"I'm not your teammate, I'm your captain".
Harsh, but it's the truth.
My great uncle was a fisherman. His captain told him something similar to that and never forgot it.
I understand Dean’s frustrations about thinking “oh Captain said this would be the last string,” but you’ve got to be flexible and understand those extra hours you put in while the fishing is hot will save you days going back out looking for cold crab.
I'd love to see Dean try that with Sig or Jon. It wouldn't fly with those captains. Don't try to roll over Jake just because he's younger. That man earned his Captain's chair.
How about Keith? He would eat Dean alive.
@@sonofmovienerdking7230 That was my thought. Keith would melt him with rage.
Better yet I would have loved seeing him act that way with wild bill
@@andrewcampbell3314 We've seen it. He seems to have at least one crewman like that each season.
@TheStcyril and it's epic when he flips out I admit
Dean almost died because of this decision. He ended up on the Scandies Rose when it sunk and almost died.
Yesss he was 1 of the 2 survivors plucked from the water hours after the boat sank! So scary. I wonder how Jake and And Dean feel about this situation now after that happened.
@@OGKrushy Even worse hes the last survivor of that boat. Sadly the other one died in a motorcycle crash i think.
@@sickmit3481rest in peace to him.
@@sickmit3481 yah that's right
Good. He nearly cost people their lives fighting on a deck
Sig taught Jake well. When the fishing is good, you take advantage and work.
here's a fact dean after he jake fired him in 2020 he was on the scandies rose when it sank and he was one of the 2 survivors
Yeesh! 😬
Holy crap- I thought his name was familiar
He seems like the type of guy that would sacrifice his mates to save himself unnecessarily.
He's the only survivor now. The other dude died in a motorcycle accident.
@@connorwhytock8406shit…really??
They know the job they signed up for and the captain has the right to tell you to keep working till they meet the quota and especially when they hit a hotspot
And all the guys on deck make bonuses according to how much they make! Jake is right when the Crab hit keep going until you can't unload it
I don’t know why the dudes crying . More crab you catch bigger your pay check will be.
@@ratboyiscoolthey don't get bonuses they get paid a percentage of the catch after expenses are deducted
@@timothykappel198 more or less the same thing. Incentive to work hard.
He had 20 minutes to get a quick coffee and sandwich. Thats all the break I get and its enough to keep you going. He is the Captain . If you are on crab keep going.🙏
He's complaining about working for 15 hours, but I've seen Sig and his crew work for 48 hours straight with very little down time. The crew had to literally carry Sig from the wheel house to his bed.
Healthy
More crab you catch the faster you go home.
That is true.
Exactly more is less. More crab means less time at see
The faster you go home, and the more money in your pocket when you get there.
There is a thing as being over worked though too and everyone has a certain point where it's not worth it anymore
@@timothykappel198 they had the ability to take a 20 minute break to eat/refuel. You can’t ever complain about being overworked in this job as they tell you from the get go what it entails
Why would you fight on the deck? Someone could fall overboard. Chill out. I know you are tired but it's not worth dying over.
He's lucking he did not get knocked out.Back in the 80s we took care of people like him.I work on the boats I respect the job and the captain
What kind of boats? Just curious as to what they used back then
@@ratboyiscoolthe same boats. The northwestern was built in the 70’s, saga 70’s, wizard 40’s, Cornelia Marie 89…
I'm the exact opposite. You don't get my respect for your position. You only get respect if you earn it.
@@natec599damn! The wizards from the 40’s and still goin?😂
@@reyganbriggs6785and you probably wouldn't get along with a captain on a boat for very long. Back talking the skipper is just not something that should ever happen, unless your in private and then be ready to get fired immediately.
You respect the position of captain, the man calling himself captain has to earn it.
There’s a fine line between taking care of your people and taking care of your business
Arr ya there to make money if Jake didn't do another string I'd be fkn livered..
Bro wanted a full continental breakfast
5:10 “Your a Cancer” I don’t know why that line makes me laugh 😆
I’ve been in situations like this and yea it sucks when you think you are done and then there’s more but crying about it ain’t going to finish the job any quicker. You just gotta shut up and get it done.
