I understand Dean’s frustrations about thinking “oh Captain said this would be the last string,” but you’ve got to be flexible and understand those extra hours you put in while the fishing is hot will save you days going back out looking for cold crab.
I'd love to see Dean try that with Sig or Jon. It wouldn't fly with those captains. Don't try to roll over Jake just because he's younger. That man earned his Captain's chair.
He's complaining about working for 15 hours, but I've seen Sig and his crew work for 48 hours straight with very little down time. The crew had to literally carry Sig from the wheel house to his bed.
They know the job they signed up for and the captain has the right to tell you to keep working till they meet the quota and especially when they hit a hotspot
Yesss he was 1 of the 2 survivors plucked from the water hours after the boat sank! So scary. I wonder how Jake and And Dean feel about this situation now after that happened.
He had 20 minutes to get a quick coffee and sandwich. Thats all the break I get and its enough to keep you going. He is the Captain . If you are on crab keep going.🙏
@@timothykappel198 they had the ability to take a 20 minute break to eat/refuel. You can’t ever complain about being overworked in this job as they tell you from the get go what it entails
@reyganbriggs6785and you probably wouldn't get along with a captain on a boat for very long. Back talking the skipper is just not something that should ever happen, unless your in private and then be ready to get fired immediately. You respect the position of captain, the man calling himself captain has to earn it.
I’ve been in situations like this and yea it sucks when you think you are done and then there’s more but crying about it ain’t going to finish the job any quicker. You just gotta shut up and get it done.
Jake used to have the same attitude when he was a deckhand. The only difference is he learned his lesson well and better himself. He earned everything to become a Captain.
Dean’s antics aside, Jake is not a serious captain, boss, manager, or anything close to it. Half of his problems in the show can be boiled down to him not understanding how to manage people and trying to match them yell for yell.
Common sense would dictate when he said they would stop it's cuz he didn't expect to land on so much crab so the plan changed so they could get more crab and make more money
IDK about this one, I've never done commercial fishing before... but I was in the Navy & I know a lot about giving/taking Orders And you just don't order your crew to remove a guy off the deck... And then Threaten that guy with Maritime law when he doesn't get off "YOUR Wheelhouse" ...no sleep comes with the job but not letting your crew eat after 15 hours & then Ordering them to shove it after the first guy complains and then committing the Cardinal Sin of Leadership (Never order your crew to do something that you wouldn't be willing to do yourself...lead by example, from the front) ...that's what I get from this 8 minute clip of months at sea 🤷🤣
Imagine if soldiers said this to their captain. "We've been fighting 14 hours...om hingry, i wanna break". You know the rukes to crabbing. Big risk, hard work and big payday.
You'd be pretty stupid to have good full pots, and decide to stop to sleep. Crab tend to move about and by morning if you reset it might be too late they might be gone. I would think a "seasoned" hand would know that, and want to get as many crab onboard as quickly as possible. You'll get all the sleep you need when your dead son!
First off, I would love a break after all those conditions and working. If Cap. said to get ready to work again, I'd groan but I'd also ask if there's more money to make with the more work. Now given, Cap did say after they have 3 miles and roughly 20 min for some quick food. Soooo in the end... they did have time for a quick break lol.
I understand both sides, I do. However, as someone who's worked in a field where it can change on a dime? Leadership should never, and I mean *NEVER* , say "this last one and we're done". Especially when the entire crew heard that. You're just causing the majority of the boat to garner some resent. Especially so when you have grins and smirk at the toil the guys are going through. "I know I seen it from up here" smoking a cig with a smile is a hard no go in retaining moral. And those who want to know what I did? I wasn't on a boat. I was in the Infantry in the Army. I can't count how many times I, actually all of us, have heard "we're done after this" just to get smacked with "alright guys pipeline got shifted our way get a ditch we're out here all night now. Chow in the morning."
This is why you’ve probably never worked on a boat. I’ve worked on boats for 10 years, and unless you climb your way to the top, you’ll always be bottom of the totem pole and replaceable with any living person. You earn your position, it’s not just given on boats.
Asking people to be efficient in such dangerous conditions after 15 hours of working in it,is nothing short of selfish and reckless behaviour that could easily lead to a death
