Couldn't agree with you more! 2 years on, and my Pixel 4a is running like a CHAMP! It's held up really well, and though it may be cheap in price, it is certainly not cheap in parts and components - which is why it is performing so well till today.
It's a great little device, performance still plenty adequate. Probably my least favorite thing with the device are the haptics. They're OK for the price, but I don't love that there's not nearly the level of control that you get with other devices.
One thing that makes the 4a a great phone is its one of the smallest and lightest phones on the market. Price, smaller size, excellent camera, and updated android makes this a top no frills phone. Great review!
I'm using a 4a as a daily driver for the past 1+ year, and it has this certain charm that makes it hard for me to give up on it. Extremely light, very easy to use and the rear camera given its additional processing time - has ridiculous image quality (even some of my friends with newer, flagship phones collective jaws drop especially with astrophotography). It hits just the right amount of boxes. The biggest gripe for me though would be the front camera quality. Even if I don't use the front camera that much, if at all.. whenever I DO use it, the quality is just really disappointing.
Absolutely,, I use both an iPhone 13 pro and a pixel 4a, and it's crazy that the main camera on the pixel 4a keeps up with the iPhone 13 pro,, like I was expecting the gap to beeeee wideee considering the price difference
I very much appreciate older phone reviews like this….your content looks clean and well put together. Look forward to seeing more….keep up this and I will definitely keep subscribed
I just bought the pixel 7 thinking I was ready for an upgrade since my 4a's screen is cracked. The 7 and 7 pro are actual bricks. Huge and heavy. Never realized how comfortable the 4a is to hold and use until the Pixel 7. I'm thinking of returning the 7 and getting a refurbished 4a since I can get one for the same price as a screen replacement.
Undersold the software! The Pixel 4a runs stock Android with no bloatware. The camera also offers unlimited Google photos storage at George saver quality. Fantastic purchase, and still my daily driver!
I got mine in October 2020. It’s currently November 2022 and IMO it is still very much worth holding onto for another year. The 6A is on sale right now for $299 which is an insane deal since that is $50 less than what I paid for the 4A a couple years ago. Very tempting but I think I will resist the urge since I am still content with the performance of the 4A and very much prefer the smaller size. I know I am far from alone in preferring a smaller phone and hopefully Google listens and shrinks the 7A back down to the size of the 4A. It’s the perfect size.
Watching this on my Pixel 4a. Picked it up last spring after losing my S20 (that I'm still making payments on) in the lake. Needed a cheap replacement and I'm so glad I chose the 4a. May pick up the 6a when it's out. Great video!

