May be, the truth is when he got old not too many people after the 60's were interested in classical music, jo baithak hothii thii daulath vaalon ke gharon mein 100 saal pehle vo baath nahiin rahii, Hyderabad ke nizaam sarkar ne Khan saab ko bulaa liyaa aur rehne ke liye ek bohath badii havelii dii gayii jiska naam that basheer baagh, jii haan hamaarii parwarish usii mehelle mein huvii thii, I was born during partition, this is how we all came to know about his presence, also he was a heavy drinker and ayyaash, the nizaam sarkaar provided his lavish vices. There will never be another Khan Saheb in the history of Hindustan.
Yes when he got citizenship of india he almost left the music. many producers reached to him, refused all of them. He sung a song by the request of K. Asif producer of Mughal E Azam for which he took huge amount of rupess 25000, at that time the prominent singer of india Lata Mangeshakar charges rupess 500 for a song. I think after that song he never sung a song. He is buried in daira momin in hyderabad...

First he didnt want to sing for a movie.
And to deter the producer away, he demanded an exhorbitant amount, so he wouldn't have to sing.
When he saw that K. Asif meant it, by accepting the fees(25000 INR, in comparison the highest paid was 1000 Inr), he agreed.
When K. Asif asked Naushad to suggest Ghulam Ali Khan sahab to sing some parts of the song picturised on Madhubala's face in the scene in a smooth or mellow voice, he just asked to see the picturised song.
When he saw that song, Bade Ghulam Ali khan said that he will record the song spontaneously as the filmed song runs.
So what you hear is a spontaneously created music and a lot of improvisation.
No wonder he was called the Tansen of Indian music industry.
