This is sad situation but those illegal miners knew what they were doing and the risks this would bring, every action has a consequence these illegal miners take up all the police time and the cost, whereas the police could be out doing the protection for the citizens of this country.😮

Even a healthy person can't climb 2km up. Obviously there used to be an easy way out which was destroyed by this operation. Now they are trapped

People honestly think S.A. citizens are fools, Uber drivers never took food underground, and illegal miners resurfaced to collect it.Selected citizens choose to continue work with illegal foreigners for a quick buck. It is unconstitutional to send the army or police underground as they are not trained in underground rescue. WHO PAY FOR THE FOOD BILL BE4 THIS OPERATION????

Humanity first. Human life comes first before tax money considerations. What will people feed their families with when there is no employment and development. When major companies exploit these lands, all people are quiet. When members try to make a living in dangerous situations, everybody has a say. Can you risk to even sleep next to a corpse when you have other means to survive

It's a natural resource that was mined until it was no longer commercially viable to do so... You can't surely accept illegal immigrants to pick the seam faces in a deep mine looking for the last remnants of gold just because it may generate a living for a few brave souls & dodgy gangs/cartels...?

  • @t_dubois

These miners aren’t "independent artisanal miners"-they’re unemployed locals and illegal foreigners recruited by dangerous syndicates who supply them with tools, food and buy the gold. In return, they’re heavily indebted, and the syndicates send then down with armed guards to protect them from rival gangs.
Mining conditions are extremely dangerous no health and safety. Many die from accidents or violence, but not necessarily from starvation. They’re not trapped underground-they stay because they’ve likely hit PAY-DIRT and want to secure their loot. Arresting them is a low concern it's usually a catch and release thing anyway; losing their gold and facing more debt from the syndicates is the real risk.
For now, SAPS can only wait them out, but the lack of a coordinated approachl and a clear strategy to secure the loot or the area.will likely just lead to more chaos.
