Shari Ulrich - Every Road

- This video was filmed in 1990 (hence the 80's hair!). I was 5 months pregnant with my daughter. Now Julia just engineered and produced my latest solo album "Everywhere I Go". The road does indeed wind around through unexpected twists and turns and if we're lucky...regularly leads to places that feel like home.
One of the most under rated "singer-songwriters" ever!
Three fabulous women singers from the 80's - Ferron, Connie Kaldor, and yourself - have stuck in the back of my mind. Such evocative songs cannot be allowed to disappear, so many thanks for adding this to the canon of Canadian 'folkies'. I gave your album to my girlfriend (now life partner) when we moved to Salt Spring in '89, and she always played us the tape on the drive into Ganges. And, bless her, Jennifer found this for us today... and it brought preckles to our eyes (and ringing to our ears - Jennifer wanted it played LOUD). As fresh and as emotive as ever. Thankyou, Shari, for adding to our lives and memories.
thank you debm dumplin
Thanks to you all for your great comments. I didn't even realize folks posted comments here (I'm slow to learn) so it's very heartwarming to hear such nice words. THANK YOU!!!!
Oh man...what a GREAT story! It's been way too long since I've played Winnipeg. I"ve applied to the Folk Fest but haven't heard yet. I'm solo touring for the first time ever (if you can believe that) and FINALLY learned to play Every Road on the piano for these shows. Very happy about that!
Shari
still love this song i agree leads you home .........Shari
I haven't heard Shari Ulrich sing for years. I will never forget her concert out in Calgary, where she sang the Joe Mock song (Fear of) Flying. wow what a voice.
How can that be? I've never stopped! Tell me where you are and I'll tell you when I'll be doing a show there. :-)
I can't believe you have found my post. I went to University at Western Ontario and I saw Valdy perform at the ? Fryfogel's? We all had so much fun. I can't remember if it was before or after your Home Town Band concerts. Someone said you have to buy that album - so i did - on vinyl. Now it has been how many years? ...since 1980 that i have wanted to hear that concert where Valdy introduced you and you sang with your voice enchanting everyone in the huge hall (out west). I think I stopped breathing and cried as this was the song that allowed me to be a little more free. My spirit inside of me was being squashed by my controlling, but very loving parents. I used to play this song over and over (as well as Ricki Lee Jones Company) and other heart wrenching songs that young teen girls adore!!!
My mother passed away exactly a year ago and and the night before she died when she had been completely bed-ridden and not even strong enough to have a sip of her 'perfect, beloved' Earl Grey tea. When i asked her in the morning if she wanted to go for a lovely hike outside tomorrow? (or push her down the hall to the 'room with a view'), she said - No that's okay Norah as i will be 'Flying' with the birds tomorrow. In the middle of the night I awoke to my mother reaching out her arms to the heavens...she passed away in the morning. I am reaching out to every medium that i can to help my healing process. I just fond your song on Utube - (Fear of Flying) and yes it is indeed helping me heal. Thank you for your sentiments in song. You have truly touched my heart. Please let me know if there is another song that you recommend. I feel now that i truly have the rest of my life to live with open arms and a 'love of flying'. Thanks.
I live in Collingwood, Ontario, near Blue Mountain Resorts and if you could come to Toronto and would like to play a concert at Blue Mountain, i am certain that i could arrange that. If you would like to come to visit me at Osler Bluff Ski Club, where i work as the Social Events Coordinator in the winter, i would love to hear you sing a song. Perhaps you can come for our final dinner dance on April 18th. We have our local band playing - Not Ottawa, a number of members, professional that LOVE their music. I am sure that we could find you an amazing chalet to stay in...right at the base of our very exclusive private ski hill. I am going to make a wish, say a prayer and ask you again to please accept my sincere request to come and join us here at the club and sign one song...there is one other song that you may have heard...or sang already...Jesus take the wheel...I don't know who wrote it but it too makes me cry.
I am not a bible thumbing, crazy lady...i am just a girl that had a terribly broken heart...that is healing in it's time. I would be so honoured to meet you. I did meet Valdy when he played at a fundraiser in Southampton 5years ago?
a bientot, Happy Almost Easter!
obscsocial Thank you for the stories! And the kind words. Yay music!
Can you share your chords please. I have a mandolin and want to learn.

