      In recent years he’s walked that back. He always wanted to use better hardware and real instrumentation, but by the time that became possible, he was super burnt out on the industry as a whole. There have been recent interviews he’s done where it’s obvious he looks back on his chip music quite fondly, and has expressed some interest in doing some of it again. I think part of his change of heart has come about from discovering that all those years he thought no one really noticed what he was doing, he’d amassed a following of people who were actually nuts about his music.

    Tim Follin pushed the NES' sound capability to its absolute limits. The original is still a masterpiece. But I think this is what happens when somebody gives the YM2612 the same treatment. This is both a worthy tribute, and a great work all on its own.
    It also makes me want to launch myself into space, screaming the entire way.

    Anybody saying that an FM chip is a "bad" chip doesn't know what they are talking about, seriously some of the most memorable themes for games in Japan have been written on FM hardware, and professional Keyboards used FM synths to this day :) (Granted not the same as in the Megadrive ofcourse, time moves forward after all ;)).
    It just required a lot more knowledge about wave forms and how frequency modulation works. One cannot just ram a sample in :P.

    • @SpectroOfficial
      @SpectroOfficial 8 років тому +11

      +DehnusNorder Funny thing is that FM Synthesis is still used today on modern music

    • @DehnusNorder
      @DehnusNorder 8 років тому +10

      Spectro YUp, most modern Synthesizers use FM as well. It is a perfect way to simulate instruments very realistically even. Granted the chips in those Synths are not only leaps and bounds above what was in the Megadrive (both in costs and in years of progress that was made.).
      But still rather than a sampler an FM approach just sounds better. Provided you have the proper coefficients for your modulation :).

    • @SpectroOfficial
      @SpectroOfficial 8 років тому +6

      +DehnusNorder Indeed. I've tried FM in a software based synth called Serum. I dont fully understand how to use it correctly yet but i can see the use for it. The sounds created were very interesting and i was only using a sine wave. Since Serum isnt limited to the basic sound waves and can use many others, i imagine some super cool stuff can be created! Synthesizers are such a wonder :D
      I wish i knew how to make music using Megadrive hardware. I always loved the YM2612

    If Tim Follin would be able to play some MD in 1990, it would definitively sound like this. I can imagine a port to MD with music totally rearranged by Tim (unlike other ports of games with his music in which he was not involved).
    At first, music in early MD was pretty simple programmed, so this is totally viable, as this sounds like Tim is taking full advantage of the most basic FM and make it sound like genius.
    Real trivia here, as you may know already, Tim Follin himself regrets not being able to do more MD soundtracks, aside for the proto cancelled Time Trax from 1994. Just imagine if he was able to work earlier on MD and actually produce many soundtracks thru 90s.

Also, since the MD port of Spiderman and X-Men Arcade's Revenge had an awful music conversion, I think it's time to do a proper arrange on that soundtrack.

      GravianS i actually made this song without a DAW or VSTs, I typed all the notes by hand into a text editor, in the format for the SMPS sound driver that a whole bunch of Sega produced Genesis games used. The sound was recorded directly from the kega fusion emulator. It was a slow, convoluted process, and nowadays if I feel the need to make a song for the YM2612 I do it with a DAW and Valleybell's mid2smps converter.

      Ah. I actually know someone who wanted me to do music for ROM hacks who uses the mid2smps converter and was trying to get me to try it, I might actually need to give that a shot.
      Using a VST is still probably the easiest way, but there are a few caveats to doing that.

    It's a shit game, but it's amazing music. What do you expect, it's Tim Folin.

    This would have been worlds better if hitoshi sakimoto samples were used. Games like "Devlish","Midnight Resistence" and "Gauntlet IV" are proof of this. The samples here are so damn scratchy. Disappointed.
