I am Teochew Singaporean and I really appreciate this. I don’t know Teochew as well as I wish I did because our government made learning mandarin a priority so dialect was stopped from being on mainstream media for decades. Most of my peers and the younger generation do not speak any dialect or barely speak it. My husband is Hokkien and cannot understand it at all. I can still understand Hokkien. I know what Heng is saying but I have trouble with finding the vocabulary to speak with his type of fluency. I’m in love with this video. I hope Heng posts more videos on Teochew.

I've heard about Teochew; in San Francisco where I'm from it seems there are alot of Vietnamese who speak Teochew, and in Thailand, where I now reside, I hear there are many speakers. While I believe the consensus that Teochew (and 閩南語 in general) is more conservative, more "old" than Cantonese, I hear alot of similarities and it's interesting to note that Teochew and Cantonese speakers both identify as 唐人- Tang Dynasty people- The Cantonese in San Francisco refer to Chinatown as 唐人阜 “Tang Yan Faou.”

I was in a Vienamese pho restaurant in Chinatown and saw a sign on the wall that said something like "Dac Biet" and I said to the waitress "I bet that means 'special.'" (and she said "yeah")

Han Viet is like they convert a Chinese word to Vietnamese writing that can be pronounced similarly to its Chinese pronunciation. Just like America convert 炒面 to " chow mein".

The speaker's name is 王運興 Hêng Ung Hêng and obviously his parents are very educated to come up with such a lovely name. He has never been to China and his Teochew is so good and this means his family must value their Chinese roots or rather their Teochew roots.

Our children do not have to learn Mandarin until they are 8 years old. If you arrive in Swatow airport, you will hear the announcements in Teochew. In the flights between Swatow and Thailand, there are always air stewards who can speak Teochew. I think the Chinese government is very supportive of us learning Teochew. It is very difficult to learn Teochew if it is not your mother tongue. If you are fluent in Mandarin, it is also very difficult to learn Teochew. Teochew is the most difficult dialect to learn.

If our young people do not speak Teochew, these people will not be able to make such media. Our Teochew opera is very famous amongst Teochew people. Young people have to be trained very young to sing in such opera or otherwise they will not be able to make it to the stage. I listen to a famous young song writer like Puan Puang Lim and he said he started singing as a child - and he meant singing Teochew opera. I live in London and I speak to Teochew people in our homeland and they all speak fluent Teochew. We have been told from a very young age about how old our language is and Teochew is from old Chinese and we are very proud of this fact. I also watch Chinese videos made by people in Yunnan and else where and they all speak their own local language. They are all capable in speaking Putong Hua but they prefer to speak their own languages amongst themselves. However, I follow a dog whose name is 國慶 and he lives in Guangdong and his owner and his wife speaks mainly Mandarin but they are able to speak Cantonese for I have heard them speaking Cantonese to the locals.
17:17 oh8deng5 學堂 for school - In the olden days, boys went to school and the school was called oh8deng5 學堂. I think if a word is translated from Mandarin like 學習 then it is hag8 like hag8sib8 as to learn or study. In normal Teochew family we just say oh8 學 to mean learn.
Minnan is also like this, there's a "colloquial" layer with very old pronunciations of basic terms "for example, oh8 for 學 study" and a "literary" layer resulting from Tang-dynasty invasions which tends to be used in more formal contexts "hak8seng for 學生".

I’m Teochew from Singapore. Our family speaks Teochew at home. I migrated to Brisbane, Australia 60 years ago. I go to a Vietnamese village, in Brisbane, to do shopping once a month. Sometimes I hear people speaking Teochew & it’s music to my ears. There are 8 tones in Teochew dialect. Some of the tones have a nasal sound & it’s difficult for people to master. For example the word Swatow (Shangtou in Mandarin) where the Teochew people come from. This word has a nasal sound. Swatow means mountain head. But if it’s said without the nasal tone, the word becomes sand head. For people who grew up speaking Teochew, the tones come naturally. But for people learning Teochew the tones can be a challenge. I’m very proud to be a Teochew nang.

It was the first time in chinese written history that Southern china in contact with central china culture. Each spoken teochew word can be written in chinese character. People can check that out with a chinese teochew dictionary. So, nowadays, people might think First Emperor King could be a teochew person. I am a teochew senior and also quite interested in teochew culture.

You are not correct. I or me we use the word “wa”. The word “nung” means us or we. The word “wa” can also mean to “to lean”. It has the same tone as “wa” meaning I. In this case it’s the context in which the word is used , gives it a different meaning.
Nope, Taiwan mainly speak Hokkien/ Fujian/ 福建 language, although it shares some words with teochew but they can't mutually intelligible. Btw, there are notable amount of teochew people living in Taiwan, many of them have been "hokkienized"

Southern Min is divided into hokkien, teochew, qiongwen... Taiwanese is a Hokkien topolect. However, in Taiwan they use Minnanhua to refer to Taiwanese.

Even the teochewnese in the subgroup of chaozhang is even difficult for us with root in the subgroup of chaochou to understand. This is honest opinion, my great lauh thio is from this region while his wife is from jieyang.. i have difficulty listening to his conversation.
I personally have no problem in communicating with Taiwaneses when they speak in Minnan or Hokkien dialect or langauage. In Teochew, there are eight counties, each has their own accents, but they are all communicable without problems only sometimes the choice of vocabularies are a bit different but still understandable.

In London, China Town is known as 唐人街 Tang Ren Jie Tang people's street.
Those Vietnamese are actually Vietnamese born Chinese. There are many Chinese in Vietnam especially in the city.

Hokkien and teochew are about 50% communicable just like Portugese and Spainish
Even the teochewnese in the subgroup of chaozhang is even difficult for us with root in the subgroup of chaochou to understand. This is honest opinion, my great lauh thio is from this region while his wife is from jieyang.. i have difficulty listening to his conversation.
聽多了就習慣了! 在東南亞很多華人社區的交流很多時候是各說各話、還要滲雜當地語言。還不是同樣可以溝通。沒理由說的同是潮汕話、只因腔詷不同就聼不懂吧！
I personally have no problem in communicating with Taiwaneses when they speak in Minnan or Hokkien dialect or langauage. In Teochew, there are eight counties, each has their own accents, but they are all communicable without problems only sometimes the choice of vocabularies are a bit different but still understandable.
Nice, keep on doing what you are doing for the common good of the teochewnese, wherever they are worldwide. Though our root originally was from mainland china.

Sorry to say that, probably Heng was not born and raised in teochew, he doesn't know much about the language , culture and differences in accents of teochew.
Teochew opera definitely is not performed in a comedy way. Each of its operas carries a story like the cantonese operas, Beijing operas , etc.
Only my great grandma understand these phek jie khek.

You dont seem to make any sense? He seem to speak teochew quite well. He was brought up by his parent which hand down the language and culture pretty well apparently.
It's quite strange that they use "唐山“ for China! At home (in Vietnam) we just say 中国（dong1 gok8).
I'm not sure which part of Vietnam you are from, but majority of elder ChaoZhou people would definitely say "唐山“ and "唐人” in common dialog.