Get off the deck!....thrown overboard
Watching this show I loved watching Jake slowly turned into Sid as a captain 😂 just funny to see how much he took after his mentor
As the old saying goes you are a product of your environment, and Jake is no different.
Common sense would dictate when he said they would stop it's cuz he didn't expect to land on so much crab so the plan changed so they could get more crab and make more money
AND go home faster
More crab more money. Do the work you said you would do. Or stay home
Sig has ran his crew for over 30 hours before.
3:27 he describes the very essence of the job and complains about having to do it.
Before I die I’d like to just do one season on the Bering sea just to see what it’s like that and try and earn a decent amount of money
Never seen someone work so hard to not have a job.
Bruh just push through the painful few days and you’ll have thousands in the bank.
What episode was this
“TOSS HIM OVERBOARD!!!” That’s what I would’ve done
Ok then.
That crew didn’t wanna be there at all, green ol crew haha jake be better then the whole crew if he was on deck
Go down there and do something jake......🙄
You hired him !!!!
obviously a mistake
Jake ages in dog years. And he’s saltier than soy sauce. He needs to retire & relax in Hawaii
Dudes a bad captain
Any captain who has to remind his crew who the captain is isn’t doing his job right.
I understand both sides, I do. However, as someone who's worked in a field where it can change on a dime? Leadership should never, and I mean *NEVER* , say "this last one and we're done". Especially when the entire crew heard that. You're just causing the majority of the boat to garner some resent. Especially so when you have grins and smirk at the toil the guys are going through. "I know I seen it from up here" smoking a cig with a smile is a hard no go in retaining moral.
And those who want to know what I did? I wasn't on a boat. I was in the Infantry in the Army. I can't count how many times I, actually all of us, have heard "we're done after this" just to get smacked with "alright guys pipeline got shifted our way get a ditch we're out here all night now. Chow in the morning."
Asking people to be efficient in such dangerous conditions after 15 hours of working in it,is nothing short of selfish and reckless behaviour that could easily lead to a death
this is what happens when you work without a union contract most fishing boats are a modern sweatshop
This is why you’ve probably never worked on a boat. I’ve worked on boats for 10 years, and unless you climb your way to the top, you’ll always be bottom of the totem pole and replaceable with any living person. You earn your position, it’s not just given on boats.
@@damonrothfuss849 They made unions for your comment UNIONS
As it turns out it takes more than the ability to find crab to be a captain. Jake lacks any kind of leadership skills which I hate to say in his line of work is going to get someone killed.
Yes you have to make it known that you are in charge but he is actively escalating an already tense situation which is something else entirely.
Fake
Jake is such an infant sometimes
I understand why he wants to keep going, but this proves that jake is easily my most hated captain in the entire series. He's one of the people you couldnt pay me to work for because I would bet every paycheck I'll ever makethat we'd get into a fistfight within the first few days.
Because you don’t understand crab fishing? Why would you ever give an opportunity up to catch in a crab heavy area?
Okay Dean.
This dude a Dean supporter. XD
@@HemiSlant6828because he doesn't understand respect and the chain of command.
Captains get respect and have final say on a boat. That's the bottom line, everyone's life and paycheck are on his shoulders.
You're saying you hate Jake more than Elliot? Wow..... I'm questioning your judgment, there.
This is what happens when little men get a little bit of authority
That was all Jake’s fault he has a big mouth and big temper And he doesn’t know how to control either one
Nope. You're pathetic. That is a fact.
He's the captain. When he says work, the crew works. They're there to catch crab. If any of the crew doesnt want too, then Jake will find someone who will. Simple as that.
@@kirara2516people keep suggesting that these captains have dictatorial power but it's completely overblown in this show. It would be a major liability issue and in violation of a bazillion Labor laws and Maritime laws to not let you Crew gets sufficient sleep. You can't have it both ways, they say they prioritize safety above all else and then they act like anybody who says they need sleep is some childish green horn.
90% of this s*** is fake
@@kirara2516It's not as simple as that, it's way way more complicated because of stuff called labor laws and Maritime laws and liability insurance. Captains do not have the dictatorial powers this show suggests.
thats a dumbass move by the captain, he needs to keep morale up. why say theyre done then pull the rug from udner them? Rookie move
Jake just wants to get done get paid and go home but he needs to grow a sack and run his boat like a Real captain
