@2:45 Please be aware that some bicycles have a washer insterted into the area where the crank arm removal tool goes. That washer must be removed before the tool is used. Just wanted to clarify this before someone rips out their crank threads.
Thank you very much for the upload. The video was on point. Not extremely long but quite explanatory. But... I think you forgot 2 basic tools for the weekend restorer. 1st a hammer 2nd one or two pieces of wood to use when you put the head cups back on. You can use a tool made specifically for that job but... money...
@@myvicariouslife4012 true, it's a simple to make tool but the pleasure of hammering is by far greater than using a specific tool, even if you made it yourself.

Oh the advantages my generation had ! Two crescent wrenches, a straight blade screwdriver, a chain breaker , and a spoke wrench, and you were good to go . Schwinn , Raleigh , Huffy , or a Sears "english racer" , all your tools fit in a small bag slung on the frame or attached to the seat . Progress and technology BAH !😄😄😄
You can disassemble a modern bike with a set of allen keys, a chain breaker, a cassette tool and a bottom bracket tool. This is if you want to do modern and old bikes. In fact the hardest tool for me to find so far has been the HC4 fixed up removal tool from vintage bikes.
Yes, I think a bike stand is one of the most important tools. It makes it a million times easier which means less likely to damage something on the bike.
the exact/ "niche" video i was looking for ,specific for restoration, I'm sure they can be used for new builds as well. overall the information was very helpful.
How about a pedal wrench? Modern pedals use an Allen key (6mm?) but older bikes require a wrench and often it needs to be a bit slimmer than your standard motor mechanic's wrench. Edit: Also, not a speciality tool but you;ll need a hammer to go with the headset removal tool.
Liking the video, I already own a lot of park tools that will last my lifetime. That being said the best tool kit I own is a made in taiwan unit that I bought for $10 of fb marketplace. Chain whip, cassette tool, headset wrenches, cone wrenches. It does not hurt to look around for used stuff. If one wants to save a few bucks there's a bunch of how to make your own tools vids on the utube. Recently made a headset cup remover for like a $1 or so.
@RollinRat I just wish they made a kit that gave you the actual bike specialty tools ..I don't need adjustable wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, Allen keys.. I got a basement full of tools. I just don't want to hunt down bike specific tools individually.
@RollinRat I've got about 50 Phillips and another 50 flathead screwdrivers, about 10 adjustable wrenches, and probably 75 allen wrenches. I don't need to collect or pay for any more of those. That leaves me with the tedious task of tracking down and purchasing each tool individually.
Just picked up older Canondale f400. It’s helpful to see what it would take to carefully disassemble, sand, paint, lube and put it all back together. Thank you!
thanks.mr. old shovel.i really love all of your videos.i really like what youre doing. restoring old bikes, giving new life to them.. hats off to you. mr. old shovel.. greeting from the philippines.mabuhay
Old rag for wiping stuff.. really essential :) what also makes life easier would be a vice.. I know not everyone has a place for that, but sometimes you need that extra leverage to remove a seized casette or bottom bracket
Awsome video maybe cover some does and do nots on building or fixing bikes like using vise grips and wheel axels or not greasing parts that are aluminum on steal or over tightened bolts?
Great video! This is a really good primer for people, like me, who are just starting cycling and may not even know the specialty tools that are needed. Thanks for making stuff like this!
Another pleasant vid. Thanks for keeping things chill. Hammer, spoke wrench (though I saw one on the multi tool), and a stand of some kind. I’ve worked on upside down bikes for most of my years, but the stand is crucial for a frame strip. Looking forward to more. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Just acquired an old Schwinn and this video answered all my questions about what tools I still need to refurbish it. Thank you! Love your videos!

@@oldshovel thank you.
P.s your channel is the reason i'm about to start restoring an old bike for my son and my wife's bike.
U can make a headset install tool dirt cheap go to hardware store and get a long bolt and some washers. There's a few how to's on the tube.

How could someone hit "unlike" on something like this? Seriously?
Angry people out there. Maybe parktool haters.
Maybe because people don't want to be hoodwinked into watching a six minute Parktool® advert.
@@bustabloodvessel5327 Hoodwinked? The title and snapshot pretty much tell you what's coming. Plenty of vids out there if it's that enraging!

I became a fan recently and love the bike restoration videos! Keep up the great work!
A proper bike repair stand is kind of essential to stripping down a bike, at least it makes it much easier.

I got a basic toolkit from lidl that has alot of tools and only 20$
Good starter kit 👍 I find cone spanners are also jolly useful for so many repairs as most people neglect their hubs (which you did mention). Cheers

Brilliant 👍
Terrific list, but you forgot a pin wrench. Kind of necessary for freewheels and some bottom brackets.
Been holding out on bottom bracket tools. It's pretty annoying that you might need 4 different tools for 4 different bikes.
Fantastic video thank you for sharing 🚲👍
Record more clips like the previous bike restoration ...❣️💓💗
Nice 👍thanks ! Now how bout the different Grease to lube parts
Park tool also has the big blue book so you can learn how to do everything properly
Would you build me a dirt jump bike please no matter how cheap the frame as long as it is a dirtjumper
Great video...Thanks for all your hard work...
Awesome job covering the basic tools. The only element forgotten is tools needed to then reinstall the headset. Love your videos!
In my country, all that tool is very expressive 😭
sir what size of headset did you use on your gt all terra ricochet frame
Just another park tool ad! Got to be kidding me!
Derailleur hanger is a must have tool..

So to restore $80 bike..$800 in tools plus parts. Got it. 😥🤬

@RollinRat I literally made cone wrenches by grinding down extra wrenches I don't use. Now I use them !
@RollinRat I'm fully aware
My basement full of tools IS automotive tools

The birzman Studio Tool Box ist the perfect answer to this , for 300€ and If you inwest another 50 € you'r Set Up pretty nicely
I always like looking at quality tools. 🛠⚙️🔧⚙️🔨 Thanks & be safe. 👍☮️🌞🦠😷🚲
New subscriber, I love your content! Do you feel that the pre-assembled tool kits from Park are worthwhile?
En español por favor...
What tripod do you use to get your camera footage? I can never get good angles when I am recording 😒
Can u make priority list tool, I means. which tool "must have" and which one "can be replace" with basic home tool. thx anyway, this is just awesome.

I’d say the greatest tool is the stand if that counts - super important in any bike repair

I have a multi tool made by a different company. It is really good for biking. Next I might get the park tool one.👍
Keep up the great videos man. Big fan and addicted to watching the bike builds over and over! i think the kona is my favourite 👌

Really helpful. Many thanks for posting.
What if you did a restoration/upgrade to ebike. That would definitely be interesting.
13, 15, 17, 18, 19mm cone wrenches are as essential as a FW / cassette remover tool.
Very awesome video and I like the tools that I need to get one eventually so I can do my own repairs and quit going to the bike shop
As a fellow old timer shouldn’t we have a “cool tool” multi tool? Or the one Tom Ritchie sold?
Popcorn ready
Thank you for making this video, I have been looking for one like this for a while now.
Yes! Just the video I needed as I’ve been binging your videos for the last several weeks.
Yes il a tout le Monsieur 👌😉

Maybe a rubber mallet?
For restorations I find handly to have a set of thread tool to go over and repair some old threads on the frame and parts.
Perfect. I was looking forward to this video.
Muito top 👌
More tools to get to work on bikes now? I’m gonna need a bigger toolbox.
i love your work
..Great info. good to see the basic tools needed..keep safe..
