One thing I like about Mr. Van Melsen is that he is no action hero, he doesn't engage in pugilism or shoot down dozens of cultists. I am not even sure how much of an occultist he is.
He is just a paranormal investigator, well read and with a good instinct for the unusual.

This was such an Alice in Wonderland level of weird and wonder. It successfully captured the absurdity and abrupt dreams could be as well. The story is compelling, the writing is of absolute top quality, reminding me a bit of some of the best Neil Gaiman's novels, highly imaginative, with vivid descrptions that grip you for the richness of the language. Huge thumb up so far.

For me, the best one of Peter Van Melsen yet. It's so cool that the story also carries a flavour of some of the best classics. And diction has been executed superbly (the one knows his own creation best).
Dreams can really be hellish and fearfull, don' I know it... As Jordan Peterson have sed: "...yeah, only because you haven't been in hell, it doesn't mean that it doesen't exsist, buddy!"
With all the specal effects that we have today, it would be ashame not to film all the stories (old and new ones) especialy this one.
    A masterpiece.
    Once again, greetings from Croatia

Thank you Ian, absolute pleasure to listen to as always. I really like the feeling that there is a sort of science behind all the occultism. At least the characters imply that and seem to believe it. Especially the discussion between Cane and Van Melsen about active elements really sold the idea that you are listening to two experts speaking in occult jargon without it feeling like a lore dump. 3 and a half hours requires more attention than tonight can afford at the moment, being it’s Valentine’s Day and all..
I’ll reconvene at midnight and bring to bear my mind on the subject.

I am detecting vague scents of The Dark Tower in this one... I can't say I'm familiar with much older literature, but I grew up glued to King's books, & this entry in the Van Melson series reminds me vaguely of the dark tower & a bit of the stand. Namely the pursual... The man in the hat... The man in black? Randall Flagg vibes?
Regardless of inspiration or nods this is fantastic. Will be seeking out the rest of this series.

There are indeed some similarities, despite the fact that I didn't read The Dark Tower series till after penning the first draft of this many years ago. I think the idea of a mystical tower or mast for me personally was inspired by the TV mast at Winter Hill that I could see from my bedroom window growing up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Hill_transmitting_station
That, coupled with a wide variety of obscure stories, video games, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis.
(at least, these are the things that spring to mind when thinking about it)

Oh, same here. I could lay down, close my eyes and listen to Van Melsen stories for years, letting Ian's and Jennifer's voices create the most amazing imagery in my mind.
Every Van Melsen story so far have activated my imagination to create all these wonderful and dreadful places and events in such an engrossing manner to the point where it seems that the world created in my mind seems real.

Its 0548 here for reference... Closed my eyes...imagined the gas mask...and I could almost catch the scent of incense... Probably because I was at one time acquainted with a New Orleans incense maker who used the Japanese process with a sandalwood base...one "pinky finger" diameter stick about a foot long burned for hours. Her Dragons Blood formulation was my favorite... Other than those I enjoy frankincense and myrrh....Ahhhh...the theatre of the mind and memory...thanks old friends...great yarn!

