All things seem possible in the upside-down world of Kabir! An ant carries an elephant for her dowry; the baby in the womb speaks but not the child that is born. What does it all mean? We, who are ever seeking for meanings, and perhaps ever failing, are baffled by the ‘ulatbaansi’ form, which takes great delight in confounding our quests for meaning. Perhaps it is we, not Kabir, who are looking at the world upside-down, the wrong way round.

This poem springs to life in a song embodied in the voice of a young and handsome Mahesha Ram ji in the year 2006, when we recorded with him in Pugal, Rajasthan. That Mahesha Ram ji derives the utmost rasa from his music, that he tastes and savours its nectar, is amply evident when he sings. He belongs to Chhatangadh village near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, and represents the folk style of the Meghwal community, who are the traditional carriers of the poetry of many bhakti poets including Kabir, keeping it alive through a powerful oral tradition. The first part is expressing the formation of the ego, where an individual, as he/she in their infancy, recognises him/herself, foremost, then the rival sibling followed by the father's image as foe (Freudian theory), then the caregiving mother.
The next one is the development of the human psyche and it's hurried nature to form ideas and concepts at the earliest. Because, as per the Spiritual elucidation, the ego remains unstable and always in a rush to cling itself to a new and appealing idea, and thereby believing it to be as true.
The curd is set even before the proper milking of the cow is, somehow, representative of it.
Our earliest ideas and influences, thus remain an integral part of our characters, and as such we become distant from the actual truth.
Following it is the maturation of an individual as per the norms of the world where it has collected so many riches and ideals that he himself cannot properly hold onto.
With all such adorations and attachments, it shows how nearly impossible it is to find that 'Oneness' even if one chooses to....the very essence being to lose it all to find that union. Everything gained from the world be discarded and detached from by realising that none could give the sense of completion and that everything failed to bring peace.
The last one speaks about all those who feel inclined to influence others by the information that they've received from worldly affairs.
The unborn being symbolised as those who haven't yet discovered the inner calling of truth from within. Who are too occupied and go on stacking materials and related ideas, hence unable and utterly distant from truth.
Whereas those 'newborn' are the ones who have discovered the real treasure but are silent, one for as part of a choice and other as understanding that only a handful would hear them if they chose to speak.

the 'upside-downess' exposes the ego of the listener, allowing them to give it up and find peace within. As Rumi describes, ''out beyond rightdoing and wrongdoing there is a field....there even the words ''each other'' make no sense...''
in that 'field' (Meditation) we find peace. Meditation is not concentration, it is the lack of mental activity allowing the heart to open fully, without thought or emotion. It happens spontaneously. In that state (field) we find inner harmony, accompanied by peace, bliss, courage, wisdom, compassion, discretion, humility, chastity, joy...all at once and always.
