For overall use, I'll pickup the Shure SM58. The proximity effect and plosives test is better on the SM58.
But for vocals, XM8500 is my pick if I don't have the budget.
Good take
Build quality for the money.... shure. The 58 had a bit better tighter and robust low end. If I needed multiple mics for a one off project or something, I might just grab the behringers... but for my use personally, Shure.
Both are great, but I vote for the Behringer. Was my first ever XLR mic, so I’m biased for sure
And that's perfectly OK
The Behringer sounds amazing for the price, could almost be fooled into thinking it's the sound of a 58. They've got the voicing down tight, just a tad bright, and a wee tad thin on the bottom. But one reason the 58 is $100 is it's bulletproof, great for live sound reinforcement. You probably don't need that in a mic for UA-cam videos. That said, for the money, it's the Behringer.
I know the shure is bulletproof but I feel any good dynamic is sturdy enough to last the test of time
With xm8500 as my first dynamic mic…it pains me to say the shure sm58 is the runaway winner for me. I can’t deny how much this mic does for me every week from using it for speaking live on Sundays, using for our vocalists on Sundays, and sounds great on a podcast. build quality is legendary…it has no flaws…at least for me.
The 48 is more clear than thd xm8500 so 58 also wins for me
It's hard to beat for shure
I have both of these too but I think if you add the windscreen on the XM8500 it's pretty much on par imo. It rounds all the sibilance of the Xm8500. Imo the Xm8500 NEEDs a windscreen, it sounds so much better with it.
And a big one at that. If the vote stays this close....may need a follow up with a big windscreen
I completely agree. We ended up using a windscreen and a pop-filter at the same time for classical vocal recordings. I tried using just the pop-filter, and it sounded a bit more harsh. It was also much harder to EQ. The windscreen on its own lets too many plosives through in our application.
im very torn on this. ive found the shock rejection of xm8500 to be pretty poor, needing to be as fixed in place as possible on an arm with shock mount, but ive never liked how muddy the proximity effect of the sm58 is... but that mic'll probably last forever.. sm58 it is ;-;
I honestly feel like the xm8500 will last forever too
For UA-cam or similarly low fidelity applications, hard not to reccommend the xm8500. Not enough difference to justify $70. Of course, I'm a Shure fanboy, so I'd still spring for the SM58.
Throw a SM57 with the presidential foam cap on it into a later duel!
☝️
XM85 is a better buy. The 58 is a bit cleaner but too light, in my opinion. But price wise. It's a no-brainer. The XM85. I got 2 so far. Getting 2 more. Good video.
Too light? Lost me there. And yeah it's gonna be hard to EVER fine a better $30 dynamic mic than the xm85000
My wallet screams "Deminishing Returns!" For $25-$29 bucks the Behringer XM8500 is quite frankly a slam dunk. Especially when you are talking about a person buying one of these with their hard earned money and using for general digital content creation. The "average" digital content consumer experiences digital content on their phone that literally fits in their hand. That includes the screen and speakers. In that scenario, coupled with most digital content distribution algorithms, they more than likely, will not be able to tell the difference. Save the difference and buy some sort of sound blanket or other sound treatment to treat a section of the room out of frame that would otherwise introduce undesirable audio artifacts. Or maybe at this point pocket the difference and use it to maybe buy a lunch or a dinner for the family at Mc D's... LOL .. is it just me or is everything just getting stupid expensive? In the event that the buyer is responsible to purchase some mic to be used in a non repeatable event, say a television award ceremony then opt for the Shure SM58. That way in case something goes awry with the audio at that live performance, the idiot who tanked the event cannot blame it on the equipment purchaser for "buying a cheap mic that failed and ruined the whole DANG thing." Just saying... or maybe the Shure SM58 would be a better purchase for a studio that is attempting to set some sort of a perceived image with the talent that is paying for the use of that studio. As well for the home or personal small studio creator the black grill of the Behringer XM8500 would tend to introduce less refections into the lens/camera when the on the screen talent prefers to show the mic in frame. For me in this scenario... XM-8500 FTW!!! Thanks for sharing Bark. Edit - Oh ya... if just starting out on a tight budget, after buying the XM8500, or use the difference to buy an audio cable, and dynamic mic interface and the cable to connect that interface to the computer or maybe some other piece of gear that you might need like headphones.
All very valid points!
I listened to this blindly not watching the video itself just listening. And it just sounded great. Both mics deliver. Already took the xm8500 home but def gonna get an sm58 used as well! Another great one Bark! Can’t wait to see the winner.
Agreed. I forgot how solid the xm8500 was
The xm8500 is a hit and miss. It really depends on your voice. For deeper voices it's fine, but not the other way around. The SM58 will perform on any voice.
Agree 100%
I think it comes down to whether you need the better behavior (in terms of off axis rejection, handling noise etc) of the 58 and whether that's worth $60 to you.
Indeed
The SM58 is the heavyweight champ. The XM8500 is the pound-for-pound champ.
My vote has to go to the 58. It’ll last longer and take more of a beating than 4-5 XM8500s.
I believe I'm with you
@@ObscureMics if you’re not taking the xm8500 on the road, and you’re careful with it, then it’s a great choice for the money.
Sometimes I hear the 58 and despise it. Sometimes I pull it out and it’s quite pleasant (TWSS). Today, gotta give it to the 58.
Oooooo. GREAT TWSS moment
For live on stage, as a FOH I grab the SM58 and SM57 for a lot of thing to mic up just because with only those to mics I can create a good mix. So for stage use I'll buy the SM58. You can hang it in a glass of beer, throw it against the wall and when it is dry, you can use it again. I don't know how the XM8500 deals with that. So that is the only reason I would go for the SM58. Sound/price wise. the XM8500 does definitely not sound like a $29 mic. Remark; I have to not listened to this with my good pair of head phones but just on my MacBook pro, but well done Behringer.
I remember back in the day that there was a joke that anything Behringer made where different kinds of doorstops, but that hasn't been true for quite a few years now. But it is hard to shake that image once you have it. But when there is a 30-day or something money back I will at least try the cheaper Behringer and not browse past it like I did 10 years ago.
Good post. Yeah the behringer sounds way better than $29.....but yeah I doubt it could withstand the beer glass treatment
How can "less than professional applications" apply to the SM58? I attended a concert by one of the top indie pop bands of all time at a major local venue this week, and I counted seven SM58's on the stage.
If i said something along those lines about the 58, i misspoke. Definitely THEE professional stage mic
XM85 is a better buy.
Definitely hard to argue that its not
Ehh, that's a tough, close call... I love XM8500, it definitely is the best you can get for the price. But if you increase the price 3x, SM58 wins. So I pick Shure as the winner.
I lean to the Shure as well.
@@ObscureMics Yeah, the difference in stuff like handling noise was clearly showing what you pay the extra for - reliability basically. Soundwise sm58 is a bit smoother to me, but both are champs in that regard.
58 forever 😂
I'm with ya
Sounds ok but that's it.
Both?
Shure ahead of Behringer. Base tier mics that do the job. A bit of eq and you can do good things.
I would like to hear what you think about the sm48 vs xm8500
Funny you say that....winner of these one faces the sm48 in round 2