@@HorrorBabble I remember the story & the woman artist but I misheard the name! Tho' I still think your character Van M..could have taught Alan Moore a thing or two regarding the powers that thaumaturgical magicians learn the hard way when they get their grimoures mixed up a la Chaos Magic..& Alan Moore seemed to get led astray by the Discordian Pranksters & the OTO did what the Hell's Angels did & began selling Franchise's of Crowley's child the OTO...where I lived prior to a recent move was in a property belonging to a local jeweller who was a traveller with Crowley & my lounge was where they came up with & set up the first chapter of the Golden Dawn...an infamous black magician..or a self promoting kinda early day Wiccan with Sex..as he later gained notoriety as...but to think that when I was sat there alone at night with the poker in my hand playing with the embers..I used to think about his presence in the past probably sat late at night playing with the embers in the same big fireplace & he mebe it says something different to the image he has today but I've lived in some very old properties & of all the places I have ever spent a lot of time or living in..that one place never had any sense of "the other".. good or bad..anywhere at all.. I only discovered the history of his being there back when he's starting up some magical thinking society..how to earn money without having to do anything for it..squandered his family wealth then I think he began to go thru the stash of cash that anyone he could convince they were going to be "illuminated" if they stick with..but as the AntiChrist Superstar reputation preceding but mostly since after his death..his Headless Ritual..aka the Bournemouth Rite & all his demons "roaming in the gloaming" & I think I've even heard it said that it was his presence at Loch Ness that created the Monster Nessie..people who are seeking thrills still go to the burnt out ruins of Boleskin House & end up running away screaming at some sound & whatever they think they hear or see..it's blamed upon Crowley's sloth when it came to closing rituals & infamously it's said he never closed the "mortal portal" opened to converse with his summoned demonic house guests & since he's dead people can say what they think they know of him & as long as you pay for your franchise..ok! I knew the Widow of Philip K. Dick who's my fave author from the genre he probably created a latter day Lovecraft but no Pantheon of the Chthonic Gods..but they had The Rolling Stones..I mean if you don't think that Mick Jagger is a God? Then you're probably Sane! I never liked him & I know my late mate Sid from the founding of Pink Floyd..could have me crying laughing when he spoke about Jagger! But sitting poking the fire where over a century earlier the Beast himself had been & created his first boys club type of Secret Society the Golden Dawn where I sat listening to music that I'm glad Crowley & or Jagger had anything to do with it..the most restful un-infested hearth & home I've ever lived! That once upon a time the great beast himselfness had done prior to..if I was into the Crowley nonsense
I'd have realised that he wasn't quite as great a magician black or white that Music & current devotees have built him upto be Mr. 666..I'd jave probably burnt my Crowley books & groceries? Grimoires! As I never had a single cold spot unless as you know Yorkshire can be Icy still..in the middle of summer! Everywhere is built on a Hill & that was in a place that somebody in the 30s decided to call Windy Hill..I dunno who that was but I suspect he wasn't local as he thought pointing out a hill was windy when the wind isn't even considered weather most of the time as every night I lived there & even if it was as still as a crypt..there was always the sound of a "soughing wind" but was a calm melodic sound that I think was created in the main chimney..due to being on top of the hill but it was not exposed as the curve of hill top landscape seemed to create a windbreak around the property which was old before Crowley ever was there..tho'?
I also kinda wonder if I'd have known about his being there to start one of his magical groups before I went there? I doubt I would have been there at all..I was younger & more gullible so I too maybe would have been afraid to live there as his sloth & failing to close the "mortal portals to the other"..I could have created a monster in my head but then as I'm the family witch & tho I have never practiced magic I do herbal remedies & that would have had me hung in times past..but it's just common sense & knowing your plants..no wands required..but now that I have lived there & my repute for herbal meds & old tools to make them with my kitchen has always caused people to be surprised as I have utensils that work without even a battery inside let alone electricity..so I look like the Witch that everyone recognises since they've been created as much by Hollywood than by Black Magicians tho I would argue that what the Movies are & those who create them tend towards is..kinda the Qlippoth..from the traditional Kabbala! It's all over their work..but I suspect that of late...nothing much else to "remake"..they're busy remaking their medes which are all still in cinemas etc.
But nothing original has come out of Hollywood since..well? Lilian Gish..& the movie I have & love..as it's a very darkly themed tale "the wind"..not on any hill..but I kinda think that would be the remnants of perhaps hyperbrasil..as the desert creeps over the land & is trying to take the house..creepy stuff! Sorry I got your character name wrong but when I heard the line in the story I wasn't thinking of the young woman artists who shows up in that tale of Van M.
I heard Allen Moore & because I enjoy your work & the heroic Van M is wonderful..just thought that perhaps if Moore had been a student of your character..he maybe would have been the Artist he should have been & avoided the Discordian destruction he fell into!
I love Spooky..but gore isn't scary it's just messy to clean up if you're keeping your meat alive & fresh as you take the flesh to cook & eat as & when you need it? I dunno but I find that after the blood & guts I've had in my cauldron..over the fire has never lost the stains..Mr Muscle doesn't help! So thanks for replying..sorry for my Faux Pas? See I think I'm sophisticated..slung a bit of Frog Leg in to impress you! Love the Baba Yaga..Yakka? I don't believe I don't shut up! Haha! Good Sport! 🤐 LnPs ❣️ xx
