Great video! I love RDs. I still have my all original, pristine 74 rd60 I was given for Christmas in 1974, I was 10 yrs old. It's identical to the green bike you showed at the beginning. It has 2500 miles and I still put a mile on it every now and then. I would put your bike around 1977/78 going by the wheels. The rear winkers on your bike are off a h1,h2 or kz kawasaki. I rode my bike to get my motorcycle license in 1980. It suddenly got really small on the open road. Mine came with a 12 tooth sprocket. I put a 11 tooth on it for more torque off road then to a 13 tooth for the road. Lost allot of torque. Mine would run 50+ on level roads and could touch 60 on downhill grades. I love seeing videos on these little bikes!
Did a lot of 16 year old "tuning" on mine. Had the Micron (didn't have the end can like yours), RD200 downpipe (with some adjustment) and had the block transfer ports matched. Boyesen reeds, no head gasket (just Hermetite), bigger main jet, bellmouth. Bizzarrely, it ended up not as a screamer but as having more low end torque. Fitted 15 tooth front sprocket and 38 tooth rear. It would do 55mph any day of the week and occasionally 65mph if the conditions were good (cool crisp day). Downhill it would go off the clock if the descent was long enough.
Wow! I owned a 1983 Yamaha RX50 Special here in the USA. The bike was never sold by dealers, it was a raffle bike you could register to win. I think I was the third or fourth owner. It was a 5-speed two-stroke and would do about 55mph. Redlined at 10k RPM. I haven't seen your RD50 here in the states. I'm not completely sure Yamaha ever exported them to here. Nice bike!
Your Rd 50 is lovely, i had the TY50 , it had the pedals fitted , the reg was RME882R was knackered when i got it as a first bike and swapped it for an MB5 that needed an mot lol wish i had them both knowing what i know now ,
That was great .. I had one at 16 and purchased one last year as a long term project.. .. I'm not too. Fussed about all out std finish ..she will eventually be 12 v and Cdi .the 6 volt loom was so hacked I went day time. MOT for now
I think the rd 50 tank will sit a little more back and does not have the 'tag' at the back for securing it which the original rx100 has. I think if you are comfortable with welding you could make it fit
some did sell for nearer 12 but those days are well over. I think market for fresh restore is in the 9-10 range but the market is still softening. Note I got that price for my rd400f which was an old restoration several years ago
