Mk1 Focus Door Handle Fix & How-To

- I had to address a broken door handle recently, so I tried to document the process in order to make this fix easier for anyone else!
The new piece was over $60usd, but I found an intact assembly at a pick 'n' pull junk yard: total cast of mine $11.
I drive a focus... so clearly: I don't own the music, just a big fan!

It was a pain in the ass project, but thanks to you I got her done. Nice relaxing music by the way.
I have to say thank you. I bought the correct part, inside piece of external door handle. This is the only video that gave me the nerve. I'm to the point of the door handle operates the latch now. I couldn't remember the long screw but you mentioned that it holds the "triangle" also. Thanks again. Really the other videos lead you up to a point and never address the real problem the little metal piece that breaks off.
Very helpful, thanks a lot man! This is the only video I'd found that addressed this problem directly.
That's why I did it!
I just pulled the part from the junk yard. If you want to get the white round piece off all you have to do is rotate it with a screwdriver. The oval slot its in will allow you to adjust the rod while pushing against one side of the plastic piece with a flathead. Push the rod into the top position and you will be able to turn the plastic retainer on the way down without breaking it.
heeey thatnks for this. the "spacer" on mine cracked in half and I didn't know what the whole piece looks like. I wasn't sure if it fit the whole oval shaped hole that the rod connects to. Fortunately for me I will be able to 3d print a new piece as I did with the 'finger' as you put it.
It actually fell to pieces as I was trying to get it out. I just ended up jury rigging it and now have a working door handle again:-) Thanks for the reply though:-) :-)
Big part missing is take the three torx screws out of the left side that hold the door latch once you remove that the whole assembly comes out and the rod and bushing is cake just a thought but the video was helpful
What is the part clled?. MK1 FOCUS DDOR HANDLE. Thanks
I have a similar repair to do on my Focus 2007. Here is a link to the issue I'm having. Can you help me find what this clip is or what it looks like?
the plastic shroud is an anti theft part, to keep slim jim away from rod and lock lever at the latch.
at 345 you install the longer thin torx screw in the top left side of internal assembly, what is "TRIANGLE" you mention?
The plastic shroud, supposedly protecting the latch and lock rods... is it really necessary? Was a pain to get out, and sure looks like it will be a pain to get back in, and hinder getting the rods reconnected. Just wondering what it really is protecting against. I'm thinking of leaving it out. (2003 Focus WAgon ZTW)
Well, I went ahead and put it all back together without the plastic shroud. Everything seems to work fine. Nothing is hindering the movement of the door latch rod or the lock rod. I'll try it and see how it goes.
4 seconds in you showed what broke...I have the same exact broken piece. But what part did it come from?
@ 9 seconds:
notice the spring around the green thing, now look to the right. Now look to the right of that perpendicular piece; the metal looks brighter all the way to the right... that's the "new" metal (newly exposed) where the finger broke off from.
Thank you for the video. I just did this today, that shield business is a pain in the ass.
A heads up for anyone doing this, the white plastic clip that holds the latch rod in (behind the shield) did not just pop out on mine. It broke. I believe the correct method would be to rotate it until the rod can slide out. I just yanked on it. I tried some super glue to repair it, we'll see how it holds up.
wish i woulda read this earlier.. hahaha!
I taped my rod up alot and shoved it in there..I test pulled a couple times seems ok
I tried showing that thing from a number of angles for that "twisty" reason.
Actuator rarely goes bad .what h e opens is the rod from the actuator to the key lock gets bent ,bend back straight.....problem solved I've worked on many focus doors and the actuator usually is just fine
at :59 it says, "When you yanked the bar out(green paint on it) that piece popped out of the ovular metal loop.. that white piece that fell out.. it broke into pieces because I 'yanked' it out.. which I assume was not the right way to do it.. this was an absolute headache to do and now I need that 'spacer' thing
I'm sure Ford probably has a specific tool or something for that, but you can use a long, flat screwdriver in the little grooves to turn it 1/4 turn. That quarter turn lines the rear tabs vertically so it'll come out of that ovular hole.
at 0:57 you show pinch tab to remove shroud. The pot metal bellcrank is not broken. And most important. the little white piece on the end of the rod from the lock cylinder to the latch probably needs to be rotated to remove rod from the latch. You pull it out as you said and the little white retainer will break. I know because it is late, it broke ,the auto parts store is closed and I can't finish tonight. Oh I bought my inner reinforcement online, new, for about 32 dollars with shipping. Thanks for the video.
Teaching yourself is the most fun part of the first go-round! Glad you got yours done.
That plastic piece IS indexed, thanks to all the folks chiming in about that needing a flat screwdriver to turn it BEFORE removing!
I picked up the replacement part on ebay for under $30. I ended up breaking the white spacer and replaced it for $3 at auto zone by purchasing a "dorman nylon nuts assorted assembly" kit. Placed the new spacer inside the permanent spot and gently knocked the metal bar in with a small hammer. Works great.
the part number can be found here www.focusfanatics.com/forum/general-technical-chat/270116-exterior-door-handle-problem.html

Ольга Степанова yes?
sorry, just a mistake)
If you lost or broke the little white retaining clip, where can you get a new one???
You find it yet?
Mine broke too. I used what is called "speed washers" or "speed nuts". They are in the trays of nuts/bolts at your hardware store (well, a GOOD hardware store, anyway.) Slipped one on the rod, then stuck the rod through the oval loop on the mounted latch. Then slipped a few more of the speed nuts onto the rod from behind (the back side of the oval loop.) There's some movement of the rod, but I applied pretty good force and could not pull the rod out of the loop. The main force on the rod and loop is vertical anyway, to open the door latch. I think this will work fine. Only time will tell.
I can't pull the bar out! Do I have to twist the little white spacer? This seems impossible.
Brittany Drost Yup! You have to be careful, but it DOES twist. Those divots in there are called "detents". Anytime a car part has those notches or a feel like it (the bumps you feel in an automatic's shifter) are called detents.
i know this video was done 2 years ago, but im having trouble opening the door from the outside after replacing the reinforcement part. Can anybody tell me what im doing wrong?? Everything seems to be in place after checking over and over
Omg!! I give up!!! The $50 at the shop will be worth it oppose to driving myself even more insane!!!!

very good video !!! but why dont you remove the whole door handle and power lock mechanism and repair it at the desk? :D then you dont have to have skills like a gynecologist :DDD
Very accurate nice vid but I have a 08 ford focus.
Thanks for sharing this. I got so frustrated trying to find out what part this assembly is -- so I could order it have have a shop install it -- that I decided the easiest thing would frankly just be to go down to a salvage and pull it out myself and re-install into my Ford Focus... thanks to your how-to video, that is.
Seemed easy enough, and I am NOT a DIY guy on cars. Seems this is a pretty common problem, so anyone else out there searching, you should give this a try. It's not "stupid simple" to do, but with some patience and perseverance it's totally doable.
BTW, here's an excellent vid on removing and re-installing the interior panel:

what a pain in the ASS. ford dealership wants $40 for the white retainer clip. free at junk yard.
You have no idea what you are doing.
You're a year or so late to tell me that! Thanks for the thumbs down!