I love my 4a. I bought it at launch so it's coming up on 2 years. My previous favorite phone was my LG G6. The 4a is basically that LG but in plastic, only one rear camera, but with Google Android so quick and consistent updates. I still routinely end the day with 50 to 20% battery left. I used wired earbuds most of the time I have owned it but recently switched to wireless (Soundpeats). I'll probably get a new phone soon but I am keeping my 4a as a backup.
Best phone I've ever owned. Perfect size for me. Still works great. Wasn't sure about the fingerprint reader at first but now I love it much prefer it to the screen print readers. Wonder if they'll ever make a similar sized phone in future
Mark i used to watch your videos on pixel 4a . Thanks for your videos that time . I consider those useful informations while purchasing pixel 4a. And now I'm watching this video on my own pixel 4a. I bought a 4a5g about a year ago and it's working great. I love the touch sensor on the back and how great photos turn out. It handles daily activities well and plays most games that I throw at it other than Genshin. The reasons I opted for the 4a5g over the 4a despite the $150 price difference was that it was bigger, had a larger battery, better processor, and 5g support. But now the 5a5g exists and it saddens me a little. The 5a5g has the same/better specs than the 4a5g and at a $50 lower price point but it does lose the headphone jack. While I certainly don't need to replace my current phone anytime soon, I have no idea what I would change. Not having a headphone jack is a deal breaker for me, so I feel like I'll end up just getting another 4a5g when my current one starts reaching the end of its life. I think an interesting topic you can cover could be the best choices for smartphones with headphone jacks in 2022
@@preston8872 it would be difficult to upgrade from your current phone for only about $200 unless you mean with $200 as trade-in value Additionally, I'm not really familiar with apple products so it's hard for me to make a comparison. The pixel 4a is a solid option for $350 and pixel 5a5g is excellent for $450 if you are looking for good mid-range android phones. But if you prefer IOS, then you should probably look into the options apple provides.
Been using my 6a since Google announced the $300 trade-in for my 4a... and I regret the swap. The gains (faster chip, 5G, increased battery capacity) are minor and actually not even noticeable. However, the losses are all major annoyances for me: #1 The new fingerprint sensor is absolute trash. Slow, inaccurate, unreliable, inconveniently placed, and yes - really, really slow compared to the 4a. The 4a allowed you to just tap the dedicated rear FP sensor, and unlock the phone instantly. The new FP unlock requires you to activate the front screen sensor with a shake or button push, then press on the correct location (can be a pain with one-handed operation) and hold for a second, and then hope it recognizes your finger, which it usually doesn't. And even when it eventually does, it then goes to your PIN pad instead of directly unlocking the phone. So then you have to enter your PIN, which is exactly what you are supposed to be avoiding with the fingerprint unlock. Furthermore, it's fully invasively integrated with your various app and website biometric unlocks, so if you disable the sensor for screen lock you can't use it to access apps or websites which use biometric unlocks. Seriously, pure crap! And you get these annoyances dozens of times per day while using your phone, every time wishing you had your 4a sensor instead. #2 No headphone jack. This might mean nothing to people who like their wireless earbuds, but I far prefer my trusty wired earbuds. Which I can't use anymore. Not only that, I can't even use my USB-C wired earbuds while charging. Again, a major inconvenience for me and similar users. #3 It's just a bit too bulky. The 4a was the perfect size for one-handed operation - the 6a is just a hair too big. Yes, the camera is better. But the 4a camera was actually very good (until the recent "update" that caused edge blurring). I doubt I'll notice any difference with most photos taken in good light. Yes, the chip is faster. But the performance gain is imperceptible in most applications. Maybe if you do a lot of video editing you'll notice a difference. I didn't. Yes, there's a bigger battery. But my old 4a ran all day anyway, so I won't even notice additional capacity in a typical day. Yes, the 6a uses 5UC (or 5G LTE, or whatever) where the 4a only used 4G LTE. But I haven't noticed any difference in my everyday use. Videos streamed fine on my old 4a, just as well as on my 6a. The small gains are outweighed by the big annoyances. Although it's tempting to get a 6a for just $150 after trade-in, I was happier with my 4a and recommend NOT trading yours in.
Still have my 4a, and it genuinely is a great phone for the price - absolutely no complaints at all. I'll probably upgrade to a 6a this year, but will likely hang onto the 4a - it's that good.

