Stauffenberg was not a hero, he was far more complex than that. He supported facets of Nazi ideology, was anti semtic, but he opposed the Holocaust. He was worried Germany would fall to the Soviet Union and wanted to keep Eastern Europe under German rule - those were the terms he was seeking from the Western Allies. Hero is the wrong word, used by people who don't understand this complex man or the German resistance movement.

Over 77,000 German people we’re assassinated by the Nazi’s during WW2 for being part of the German Resistance movement, they would also radio London with information on what Berlin was up to because high ranking personnel we’re also part of the German Resistance movement. We should also remember Sophie and Hans Scholl and the rest of the White Rose Movement. All the attempts on Hitlers life and not one succeeded it just doesn’t make sense, we the Allies should of sent a unit of Commandos in to kill him ( My Late Grandfather was a Commando ). The 77,000 German Resistance movement were extremely brave and should be remembered for ever more and anyone who mocks them should be jailed !!!!!!!!!

What is not remembered about Claus von Stauffenberg is the fact that he has earlier enthusiastically welcomed Hitler's appointment as Chancellor in 1933 and approved most of his policies. When the war broke out, he served as an officer in the German army's invasion of Poland, France and other campaigns.
Regarding Poland, he described Poles as 'an unbelievable rabble' of 'Jews and mongrels' who were 'only comfortable under the knout'. He advocated for the systematic colonization of occupied Poland by Germans. To him, Poles were a bunch of sub-humans that should be only treated as slaves. There are proofs that he hasn't liked mass executions during invasion and occupation, yet he wasn't against general oppression.
The only reason why Stauffenberg and most of his fellow conspirators turned on Hitler, whom they have ardently supported until 1943, was because they felt that the war was going badly. Stalingrad and other failures in both fronts convinced them that if they won't do something drastic, like assassinating Hitler and replacing him with a different leader, newly acquired territories in the East and everything they have stolen could be lost.
The fact that modern Germany considers Stauffenberg a national "hero" is appalling and disturbing to say the least. German apologists go to great lengths to point out how he hasn't shown as much hatred towards Jews as many other Germans and Austrians at that time (he still despised them and seen as worse than ethnically or culturally Germanic people, just wasn't so strong about it and rather wasn't for their complete physical elimination); forgetting that what he lacked in anti-Semitism comparing to others, he was making up with equal or even bigger level of anti-Slavism (he wasn't for eradicating all of them neither, but seen in Slavs nothing more than potential slaves).
The conspirators' plan was to end the fight on two fronts and make peace with "the West", even at the cost of giving up many territories obtained during the war (III German Reich's western border would return to that of 1939); but it was to focus only on the eastern front, and they haven't wanted to withdraw from the occupied countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Beside recognizing the stupidity of fighting on two fronts at the same time, they also rightfully blamed Hitler and his close circle for many strategic mistakes.
PS Claus von Stauffenberg was approached by some German officers who were more truly against Nazism, war and Hitler first time already in 1939 and again in 1940, but then Germany was winning, so he had no interest in joining them (although at least as a plus he hasn't denounced them).

The German army's goal was to conquer the world begining with Europe (Nazi atrocities aside), your grandfather took part in that effort. I would love to hear your explanation that would shed a positive light on the merits of being an officer in such an army, with such a goal.
While my family lost dozens of members in the holocaust, I am amused when Germans today say it was not the regular Wehrmacht involved in the atrocities. This is untrue, as there is much evidence of the contrary found in German film from the time. But let's say for the moment these deniers are right -- I repeat my request:
I would love to hear your explanation that would shed a positive light on the merits of being an officer in such an army that sets out to conquer the world.

@@EscanV You made a substitution thesis. Keep in mind that any army is criminal if it commits unilateral aggression against an independent state. Therefore, every active soldier, and especially an officer of such an army, bears part of the responsibility for the crime against peace. The only refusal to use such a policy of conquering foreign countries would be a real heroic and human act of integrity.

To those saying he was a hero etc, let’s not get carried away. Where was this indignation when they invaded Poland in 1939 in alliance with Russia and enslaved and murdered their people? Set up prison camps that killed millions wiped half of the populations of Serbia and the Balkans off the map. Where was this when three million soldiers raped their way through their former ally Russia and starved the Dutch? This all happened well before 1944 when things suddenly didn’t add up. Only when Hitler became clearly delusional in war strategy did the ‘line get drawn’. Where would Staffenberg be if the nazis had won? Probably living, drinking and eating dinner in a murdered family’s mansion in France. Context. He’s no hero, at best he only saw the light and acted on it.
