    As they say, it's is all in the eye of the beholder. People see what they want to see based on what they know… or at least what they think they know.
    And like anything, people have different perceptions of Raph Derome. As a guy that prefers to keep a low profile living the life of a self-described introvert, it's sometimes difficult to express who he really is to those around him. That's why Raph lets his wakeboarding speak for him.
    With an endless drive and dedication to wakeboarding, Raph is truly in it for the love of the game. Never quite satisfied, riding to him is about the constant pursuit of progression and evolving his own unique vision of the sport.
    Two years in the making, Raph's latest video project is the product of a tireless effort to capture the soul of the sport and a visual declaration to the masses that there is much more to wakeboarding beyond contests. Presented by Red Bull Media House in partnership with Billabong and Malibu Boats, the journey takes Raph on a trip to some of his favorite spots including Florida, his home province of Quebec and a big-city shred at Toronto's Ontario Place.
    Check it out, it just might change your view.

    I showed this video to my father, the first man to ever ride a wakeboard in South America. It wasn't even called wakeboard, and I can't remember the name. The board was (is, still have it) shaped in a similar fashion to a surfboard, but way bigger and bulkier. And there were no boots, just straps. He told me how him and his friends didn't know how to even get on the board, so they had to lunch laying down like in a normal surfboard and when the boat was going fast enough, they would proceed to stand up and get the straps on. He brought the board from a friend in cali. He is in his 60's now, and when I show him all these videos he gets more amazed at the progression of the sport he fomented. I've got pictures of him riding that board on an old boat, and another picture of the first jump made with that board. And then there's me, a selfish fuck riding on a friend's mastercraft, trying to get another 180 to my 720's, trying to land the so fucking impossible double backflip, or adding a salad grab to my tantrum. I LOVE WAKEBOARDING. And seeing it progress this much gets me to my heart, as I feel that i'm part of the soul of it, and it's history runs through my veins.
    Love you pa, love you watersports. You will be the things that i'll miss the most if they get away from me

    I may be showing my age but former pro wakeboarder Eric Schmaltz predicted the future of wakeboarding would be a rail and kicker style park in an issue of Wakeboarding Magazine back in 95 or so. I remember telling my sponsor years ago in 97 that they should make a wakeboard that had a nose and tail that would allow you to do skateboard style tricks like 5-0's, etc.. on. He didn't understand and thought I was crazy.
    With that being said, rails and kickers are the future to promote the sport. The general public can never really differentiate between the complicated inverted tricks but you see some guy jump over a huge gap and you know it's difficult.

    • @hybby
      @hybby 9 років тому

      As someone who enjoys riding behind a boat (although not having done it for a number of years), I do hope that both stay readily available. I'm sure there will still be a lot of people who will enjoy going out on a nice butter calm lake, behind a powerful boat, wind rushing through your hair.. absolutely having a blast :)
      Both have their place. Rails and kickers (which I have yet to do) will popularize the spot; boating will likely stay popular (and awesome) :)

      blackhatch46 It's wake boarding. Of course they have to have a backstory, because otherwise nobody would give a fuck. Red bull has been making a valiant attempt at giving this sport a backbone, and the only way to do that, is to get people excited by the athletes. Think about it this way: When the public thinks about a sport, they bring up a face with it. Skateboarding = Tony Hawk, Snowboarding = Sean White, Hockey = Wayne Gretzky, etc. Even less popular sports like Lacrosse and Cricket have big names with stories behind them. What does wake boarding have? Millions of people laughing at the legitimacy of calling it a professional sport, that's what. Point being, it's easier to get people to be excited for a sport when they're rooting for someone as opposed to not rooting for anyone in particular. It's the difference between watching a Rodney Mullen highlight and a compilation video of no names doing the exact same tricks.

    If you aren't riding a wake then is it still wakeboarding?

    • @charbs14422
      @charbs14422 8 років тому

      +Cj Zeller well your still using a wakeboard, so in a sense you are still wakeboarding.

      it is called cable boarding in my books and it erks me when people call it wakeboarding because I don't see no wake at all at cable parks

    this video is very food directed, really cinematic.. i just don't like color correction, too flat and too desaturate.i'm a surfer so i don't know a lot about wakeboard tricks, but they're also amazing.

      Honestly I kinda like the way they color corrected this. It gives it a certain vibe idk, it's different than all these colorful crap dub step edits. Not saying colorful videos are bad. But I'm pretty sure they made the video look like this for a reason, and I dig it

      Quenton Millstid All 'freesports' come from bmx or surfing. Wake boarding is just an evolution of bored surfers experimenting.