I loved this phone, I got it in sept 2021 and after a year it still performed great. The battery started to deteriorate a bit but it was still very decent with 24h+ durability. Unfortunately I dropped it in water this week and since the phone is not waterproof at all it was immediatly broken.
Absolutely worth it, I'm currently using an iPhone 13 pro and a pixel 4a , I'll say the main camera performance on both phone are pretty close than I was expecting considering the price,,, and the pixel 4a night mode is ridiculous
Pixel 4a is a dang good phone for a light user and nothing in 2022 can beat it It has been my daily driver since 2020 October The price can be more decent though (dang Google doesn't sell Pixel in Hong Kong)
Ever since the release, this phone has done everything well for me. Nothing spectacularly great or bad about it, gets the job done. Other than a couple software bugs I'd say for around $250 right now, its a steal since most popular and up to date phones from Samsung and Apple go for so much more; after trying pixel phones I don't think I can go back!
About the 4a's water resistance. I accidentally dropped my 4a in a bucket of water being used for grouting my bathroom. It was in there a full 35 minutes before I noticed it was missing. I only found it by using "find my device." When I did pull it out it of the bucket the phone informed me that the charging port was wet and that I should not plug it in. I threw it in a bag of rice for a couple of days and am still using the phone 18 months later. While the phone was in the bag I kept texting using the google messages chrome app. This phone is tough; I've never felt the need for a case. Modern phones are just way too big.
After 6 years of using My Blackberry Z10 (Phone I loved the most), lost support from BB this Feb ,NOW Pixel 4a is what filled that place, Loving it daily
Hello .. i wanna buy my first pixel phone.. i am confused to choose between 4a OR 4a 5G. I do like compact size but I dont want to carry power bank everyday.. Do you think 4a (let say in adroid 13) the battery still can last in a day with single charge (texting on whatsapp, read some news, make a call, sometimes use gmaps), or do you think its better to get 4a 5G? Does the size still comfortable to hold?
Thanks for making this video. I just got my pixel 4a like 2 weeks ago. (used one ofcourse) replaced my old pixel 3. its a great device for the price, but like you said its not perfect by any means it does have rainbowing effect on the screen at certain angles and small degrading battery are the things to consider. for me when i was comparing it to my old pixel 3 i found few minors grips 1) Auto brightness is very inconsistent , suddenly in a bright room the brightness will shoot low or high. 2) The device while causally using does get a little warm time to time, like it hovers around 35-38 degrees. 3. vibration motor (haptic feedback) is little buzzy and mushy, Haptics on pixel 3 were amazing so on pixel 4a i have turned them off completely. My major concerns will be long term usage with midrange processor and ageing battery, i would from now onwards consider of getting 1 or 2 year flagship phone which will age much better and last longer. if this phone had, say a snapdragon 765G it would have been much better choice.
Yes it's worth it. It's gonna get updates till August 2023. And there is basically not much difference between the camera performance of pixel 7 and 4a. Battery wise it takes a hit but it can charge faster so it can be covered up. It is really handy as well.
it was a deal breaker for me not having water resistance. I damaged this phone despite not sinking in water, it was outside my shower and the humidity in the bathroom fxck the phone, first was unresponsive, then the screen went to trash. I moved to a Samsung A52 and it is way better hardware but didn't like the size. I just bought a refurbished pixel 3 and it's fine, battery is not that good but size and responsiveness is excellent
I’m still rocking my Pixel 4a 5g without a problem. The only thing I dislike. Is the 128 storage option. They need to start increasing the storage amount on the A series. I’ve never experienced the rainbow effect on my Pixel phone and it charges fast. You kidding me. The pictures are top notch. No problems processing photos. At least. Not on mine.
Love my 4a! Got it for $350. My only complaint was the brightness. Hard to see the screen on a sunny day. News alert. Samsung is giving me $300 trade in toward the Tab S8! Gonna miss you 4a. It was real...
If people want to compact phone and only have a couple hundred bucks, it's an easy recommendation. The pixel 3 actually offers some benefits like a glass build, wireless charging and squeeze for assisting, but it won't get Android 13 or 14. And it doesn't have some of the newer pixel feature drops like the time-lapse astromode. But basically, if you want to contact phone your options are s10e, pixel 3 (but neither will get Android 13, which wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me but it might be for some). Or, if you have more money to spend you could get a z flip or the Asus Zenfone 8 or 9. But if you only got 200 bucks and you want the compact phone that's still supported for another year and a half, pixel 4A is really the only game in town.
I'd love to have this phone, but google guarantees software updates only until August 2023 (November 2023 for 5G version), which makes it questionable, because lack of security updates is a pretty serious issue. If one would want to stay on the supported OS, he\she'd need to install custom firmware like Cyanogen mod / Lineage OS.
@Jamerson Hillier 🇦🇺 I'm not an expert in custom android ROMs, to be honest, but try to check privacy-based ROMs such as CalyxOS , microG, GrapheneOS, CopperheadOS, AOKP
Hey man I love your time rewind reviews. Could you please do more on Sony phones considering the fact that the old sony flagships are very cheap in the refurbished market.
For me it's the fact that you still get to back up your photos without it affecting your 15GB limit and I guess phones from 5A onwards don't have that option
I got an iPhone in 2019 because of the longevity but with Google promising 5-6 years of updates on their phones I’ve been looking at the Pixel 4a and 5
Why would you trade it in if you've still got another year of steam? I'm taking mine until the end of the road then probably buy the latest iPhone SE since android stopped caring about mid-range small phones.
I just bought the regular Pixel 4 for $200 on Amazon renewed. Better chipset, better performance, better performance. I'm currently using it as my daily driver, and my Pixel 6 as my beta 13 experience. It's a pleasure to use.
It's interesting that the 4 has better specs but still goes for less than the 4a. I think that speaks to how attractive the form factor of the 4a is. Google sold out of them faster than any other Pixel from my understanding. The 6a looks like a solid option, just wish it was the 4a's size.
@@lastsonofkrypton36 yeah, the 4's size feels like such a throwback, but it's just so fun to use. I believe if the form factor is the selling point, the 4 and 4a are similar in size, except the 4 just feels more "premium" with the frosted back.

Pixel OS not stock Android!

@@klaasklaas5849 Hi, the battery is not too bad but it isn't good either. I get around 6-7 hours with screen on. The phone doesn't heat up.
The Pixel line are great value phones. I'm still using my Pixel 3XL, bought new in 2018. Not a scratch and working great!.

