The REASON diabetes "runs in the family" is because the family has the same eating habits.

Your story and your moms story is so common and is one of the reasons I stuck it out with GLP1’s. The food noise and extreme carb craving were never going to away on there own nor with keto nor with fasting…and I stuck it out for years. Also, No amount of education and knowledge got me to place where I am today.
Im No longer prediabetic, working out regularly for the 1st time in my life, meal prep is always ready, and I feel like I got my life back.
Dr. Tyna Moore and her conversations on dosing really help me understand how diverse everyone’s journey is.
Also the use of GLP1’s to help people get off hard drugs is really telling on how important this med is and it’s SAD that insurance companies only want to cover it when our disease gets worse.
Good luck to you. Also if you don’t know what food noise is a lot of people of TikTok cover it but the earliest excerpt I’ve ever read is the 1st paragraph in chapt 1 of Bethenny Frankels book Skinny girl rules.

So glad to see that you’re taking your diagnosis seriously. Diabetes affects so many organs in your body. Please talk to your nutritionist because it’s not about cutting out carbs it’s about limiting them and maintaining a consistent blood sugar throughout the day. If folks realized how many carbs they eat on their “regular” diet they would be amazed. Praying for you as you embark on this journey.

Don’t beat yourself up. Everyone seems to view type 2 as a personality shortcoming or moral failure. You are awesome for measuring your blood sugar and not ignoring things. A couple things I learned, lots of fiber and eat under the recommended amount of saturated fat. You got this- it’s scary news, I’m sorry. But you got this! You don’t have to give everything up, just start adding veggies and fiber. Never have sugar by itself. Sorry- not trying to preach, just wanted to offer encouragement.

Yes, fiber is needed to reduce insulin spikes from sugar consumption. But fiber DOES NOT reduce the amount of sugar in your body. Your body STILL has to deal with every bit of sugar you ate.

Your story was my story to the same timetable. I did my bloodwork in December after not eating very well and my AIC was above 7. Had bloodwork again in April and it was 7. Doctor said I have Type 2 Diabetes in May when I went in to ask for a prescription for a glucose meter. He wanted to put me on statins even though my cholesterol was good. I told him no as I wanted to see if I can see what my AIC would be once I watched my diet and exercise. Will get bloodwork next month to see if I can reduce my AIC. I have subscribed to see how you are making out.

Why don't you say she needs to loose weight. What do you mean she looks so good. Even though the Dr's says it has nothing to do with your mother, brother or any one of her families having ty2. It's just what we eat. No one listens when you tell them what to do.

I'm so sorry to learn about your mother. Please accept my condolences. Like you I've recently been diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic and have been trying to educate myself about the condition. When my first blood test indicated that I could be diabetic I came across a book on Amazon called Glucose Revolution by a biochemist called Jessie Inchauspé and it has changed the way I eat. By the time of my 2nd blood test, 15 days after beginning Jessie's approach), my blood sugar had already dropped 2 mmol/mol or from 6.8% to 6.6% (I'm from the UK and I think we have a different method of measuring blood sugar). No foods are off limits (although I've cut Ultra Processed Foods from my diet) because the approach employs a small number of hacks that help mitigate the impact of any carbs you eat - one of these hacks is to have a savoury breakfast, another is to eat vegetables at the beginning of a meal). In agreement with my health provider I have 3 months to see if I can bring my blood sugar down through diet, if I don't manage this I'll go on medication. I am not measuring my blood sugar at home but I'm confident that it will indeed come down. As a result of my new way of eating, which I've been doing for 8weeks or so, I have lost weight (I've dropped 1-2 dress sizes) and am feeling much better than I have for years (so much energy! and my blood pressure is the lowest it has been in years. My husband is also following Jessie's advice and has noted similar benefits. Anyway, I thought I'd pass on this information. I wish you all the very best in your health journey.

Your story is my story but the highest A1C I have tested is 5.9. Last year I decided to lose weight and get out of the Pre diabetic range. I bought a glucose meter and lost 30 pounds. I started listening to people on UA-cam to get educated on diabetes. I had a A1C of 5.4 on my next doctors visit. At that Doctor's visit I tried to get a CGM to learn how to eat. Well my insurance would not approve it and I went from 207 to 219 in Aug 2023 to Jan2024 . Which landed me back in the pre diabetic range. Two weeks ago while listening to Beat Diabetes on UA-cam , Dennis was talking about Stelo CGM which can order without a prescription. Two weeks in and I am learning what I can do. Watermelon makes me spike. Try it if you really don't want to repeat the cycles that lingers in our families. You don't have to remain a diabetic. We also have to learn that as we age we can't eat like we did when we were younger.

