Different types of defensive signals may be used at different junctures of the same hand. As defenders, we typically give attitude signals on the suits that our side leads, but give count signals on the suits that declarer leads. In particular, accurate count signals are vital when defending a no-trump contract, especially when it comes to knowing how long to wait before taking an ace.

Thanks Curt. I now understand the difference between the two signals.

Thanks Curt. Very clear explanation of when and where to use the different types of signals.

The lead on the hand is interesting. I've seen signaling where, if a king is led and you have the missing honor in the broken sequence, you play it, otherwise you give count. That way you can convey more information, you don't have to give attitude to encourage play. It also sometimes helps to unblock the suit.

Thanks for that Curt and greetings from England. I’ll discuss this with my partner.

Great video Curt, but I'm not clear whether giving the count means you are signalling the number of cards you have left in the suit, or the number you originally started out with. For example, at trick 7 when declarer led ♥A, West started out with ♥642 but by trick 7 had ♥64. I would have thought that West should have played the top of two cards remaining (i.e. ♥6), but instead West played ♥4. However West did play their lowest heart on the first round of hearts, signalling that they had an odd number of hearts. So do you only give count on the first round of a suit led by declarer?
