On the weakness (sappiness) of the story synopsis, this film should never have been ok'd by the studio. Fortunately somebody at the studio made a big mistake and we ended up with a truly great film. Thank you Douglas Sirk, Rock, Jane and whoever blew it at the studio.
The Magfigent Obsession what a classic Jane Wyman & Rock Hudson a great love story. The first I it was in the 64 at The Riz on Mississippi & Walker we went for Pet Milk labels.
I find it so hard to believe that Douglas Sirk, having made so many wonderful films such as this one, was never nominated for anything...and other directors, perhaps less talented than Sirk, were not only nominated for awards, some of them even won these awards
It was b/c his movies were seen as soapy rather than looking at the message beneath the melodramatic surface. It is only in later years that critics saw the genius.
This movie is a real howler and a hoot! It could only be made in 1954 and no other year. But on the plus side it is beautiful to look at, I think it would play better as a silent movie.
This movie is so unbelievably absurd, it's painful to watch. Wyman's hairstyle and other intangibles make her appear to be more like a mother to Hudson than a romantic interest. The flick retains the same 1930's sensibilities as the original, yet incredibly, movie goers ate it up in '54. I was extremely disappointed and was actually glad when it ended.

Richard Gere and Meg Ryan should have done a modern re-make of this film a few years ago.
