And you can see he even points out you have to use a vertical fist to strike and pull back since a tradition underturned fist will jab the tonfa into your stomach. Every nation has some stick-fighting tradition or the other. Quarter staff, Lathi, Bo etc. This is a different weapon which uses the straight punch with the Tonfa. However, the Tonfa loses out on the swing which standard stick-fighting arts provide.
Tonfas also give better blocking ability at close quarters. This is good for prison guards, since prisoners (usually) only have access to concealable weapons.
