That ending kinda ruined it all for me, you’d think this genius of an escape artist that had planned an escape from the world’s deadliest prison and succeeded would’ve at least check for the distinct marking that his own father and him both had, not to mention the gut wrenching view from the father’s side, you’re own son comes all this way for you, just for him to leave without you, and you had no clue…
I think at that point he had endured too much and became too hasty. Plus he probably ate the poisoned food and was slowly becoming insane, so he made a lapse in judgment. Probably not enough that he couldn't execute his plan, but enough that he would overlook the detail of his father's tattoo. It is pretty weird though that he just assumed one guy was his dad instead of the other.
It does kinda ruin it for me too, the whole movie built up to that moment and it ends with an attempt at comedy? I would understand if it was a comedy film, but it’s not.

The actual reason why Suzuki rescued the other inmate instead of his father was because his father was too demented and physically weak to follow instruction let alone escape, and both of them would surely fail and be killed together. So, after some discussing with the other inmate, the only alternate choice was to escape with that inmate who's physically and mentally more capable, thus ensuring great chance of escape for 2 inmates instead of none at all. The ending does kind of make sense he is in a prison that slowly poisons its inmates until it makes them slow. Which makes it reasonable that he would start to forget how his dad would look. I'm assuming he has been in there for at least 6 months since they didn't tell us how long he has been in there unless I missed that part.
This movie was probably based of Yoshie Shiratori's story of breaking out of japanese prisons since put behind bars in 1936. He used many technics such as spitting Miso soup (traditional Japanese soup) on chains and bars to make them rust and break, he also dug tunnels (becuase Japanese prisons back then had wooden floors), climb cell walls and most popularly, dislocating his bones to squeeze thru a tight food slot on a door. He managed to escape a prison that was built for him with many armed guards keeping eyes on him only for 24 hours, he would later in hide mine shaft and later come out to surrender himself and allowed himself to be imprisoned.
This movie was bases on true story about Yoshie Shiratori, the man who escape prison many times include the infamous aomori prison where nobody can escape since construction, yet, Shiratori manage to escape.
Well, how is he supposed to escape with his dad when they could not converse properly due to his dad's mental health? His dad must have gone through a lot to get to this stage and that must have hurt him mentally and physically. After all that damage, for his son to take him along for the escape would not work. Therefore, he opted to escape with an inmate who is healthy enough to be able to follow instructions mentally and physically. I feel that in the end, the attempt to save his dad is still legitimate. I bet his dad is proud that he made the decision he made.