Yeah that was great in 86 Shari Especially when you sat down with my friends and I after you performed and I told you about the songs I was writing, and you were very uplifting for me. Susan
This song evokes so many memories for me. I have always loved your music and was lucky enough to work with Jim Woodyard on my demos back in the day. I sit in a hospital bed now listening to this song and many other that keep me strong ❤️

I had the pleasure of being one of your support acts in the early 1990's. I loved your voice and music then - still do. Glad to find this on YT. Cheers from one half of "Open Mind".
I'd like to know if you ever play Mb again as well... I'd be there. I didnt' know you had recorded with Bim until I got cruising the Utubes, another one of my fav performers from the 70's.

I recently pulled my LPs out of the closet and enjoyed all of my Shari Ulrich records ... now I have been listening to the greatest hits CD a lot again ... really love and appreciate your music ... remember meeting you at the Wpg. Folk Fest, and you chatted for a few minutes while walking to the backstage area ... good memory. Lots of love
@Smpeel SO great to hear from you!!! You guys were the best thing to come out of Expo! I'd love to catch up.
Shari, this song is one of my anthems. LOVE it!! Seen you many times... enjoyed the very small venue in Nelson, B.C. best. Live or recorded, your music always brings me 'home'. :-)
I remember it was in 82 or 83 when i went to the PNE and i was up on one of those sky cable things that took you across from end to end and as i passed over the concert stage i heard the voice of an angel down below. Once i got off i went back to the stage area and found out that the voice was that of Shari Ulrich. And the song was she remembers. I still have that song on 45 and it sounds just as good as the day i bought it. Please come to Winnipeg
Thank you!! That does my heart good!
Thanks for taking the time to write.
See you out there I hope!
Shari
It is an irony that a man who has loved music all his life finds at 60 that the appreciation is complimented so much by feeling it instead of simply by hearing it. Thank you again. Ryan
I love this song - I love you're music - I left Manitoba in the fall of 1990 to move to Victoria, BC. I was 27 years old back then. This song and the entire album I played in my car well traveling to the unknown west coast of Canada as a scared little 27 year old guy. Makes me want to go back to my roots, one day I will.
Shari I will always treasure your music.
Cheers
Thomas Sigurdsson
I found you by accident, well and alot of searching. I love your voice. I loved it back when they played you on the local radio station every day. Haven't heard your songs or your awesome voice in years and though I'm happy that I was able to enjoy your songs again, my favourite was Oh Daddy. It was such a haunting and beautiful melody. Iam sure I am not alone when I tell you, I love your music and I thank you for sharing, and bringing back such incredible memories :-)

Thank you for posting these.... I was at A&M during those days. Life was so much simpler then. It was all about the music.
Awww....thank you for your kind words. I'll never stop making music.
There are no accidents in God's world. Bless you for being the poet you are.

Who produced this Shari? I totally know the song ... really great and love the video.

What a great song !!!
Thanks Ralph!
used to hear this on a canadian fm station out of sarnia. wish i could find the album
Easy to find! Just go to my website - www.shariulrich.com/DSC10.php?offset=10&entry_id=11
says it's "currently unavailable for purchase", and while it shows the album cover, there are no track listings
i also live in the states, so i've never seen it anywhere
Don't know what you're looking at - that is the link to the CD on my website and it lists the tracks and is definitely available for sale. It's true - it's not available in stores in the states, but is for sale directly from me. There's nothing I see on the site that says "currently unavailable for purchase". I'm a bit baffled.
