      My roommate in college made these for Lunar New Year in a fit of homesickness with Banana leaves. We managed to find the rice after looking through half a dozen Asian food stores.
      The little Vietnamese lady at the store gave us a bunch of things for free because she was so happy to see people willing to buy from her. We're lucky enough to have been in a very multicultural area so getting business in that area is hard when you are one of 30 vendors selling the same thing. Happy New Year! (We celebrate Lunar New Year, also Asian but slightly different food customs.) The cleaning is universal in Asian countries. Cleaning with the red handkerchief over your hair and the whisk broom in hand is a time honored horror I mean, *tradition.*

    I am from Greece but my parents always loved Asian food so they took me to my very first Vietnamese restaurant when I was 6 years old. I was a very picky eater as a kid but I finished my food for the first time! I'll never forget those flavors!
    That was back in the '80s where Asian restaurants were almost non existent yet in Greece. But there was this Greek sailor who travelled to Vietnam, fell in love and married a Vietnamese woman. So he came back with her and opened the first Vietnamese restaurant in Greece. He's really really rich now...
    I am 41 now and still crazy about your cuisine, traditions, culture and everyday life. So thank you so much for educating us on your Country, please never stop!

      Amazing story, yes, Greece in the older days didn't had a lot of xeno people, maybe that's why they're not used to foreign things and some of them are afraid even to try something non Greek.
      I have yayas in my old neighbourhood in Greece where they don't want to try new things, old generation, but i think young Greeks today, most of them, are more open to international cuisine and new flavours.

    5:42 Sweet corn is just very fresh. The plant quickly turns the sugar into starch once it's harvested.
    That's why fresh sweet corn is so expensive.

    • @MithMathy
      @MithMathy Рік тому +1

      While that's true for sweet corn varieties, "sweet corn" is also a particular variety of corn. Other varieties include dent corn & flint corn, among others. Certain corn varieties are better for making corn meal or popping. You can eat them fresh but they won't be as sweet and juicy.
      Sweet corn varieties arise through natural mutations (genetic engineering not required) and certain ones grow better in different places.

      Hallo liebe Uyen,
      sei nicht traurig wegen der Lilien; es ist eigentlich ganz gut, dass sie kein Wasser hatten. Sie sind wunderschön im Garten, aber im Haus fangen sie oft so übertrieben an zu duften, dass man es kaum aushalten kann; das blieb Euch jetzt erspart, weil sie nicht ganz aufblühen konnten.

    Hi Uyen, I’m Indonesian but of Chinese descent so I relate a lot to your videos despite having lived in cities for my whole life. We have a similar sticky rice dumpling that we eat although I think it’s usually for the mid-autumn festival called “bakcang” and it usually has red beans and/or pork inside. I just came back to Canada after going back to Indonesia for 1.5 months for summer break and I already miss my friends, family, and the food in Indonesia so much, but watching your videos has brought me some comfort. Thank you for making these videos and I’m looking forward to more fun videos from you ^^

    Memories of three years ago when I visited Vietnam for Tet 2020. It's interesting to see how different Asian countries do New Year. My wife is Chinese and I've lived in the Northeast of China for 16 years. Neither of us had ever seen trees like these for new year in China but when we were in Hanoi everyone was selling these trees and people were transporting them all on the back of their mopeds. In the Northeast of China we make dumplings (jiaozi) for new year dinner - lots of dumplings.

      那是因为中国太大了,在广东,我们过春节时也会买这种桔树,在上面挂上一大堆红包,作为过年装饰。当然在我小时候,更常见是买水仙盆景摆在家里,大概是节后不那么难处理😂。
