cladding, as we see in vehicles from other carmakers, but this over-styled stuff just looks goofy ('reminds me of the first time I saw a "wing" on a Toyota Corolla sedan).
About two years ago i would have bought one, but now i think they have ruined it with all that ugly cladding plus no manual, and all you can get is a CVT!
Wilderness models should have a standard automatic transmission. that would be a great upgrade. forget all the cladding. give us a real upgrade. cvt's and towing don't belong in the same sentence. and while I'm on a rant, take the hvac control out of the screen. no one wants that, no one.
You had me at spare tire. Hard to believe that’s become a selling point .

The copper accents was the main reason we avoided the 2024 Forester Wilderness. We purchased a 2024 Forester Touring then added several options we preferred on our Subaru’s.
Absolutely LOVE you guys ! Makes me smile every time you release a video ! Curious, do you do any meet-ups with your subscribers in Vancouver ?
Hello to you both-
It's a great all-wheel drive .
Thanks for sharing
As an owner I love mine all the way around it
I have a Ctek & Outback.
It's odd yes. Usually we're jealous of the US with what is usually offered 🥲.
Super scenery both with an apt car in the wilderness with the Crosstrek 🎉
Subaru is the state bird in Colorado
All Crosstreks coming into Canada are still built in Japan. Subaru has great quality but my feeling is that the ones built in Japan will still have a better build quality than those that come out if Indiana.
Does that include the Crosstrek Wilderness?
Sounds like the Crosstrek is a better deal than the Honda HRV all around.
Sarah n tuned showed a surprising result for this little gem.
There are several videos on UA-cam that more than demonstrate the abilities of the new CrossTrek.
Yes @@eskieman3948found them, thanks.
So he says he would pay $3,000 more for the Forrester just for the rear lift. Lol, how damn lazy have people become. Nobody has a problem opening there car doors. I've never thought a lift for the back was that big a deal.
Which location is 10:35 shot at? As a rock climber, those boulders on the left side look amazing.
Are you guys (or your team) the hardest working folks in show business? 🧐
the Subaru Crosstrek is for somebody looking for a little fun,
the Subaru Forester is for a small family, but need the AWD in
the state they live in during the winter months.
Great video! I was curious, did the tear-drop camper trailer have its own dedicated brakes or did you rely on the Crosstrek's brakes while towing?
I like the looks of it. Kind of reminds me of the Isuzu Vehicross from the late 90s. Just wish it had the 2.4 turbo and a manual.
What's the word on the street on Subaru's direct injected engine and carbon build-up? An issue or non-issue?
Non.
As far as copper accents, That would look great on the wheels.
Here in Canada, if we order Crosstrek Wilderness, is it built in USA or Japan?
built in USA only for the wilderness
Go Ni
This a great car. I like it just the way it is
They should have just put the 2.4T in a Crosstrek and called it the WRX instead of what we got.
Not a bad idea, make it limited edition, likely limited market. Might be issues with the extra power and higher centre of gravity.
I actually like that crosstrek wilderness, in black, but I can't deal with that engine --- and i'm not wild about cvt
I’m feeling like this is perfect Vancouver Island dog car
I have a Lithium Red one. I love it!
I wish they didn't get rid of the manual transmission in the Crosstrek, the CVT is a huge turn off otherwise I would highly consider this
Bring back the manual transmission, this CVT is so sluggish.......
Thanks for the video! Seems like it lacks HP compared to its competitors you suggested.
Im really torn about whether or not the wilderness is worth it over the sport...
thanks
This is a car which belongs in the ‘90s.
why wilderness models are most fuel consuming among other models?
The extra height and at tires most definitely affects handling. You just didn’t push it. Five minutes in a test drive and I could tell easily. Fine if you want the half inch of extra clearance and other features, but no question it doesn’t handle as well as the regular models.
Love your video ( ty Ron
Thank you!
