Correction: It is the year 10 000 AFTER the "Butlerian Jihad" and that is itself about 10 000 years in the future. That means from our perspective the story of Dune plays about 20 000 years in the future.
After mankind freed itself from being enslaved by A.I., they started a new calendar and the story of Dune plays about 10 000 years after that new "Year Zero".

I've read the Dune books and saw the previous film and tv series adaptations. About these ones: part one was very nice. But part two was such a drag! Bad pacing (no sense of how much time passes between events), weird continuity things (his hair is the same all the time?), boring nemesis (neither feyd-rautha nor the emperor are very impressive) and they changed the ending of book 1! Chani didn't leave? Fremen fighting the houses in space? Wut?

Chani, for example. In the movie, she ain’t with all the prophecy shit and gets mad when Paul asks for Irulan’s hand in marriage. In the book, she unconditionally supports him even with the Irulan stuff cause she knows it’s only for political convenience.

Two things in the movie (and the books) made/make no sense:
1.) We see in the beginning that every soldier has anti-gravity technology and can just switch on some device and then just drift upwards till he switches it off again.
If that is the case, that begs 2 questions:
Why do they need those helicopter-things and why didn't the Sardaukar just do that to avoid the sand worms during the battle at the end?
You would just have to switch that thing on and jump and fly upwards, evading the sand worm. Instead they just run around like headless chicken.
2.) If apparently those special shields everyone has explode like nuclear bombs when they get hit by lasers, then it makes no sense that noble families would keep stashes of regular nuclear bombs and treat them like family heirlooms.
Why, if basically every little soldier is effectively walking around with a nuclear bomb on his belt?
That whole "Your grand-grandfather's nuclear bombs are real power!"-speech makes no sense then.
You could just place a shield generator next to the thing you want to nuke, shoot a laser at it from a safe distance and have the same effect.
Besides, the movies were very inconsistent with the whole shield-thing. First the first movie shows and explains how those shields work and that you can only get though them with slow movements, then for the rest of the two movies everybody just stabs and slashes each other at regular speed and the fight choreography doesn't take the shield and "slow" thing into account at all.
I have to say, while both movies were super pretty and the production and sound design were great and I enjoyed many individual sequences (like the stuff on Giedi Prime or the duel between Paul and Fayt), I was a bit disappointed with the second movie.
The end battle was very anticlimactic and felt rushed. The sand worms didn't get much love and were kind of just part of the background, over all.
Both aspects were actually better made in the silly old Dune movie from the 80s. The battle felt more epic and took longer and the sand worms were portrayed as more amazing and awe-inspiring.
There was way too much boring bla bla scenes in the desert in the second movie and stuff that was kind of pointless and superfluous, like the nuclear bomb stash scene, for example. That just didn't need to be there. Nobody would have cared if some mountain would have exploded without a long scene explaining why and how first. It wasn't really relevant to how the battle played out anyways.
Also the stuff showing how the "Water of Life" was harvested was way longer than it needed to be.
And of course worst of all was the lack of chemistry between Paul and Chani and how their romance felt like lifted from some lame teeny drama TV show.
I also don't like the changes from the book that were made.
In the book Paul and Chani already have 2 children together at the time the last battle happens and how she deals with her fate as Paul's concubine while he marries the Emperor's daughter for political reasons is the most interesting thing about her character.
It is lame that they had to throw all that out just to make her a "strong independent girlboss wamen who don't need no man" and have her storm off like a petulant child.
That did nothing for the story or for her character.
1. IDK, they didnt have floating like that in the books. the baron used tech to make him lighter but iirc they had no levitation devices like that. Using them to land lightly I didnt really have issues with, using them to superman up cliff faces was off.
2. The shield interaction is unreliable/unpredictable. It CAN set off an atomics like blast, it CAN travel back to the one firing and anything in the area. IIRC in the books they use the atomics to take down the shield wall only. They dont use atomics against people, only against natural geography. Destroying the shield wall allows the storm to overwhelm the shields w/ dust and debris.
I am most disappointed by the lack of guild influence in the movie. The imperial throne, the landsrad and the guild are all side notes or almost completely ignored. Still like the movie though. I never expected perfection but some choices do seem off or really strained.
Idk about them trying to make her a girl boss. If they wanted to make her a girl boss, IMO, theyd have just kept her as is. She is a strong, independent realist that does what needs to be done for her family and people. In the movie they seem to be trying to make her a reluctant side piece for the white savior. I also think the VAST majority of people never read any of the books, much less the sequels. They likely want to make some problem that they can resolve as in the books (IIRC) shes very much the pragmatist and doesnt cause any kind of friction with paul. Only irulan and jessica (its been a while from reading the entire series icbw)
@@101wormwood But that is the thing. The term Girlboss describes not actually strong female characters, but what shitty modern Hollywood writers consider a strong female character, which is usually just a moody, petulant adult child or a woman who behaves like a man.
So what I am criticizing is that they did the same thing they always do. They replaced a actually realistic strong female character with a modern, fake-strong Girlboss character.
We see space ships hovering and also ascending without the use of rocket motors or anything like that in the first movie, so it is movie canon that they have anti-gravity technology. In the first movie we just always see soldiers using it to slowly descend, never to go up again until the beginning of the second movie.
In the first movie it could have been explained away with it not being anti-gravity technology, but something like a magnetic link that connects them to the aircraft they just jumped out of, kind of like "magnetic rope", in a way.
But as I said, when we see the Harkonnen soldiers just switching off gravity and gliding up that rock formation, at that moment it became silly that nobody ever uses that ability to get themselves out of trouble in both movies.
With the shields and the lasers:
Even if it is kind of random, it would still make sense to just have a unmanned laser gun fire at the shield surrounding the emperor's palace. If it goes wrong, you lose a laser gun, if it goes right, you win the battle with the push of a button.
In my opinion Herbert should have come up with a better explanation for why people in the year 20 000 still need to stab each other with knives and swords.

The rest appears to be critiques of the material and adaptation. You can poke holes in any movie plot by not suspending disbelief. If I wanted I could pick a thousand holes in it, or just about any fantasy story, at the end of the day I enjoyed the first installment more than the second, but expect to enjoy all of them more than I have the vast majority of films ive watched in the last 10 yrs.
I agree, second movie wasn't good. I don't understand why people are rating it so highly. 8.8 on imdb from over 300k votes! More like a 6 imho. Maybe less, as it was definitely too long.
I'm no Dune scholar, but it looked to me that they could only levitate if they were following the gradient of the cliffs, meaning they can't levitate very high. If you look at the scene again, they stay close to the cliffs.
