I’m 26 and well past making any teams or going to tryouts but I still find your videos mad helpful. I’m 6ft and played the 5 all throughout high school so I’m literally learning new ways to look at things even at my age
So I have this problem where I play down to the level of my opponents that I’m better than. But it’s not just that either like these guys will be able to guard me but it messes with my head because everyone acknowledges my skill that’s watching from the side and the way I move and everything is so much more polished and knowing that these guys aren’t as good as me and are getting stops on me completely obliterates my confidence and I start playing down to their level and I somehow forget how to dribble. But other times I’m playing the same people and look like a god amongst mortals. This is only recently do you have an explanation.
Is it they're getting stops because you just miss or because they play good defense? If it's the former don't worry so much, everyone has bad shooting days and you can still provide a lot of value to your team by just making good decisions, playing defense and just good basketball. If they actually play good defense and make it hard on you then they earned the stops. In that case you might be too overconfident. Just because you're better offensively doesn't necessarily mean they're easy to score on, it's a different skillset. Also don't forget it's a team game, not 1v1. There are many ways to lose a defender using screens, cuts etc. Also when they play good D and you don't get a good position the best choice is often to just pass the ball, get out of the way and try something different. If you try to go iso all the time it's low IQ basketball unless it's a clear mismatch. You can try to film yourself while playing and review it later to check your decision making on the court. Also always respect your opponents. Don't assume it'll be easy. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, your defenders as well. They might be strong but have bad conditioning -> tire them out by running your ass off. They might be tall but slower than you -> better to drive or shoot than post up. They might lock you up when you have the ball but forget about you when you're in the corner -> many chances to cut and move off the ball for easy shots. You don't want to play to their strengths but to their weaknesses. Stay humble bro and use your head, then you'll be fine.
Hey, I love watching your videos, and this one particularly relates to me as I am going to 12th Grade, and this is the second summer where I trained hard but I’m worried that I’m not going to have improved enough to get an offer. I was wondering where would be the best place to contact you personally about basketball! Also, how can we train 0.5 movements!