The the steering wheels are not heated
So if they install an oil cooler on the CVT what does that tell you about the transmission? And with EV's taking over the cities the roads are being improved, upgraded for heavier vehicles and far less pot holes. So the AWD and high ground clearance doesn't necessarily translate into heavy duty endurance and longevity in the city, just higher gas consumption.
Wow - you DO like to BS, don't you?
I think the news of Jeep dropping of the Renegade from its lineup in the US and Canada after the 2023 model year did not reach the Motormouth team.
Thanks for the great review! Curious that cars in Arizona looked to have Ontario plates.
Yeah. I was thinking the exact same thing!
I stopped by a Vancouver Subaru dealership earlier this week to look at the cars on the lot, hoping to spot a crosstrek wilderness. They had a whole bunch of red crosstrek, all with a Ontario license plate.???
Heated Steering wheel. My dealer told me that was not an option. Please tell me how i get a heated steering wheel. I really miss that feature.
Surprised for the off roadish vibe they omitted the front camera ???
Still prefer the Forester Wilderness ..the extra room was the bonus for me…and it has a front camera
The cladding department went crazy on this one, it's just weird.
@@wrcpatrickexactly!! 👍
just awful 😶
I love the bean look LOL, looks like my ford focus hatchback 🫰💀. Im not a big fan of the exterior with the black fenders around the wheels but looks good! Cmon Subaru! 😍🤭
Hey Andrew and Zack Can yall show the keyfob? I know it’s not a big dealll but I like see the keyfob and to see if it has remote start. Anyone else? LOL or can yall mention it like “yeah it comes with remote start too” with any car . 🫶 thank you guys! I just like to know it allll LOL maybe I’m just being too much now 🤣
I'm one of the people who thinks it the Crosstrek Wilderness looks really cool.
Snowbirds! Enjoy AZ with the rest of Canada who is also here now 😂
Yes Forester wilderness IS a better buy. It is like a couple 1000s difference for the '24 model year... no brainer IMHO
❤❤❤ my Subarus
Why can't you film in Canadian national parks?
When did small Jeeps become this expensive at over $40k?! Insane. Bronco Sport at close to $50k is another hwy robbery.
Their reliability do not warrant such crazy prices.
US version doesn't come with heated steering wheel or full sized spare (is a donut). for some stupid reason.
Ew .. cvt. Can they improve the engine noise yet gosh it's so loud
The CVT on this vehicle is subpar. Put an 6 or 8 speed auto in this vehicle........
Cute couple😊
Right, she’s a cutie 🥰
It looks WAY better in silver. That blue is ugly, IMO. I just bought the silver one in the U.S. and it DOES have a heated steering wheel. What a fun vehicle to drive!
2L vs 2.5L engine consumes 2L less fuel per 100 kms (approx 10 vs 12 liters).
Didn't care for the wilderness styling, I liked the onyx style so I bought it instead.
No heated steering wheel in the US on any Crosstrek models.....🤷♂️🤷♂️🤦♂️
I like everything about this car but182 HP only is not enough.
I wish I could get past the excessive cladding. I'm all for sensibly-done fender well cladding, as we see in vehicles from other carmakers, but this over-styled stuff just looks goofy ('reminds me of the first time I saw a "wing" on a Toyota Corolla sedan).
Thought about getting this or a RAV4. I went with a RAV4 because the CVT in the Crosstrek was a deal breaker for me. 😢
You DO know that RAV4s have CVTs across their line up, right?????
If only they have a hybrid of this…
About two years ago i would have bought one, but now i think they have ruined it with all that ugly cladding plus no manual, and all you can get is a CVT!
All the competitors are way too expensive and Chrysler vehicles are too unreliable.
Wilderness models should have a standard automatic transmission. that would be a great upgrade. forget all the cladding. give us a real upgrade. cvt's and towing don't belong in the same sentence. and while I'm on a rant, take the hvac control out of the screen. no one wants that, no one.