I'm using it . I bought it last year . The camera is awesome . It's camera struggles a bit in greenery but with inbuilt editing . Battery life is ok ok . Overall It's just awesome . Value for money phone .
I think an interesting topic you can cover could be the best choices for smartphones with headphone jacks in 2022
So I want to pay $200 ish some dollars for a new phone. and I want to upgrade my iphone se 2020. any suggestions
@@preston8872 it would be difficult to upgrade from your current phone for only about $200 unless you mean with $200 as trade-in value
Additionally, I'm not really familiar with apple products so it's hard for me to make a comparison.
The pixel 4a is a solid option for $350 and pixel 5a5g is excellent for $450 if you are looking for good mid-range android phones.
But if you prefer IOS, then you should probably look into the options apple provides.
The 5a DO have a headphone jack tho.
@@dexterter I didn't realize before, but yes it does have a headphone jack, another great reason to get this phone imo
@@dexterter I amend my previous statement, the only upside the 4a5g has over the 5a5g is unlimited cloud photo storage
Been using my 6a since Google announced the $300 trade-in for my 4a... and I regret the swap. The gains (faster chip, 5G, increased battery capacity) are minor and actually not even noticeable. However, the losses are all major annoyances for me:
#1 The new fingerprint sensor is absolute trash.
Man, I just love the way you create and present your content

Ever since the release, this phone has done everything well for me. Nothing spectacularly great or bad about it, gets the job done. Other than a couple software bugs I'd say for around $250 right now, its a steal since most popular and up to date phones from Samsung and Apple go for so much more; after trying pixel phones I don't think I can go back!

Me watching this video on a pixel 4a
Just finished watching the video, loved it, and think I agree with the A rating 👍
I have the barely Bleu model and I love it. Still works great. Love the size of the phone

I love my pixel 4a but I do have to say I just got a used galaxy s 10 and man this is beautiful and only down side is the battery because it's used
Hello .. i wanna buy my first pixel phone.. i am confused to choose between 4a OR 4a 5G.
Man, i love this phone. Never been so satisfied. It's a worth the money.
Thanks for making this video. I just got my pixel 4a like 2 weeks ago. (used one ofcourse) replaced my old pixel 3.
its a great device for the price, but like you said its not perfect by any means it does have rainbowing effect on the screen at certain angles and small degrading battery are the things to consider.
for me when i was comparing it to my old pixel 3 i found few minors grips
1) Auto brightness is very inconsistent , suddenly in a bright room the brightness will shoot low or high.

I got my pixel 3a on launch day , I'm still using it in 2022
For me it's the fact that you still get to back up your photos without it affecting your 15GB limit and I guess phones from 5A onwards don't have that option
Keep up all the great content :)
I got an iPhone in 2019 because of the longevity but with Google promising 5-6 years of updates on their phones I’ve been looking at the Pixel 4a and 5
That's really only for the Pixel 6/6 pro, but even then you're only getting 3 years of OS updates, the last 2 years are just security updates.
Android 12/13 material you design seen like more suitable with 4a 4G/5G/5 round curve body design. It is perfectly sweet, unlike Pixel 6 and above.
As an iPhone user, I really liked this phone. However, I’ve traded mine in since it’ll stop receiving updates after next year. I’m gonna miss it.
Why would you trade it in if you've still got another year of steam? I'm taking mine until the end of the road then probably buy the latest iPhone SE since android stopped caring about mid-range small phones.
I have the 4a for 1 year now and I love it
Hey, thanks for the video.

I believe if the form factor is the selling point, the 4 and 4a are similar in size, except the 4 just feels more "premium" with the frosted back.

pixel 4a on the otherhand released with android 10 out of the box, so we dont know if google will give it android 14 or not. Google hasnt confirmed anything.
With pixels you get night sight, headphone jack, physical fingerprint sensor, dual sim(esim+ physical sim), plastic body, midrange processor.
on iphones you have faceid, much better processor and longer software support ,brighter screen , better haptics, premium device.
it depends on what do you prioritize.
the camera on the pixel 4a, absolutely destroys the iPhone x,, I'm currently using an iPhone 13 pro and a pixel 4a, and both phone main camera pictures are almost identical, except for colour temperature,, and the night mode on the pixel 4a is better 7 out of 10 times, I'll only choose the iPhone x if you want a longer software update, and wireless charging, and better build quality,, but if you care about the camera,,, the pixel 4a is far ahead
