He agreed because they were busy. The aunt was so grateful to him for taking care of her that she left him the house in her will after she passed away, angering Mr. and Mrs. Pinkman, who tried to take the house away. Through most of this, he was in high school before he graduated and stayed in his house for a few years before the canon events unfolded.
