Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, born in Deventer in 1562, was a prominent Dutch composer and organist of the late 16th century. Known as the "Orpheus of Amsterdam," he spent most of his career as an organist at the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. Sweelinck's Chorale Variations stand out as masterpieces in his diverse and original compositions. His works have highly inspired many subsequent generations of composers, including Reincken, Bach and many others.
