I always admired the joke Eco makes that Simonini "is a racist-he hates everyone". Since Simon hates everyone-he does not perceive himself to be a bigot. He holds all of mankind in contempt. This is and always has been a tempting delusion of certain kinds of people to rationalize their sociopathy. The irrationality of reasoning like "I can't be a racist if I hate everyone equally".
Eco thinks the Protocols are a forgery - but all the same, I think he loves the esoteric. The meeting of a secret Jewish society in a Prague Cemetery is just a delicious conceit. But I suppose modern mythology like the old stuff, has its artistic merit.
