Good!! We will be doing another video with their newest console in the coming weeks too. It’s a great mix in size between the standard and large helms.
I’ve never needed to oil a helm to be honest. Usually the helm has grease in it from the factory and it never really breaks down or has anything get corroded because it’s protected from the elements and the wear and tear in it is pretty light. You could put some white lithium on the cable that inserts into the helm, but beyond that it shouldn’t need anything. Usually stuff steering is a result of the cable, not the helm. For a few hundred dollars you can install a whole new helm and cable these days!!
Great job, would you please tell me about the whole electronic, electrical , machinery required to be fitted in pantoon in general Thanks so much for your assistance
Hey Tom, wondering if that glove box would fit on the smaller basic consul? I’ve got a stereo going top left and a 6 switch, USB and 12 volt plugin going top right? Thanks again.
That’s great input! I’ll pass it along to them. They recommend mounting bigger graphs on the left or right side, on the back side of where the stereo or switch panel goes.
It’s been on back order a while now. I just posted another video showing how to make a marine panel from Amazon work using the Pontoon Stuff Wiring Harness. That’s what I’ll be doing until they’ve got their panels back in stock!!
I need a new helm put in with all necessary gauges, but can't find any marina to do it for me. I need help! I'm not sure if I could do it myself...maybe with your guidance??? 🙂
I've got all sorts of videos that talk about consoles and the accessories that go into them including gauges. I seriously can't believe a marina doesn't want to take on that project. I wouldn't be cheap, but they should be able to knock that out for you no problem!
I live in Washington PA, not an area with lot's of lakes, but there are several marinas. I get the excuse of, "I'm too busy", I don't work on pontoons", or "that is off-season work". Meanwhile, no one returns your call in the off season. I fully expect to pay around $2000 to have it done...gauges installed in the unit, but no takers. 😢
I want to purchase a helm with necessary gauges already installed. I believe I could actually install it on the pontoon, but not sure about purchasing the correct gauges, cutting the helm using templates, wiring them to the circuit board, etc., but I couldn't find anything like that anywhere.
@@travisclosser7368 WHAT A SERIOUS BUMMER! Pontoon stuff just released their gauge cluster and switch panel on their website for the large helm. The gauge cluster must be integrated into your motor rigging, but the switch panel is an easy plug and play option using their wiring harness, or can we worked into an existing electrical harness. $850 for the combo of the two panels (save 5% with our discount code). I would ask those marinas if you can ask to hire one of their mechanics to moonlight and install it for you on a weekend for cash. The right owner or service manager would love to help their mechanics out like that!!
I believe I will do this. With your very detailed videos, and Pontoon stuff parts, I feel confident. You're great, buddy! "When" I find success with this project, I will remember you!
Awesome!! I’m so glad my channel has been helpful along the way for you! The bit is a Dremel brand “1/8 in. Rotary Tool Multi-Purpose Cutting Bit”. Home Depot carries them…best $5 spent!
I’m working on a video right now installing one for an Evinrude…Similar process though. Hope to share that this week! Otherwise, check our instagram for pictures.
It’s an entire helm system, not just the wheel. It’s available in rotary cable and not too difficult to install. Your old cable would work with it if it’s out of a rotary quick release helm.
Greetings Tom and viewers, that 7 circuit switch panel was very nice and it fit perfectly in that corner spot. Is that something you fabricated or is it an accessory I can purchase for that specific console? I have that console carted on the pontoon stuff website.
That panel was from back when we were spoiled with the pre-made switch panels Pontoon Stuff sold. They will have them back in the future, but sourcing that sort of component has been a nightmare through COVID and competing with the big boat manufacturers who are building hundreds of thousands of boats a year between all the brands. That switch panel is plug and play with their harness...when they're back in stock I'll be purchasing as many as I can afford to inventory so that I never run out of them again! I've had to rely on some of the options on Amazon in the meantime, which you'll find info about on other videos on my channel.
@@tomspontoons I know all about part availability. I decided to lay a carbon fiber vinyl onto the console to make a luxurious background when I set in the electronics and accessories into the console. Check out the many options offered on Amazon.
I just ran my steering cable back to the motor, only to find that straight horizontal entry into the steering bracket is not possible because of the decking. The rod end is, obviously, rigid and is forced upward at the tip rather than level. Can't get the end piece into the steering bracket. Help! I started chiseling the bottom of the decking, but not sure that will allow the back of that rod to go high enough, especially with the fitting for tightening. Is that supposed to be run before decking is put on? Not sure what the fix is except to cut out part of the decking and repairing it later. Suggestions?
Sometimes the motor has to be removed to install the steering cable. I’m not sure I’m picturing it right so email me some pictures of the dilemma! TomsPontoons@gmail.com
When measuring where to place the console, taking into consideration a 20' steering cable length, how far forward can I go to the front of the pontoon? Do I allow for a certain amount above deck to large console steering? How much? (You could probably tell me how far forward you've gone on builds with enough slack, eh?) What's a good rule of thumb in how to measure (pretend I'm really dumb when considering your answer with details... cause I am).
Great question. On an 8’ wide boat I start with 4’ (motor to starboard edge) + 4’ from underdeck to insert into helm (needs a curve under the console from the through hole to the insert of the rotary helm), that would leave you about 12’ forward from the rear. Better to have a bit of slack and s-curve it along the Pontoon than to be short and need to buy a new one!!!
@@BuenoToob sorry to be a bummer! You definitely can order a longer cables. Assuming it’s a rotary quick connect, just go do a google search and you’ll find them in one foot increments. We had to order a 27’ long one for our houseboat!!
I have more of a question my boat currently has a 14 ft steermaster cable going to a 70hp johnson 1990s Can I just replace it with a teleflex cable 14 ft having trouble finding the steermaster there is a lot more teleflex cables around
I’ve never actually seen or heard of a steermaster system. Your safest bet would be to purchase the entire helm and cable kit. Pontoon Stuff sells the kit in a couple different lengths for around $200. A cable alone is often over $100 so worth it to just start fresh I think!
They are separate items. The switch panel is currently unavailable, but was from Pontoon Stuff. Hopefully they will have more soon! The horn can be found at Pontoon Stuff as well, and can be wired into any momentary switch.
Thanks for the question! The Mercury part number would likely be: Remote Control 881170A15 but definitely double check that it’s compatible with your engine for the shift and throttle directions. A local Mercury Dealer could help too…or visit Vans Sport Center (www.vanssports.com) might have an affordable used one.
Hey Tom, quick question for you! I'm about to remodel my pontoon and want to swap out the existing helm for one of these Pontoon stuff helms, will my existing steering and throttle mount work okay with the new helm?
Great question! I haven’t found a steering system and shift/throttle control that won’t work with the Large Helm from PontoonStuff. Their “Standard” Console will take any steering system, but not every type of shift/throttle control mounted to the console. This is assuming your steering system is a rotary type (like shown in my videos). Feel free to email if you have more questions!
I’ve seen folks paint them, but I don’t believe Deckmate recommends it 100% unless you’re confident in the paint your using. They have a texture to them that may cause flaking over time.
This is the first video where I could see the difference between the two consoles. ❤

I've installed a couple of the glove boxes in the flat vertical spot under the main dash part. It's tight, but there's space!
Wish they had more flat spots on top for the big fish finders
That’s great input! I’ll pass it along to them. They recommend mounting bigger graphs on the left or right side, on the back side of where the stereo or switch panel goes.

For the steering bezel? They usually come with a 1" or 1.5" stainless #10 screw