Eat chia seeds they lower blood sugar but not too much because it can lower it too low. Make sure you pair it with calcium rich foods to balance the oxalates in chia seeds. Fiber is key in diabetes.

Keep your head up! By checking your blood sugar several times a day, you're already on the right track. I highly recommend two excellent books with lots of blood sugar control tips: Blood Sugar 101 by Jenny Ruhl and 60 Ways to Lower Your Blood Sugar by Dennis Pollock. Dennis also has a UA-cam channel called, Beat Diabetes.

I lost my mom to diabetes too, with multiple problems, including dimentia. She ate a "diabetic diet" and followed her Drs advice and it progressively got worse. If I knew 20-30 yrs ago what I know now about diabetes it possibly could have been reversed, but she wasn't told that she could, she wasn't told to check her levels after meals and neither was I when I was diagnosed. Please be careful with some doctors they're "treating & managing" diseases as the big pharmaceutical companies would have them, that can be reversed. With the knowledge Ive gained on ytube...not my Dr, Im in the process of reversing my T2d with 48 lbs gone & much improved levels. It's a personal decision, but do yourself a favor and binge watch ytube channels like Dr Ken Berry or Dr Berg. The most helpful for me is Dr Ekberg or D Pollock's" beat diabetes " channel and let the glucose meter guide you, it doesn't lie.

Thank you Tales of a Diva for sharing your story. I am 55 yrs old & just went to dr. last week. My A1C shot up to 6.1 I had been able to keep it in the lower 5's. My mom died 6yrs ago at 67 yrs old from Type 2 Diabetes. Our stories sound. My mom smoked, drank soda non stop & ate sugar & carbs. She had one foot cut off & then a toe on her remaining foot. Then had a 7+ hour surgery to open veins in her legs. She was on insulin. She was very stubborn & said she was going to live the way she wanted. Before she died she was in intensive care for a week , rehab for a month & then hospice at home. I am so glad to see you are taking the steps to get your health back on track. As am I. As Maya Angelo said " when we know better we do better" I wish our moms would have followed that advice. We can't change their outcome but we can change ours. Best Wishes to you on this new journey of health & wellbeing. ❤

Very good. It's super that you caught this at such a young age and have a lot of time to make the changes you need to live a healthy life and break the cycle you've seen in your family. It's wonderful that you're checking your blood sugar to see which foods work for you and which don't. That's the key. At some point you might want to purchase a CGM to get even more real time data vs having to stick your finger so much. You could wear it for a few weeks and not have to make a long term financial commitment. Best of luck on your journey!

@@mjsblessings7498 oh no! What happened? I'm so sorry to hear that. I've been on mounjaro and it has changed my life for the better. I've been keto on and off before and found it so hard to stick to. But I do eat way lower carb than I did in the past. Im glad that you have found a system that is working for you. If you don't mind sharing, what happened on ozempic? I try to stay aware of all possibilities in case I feel something wrong I can hopefully notice it soon and act quickly. I have a friend taking OZ but she is trying to switch to something else. It is nerve racking not knowing the long term affects of these medications and people having complications.

@PinkOwl31 Good morning. I was among the very early GLP-1 agonist takers. This was several years ago, and the medicine was called Victoza and was injected daily. Although it has evolved, the drug action is the same and therefore has the same common side effects in people. Let me start by saying that this class of drugs is very effective at lowering blood glucose as well as weight loss. Many people take it with great success. This is simply my testimony. I am a petite woman to begin with, and I had no idea how much weight I would lose. Initially, things were fine. I had the expected gastric disturbances. That went away within a few weeks. I was humming along, and my blood glucose numbers were coming down very effectively. I began having stomach troubles again and thought it was just normal side effects. One day, I was suddenly so sick I could hardly stand up. Then came the vomiting, etc. After 24 hours of this, I was so frail that my husband said this was not normal, and he swooped me up to the ER. When I arrived, I was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and lipase enzyme levels that warranted an ICU admission. Finally, after 6 days, I ended up needing to have my gall bladder removed because it was so damaged. I was a crash test dummy for these drugs nearly 10 years ago. Back then, there was very little info about side effects other than thyroid cancer possibility and gastric upset. My parents as well as a very good friend are on these drugs. I am cautiously optimistic as they are getting good results. I do see the benefits, but I usually share my story as a cautionary tale. Best wishes to you on your journey, my friend. MJ- John 3:16
