Spies was good but Duane is a legend. I believe they both played for the Boks at the right time. I don’t think Spies beats Duane in the past 2 world cups because of the type of game we played which was quite more defensive. Sure if we were running all the time, Spies… but that just wasn’t the game we played and getting a ton of high balls back where we were dependant on rock solid defence, turnovers and limited mistakes - Duane’s the man.
Spies was a genetic freak of an athlete. He was a Wing in the body of an 8. Duane was the perfect 8. Strong, big, imposing ball carrier, mobile and agile. Duane was the better 8, SPies was a better athlete. However, I pick Duane at 8, and you can put Spies on the bench or somewhere like Centre.
Vermeulen is a more traditional Number 8, and better suited to the position. Spies was an unusual physical specimen for the position. Both were great Springboks. Vermeulen just shades Spies. Spies would have been devastating with Rassie as coach, particularly in the Bomb Squad running at tired bodies.
Vermeulen was very powerful and smart, he could bulldoze a defense line and still be able to offload while being tackled, dangerous 8. Spies was 3x because he was powerful, very smart, he could read the field just like a backline player and he could easily gain ground because of his fast pace, you could put him at number 12 or 13 he would do the job. Spies was ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
DVM NR8 - Spies NR14 (Spies could have prolonged his career at wing and would have been right up there with Lumo as one on the greatest ever) - dont get me wrong he was a awesome 8 but I think at wing he would have unstopable
It's not about the player, but about the unit. Spies, Danie Rossouw, Victor and Bakkies were top class and because of this they were the better unit. Vermeulen with Kolisi, Etsebeth and Pieter Steph Du Toit were also top class, but in this group Vermeulen had to play the hard man role, where Spies could play the role of the finisher. Spies is unequaled in world rugby and he not got sick, he would have been a legend that rivaled Jonah Lomu.
Vermeulen easily... Spies was just a long range ball carrier and at times cover defender. Vermeulen was way better at Breakdown steals, high ball management, in a world cup final he's the best. Spies was a Super Rugby Player
Vermeulen, he's more consistent and dependable than spies. Spies was average in the wet. And would mess up catching the high ball occasionally. Dwayne was on point Mr consistent. Spies has freaky solo trys though
Spies was a deadly 8th man. Powerful, exlosive, fast. He started playing 8 late but still was one of the best on form. And nothing wrong with his defense.
Spies was a absolute beast and definitely amongst the best of the best 8s. But Duane... he was called Thor for a reason... that man had godlike 8 qualities.
People forget how, towards the end of his carrier, Pierre Spies was now a punching bag for how he was soft and did not have the testicular fortitude for his position.
If both in their prime you start Vermeulen and Spies is in the bomb squad

Difficult but probably Spies an absolute unit, serious ball carrier!👌💪🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🏈🏈🏈🏈💯💯💯💯
Who else thinks Duane for the best No.8 of all time though??
He did have it all, power on attack, lethal on defence and a great leader as well.
Thor is the ultimate package, the mold for the modern eight man. Spies is a next level athlete.
Who you starting and who you benching though?
Yeah man totally agree 👍
@@RugbyNow_Duane starts, beats people up, tenderize them, steals balls and Spies comes when everyone is tired and runs the show

Love these thoughts. Thank you 🙏
Spies was fast, Vermeulen was powerful.
im always going to pick Spies
both magnificent
Spies for impact Vermeulen for consistency.
Vermuelen is the answer to this question. The best Bok 8 of the professional era.
Spies..perfect no 8
Both, 1 for bomb squad and one for starting
Piere Spies!!!💯🎉💪🤝
Pierre Spies

Spies is a Legend, but I'd take Duane. I think he brings more to a team
Has the leadership aspect as well
In terms of defense and aggression Vermeluan but offense and speed Spies. Spies at 111kg ran 10.75s in 100m
Duane Is the best
DVM highlights are all in test matches. Spies highlights are club games.....in the big test matches Duane is the better player.
Spies
Once Spies juice wore off and he could not refill, he was just average!
Vermeulen all the way!
Spies owned Duane back in Super Rugby. Spies everyday of the week
Both good ,and truly legends
DVM NR8 - Spies NR14 (Spies could have prolonged his career at wing and would have been right up there with Lumo as one on the greatest ever) - dont get me wrong he was a awesome 8 but I think at wing he would have unstopable
Spies and Kwagga in a Bomb squad of 7.

Spies is in the bombsquad vermulen starts
Big Duane all day
Forget your sentiments. On the evidence of this video, Pierre all the way. He is way more difficult to stop and he makes more meters.
turnovers by DVM won many tests something Spies was not good at
For me Vermeulen, just more consistent
Vermeulen easily... Spies was just a long range ball carrier and at times cover defender. Vermeulen was way better at Breakdown steals, high ball management, in a world cup final he's the best. Spies was a Super Rugby Player
Duane for sure💪 our best

if only Spies had Thors mongrel
Well said
Thor all day, every day for the full 80. Spies should have been converted to a 12, although his defensive abilities might have counted against him
Spies was a deadly 8th man. Powerful, exlosive, fast. He started playing 8 late but still was one of the best on form. And nothing wrong with his defense.
Thor every single day of the week!!
As jy Vermeulen in Spies se lyf sit, is hy stukkend binne 2 minute...
Thor 10/10 Spies 7/10
Thor had a much longer in SA than Spies.
Spies was a absolute beast and definitely amongst the best of the best 8s. But Duane... he was called Thor for a reason... that man had godlike 8 qualities.
Thor!!!!
They were both excellent nr 8's. Vermeulen slightly the better of the two imho.
Duanne every time
Just like eben has now passed bakkies BOTHA the original first generation enforcer ..thor has done the same.........
Duane any day and twice on Sundays!👍👍
People forget how, towards the end of his carrier, Pierre Spies was now a punching bag for how he was soft and did not have the testicular fortitude for his position.
Daymani is like spies strong and fast
Gary Teichman
If u truly believe spies was better than thor then quit watching rugby
Hands Downs Duan Vermeulin .
Spies was highly overrated. Lazy at the breakdown and scared of contact. Vermeulen the obvious choice.
Spies steroids. He will remain forever tainted as a result
