Matthew Fisher made a significant contribution to In Held ‘Twas In I and it was more than singing In The Autumn Of My Madness. His fingerprints are all all over the whole work.
My all time favorite and I listened to it a lot when I was at sea aboard the USS Midway in the early 1970s. I did come up with a clearer answer to the meaning of life as expressed to the pilgrim, The meaning of life for a bean plant is that it must have a good seed to fall in good soil, with water and light, it also must be lucky to find a vine on which to trail. I realized the meaning of life for humans is more like the bean stake. To improve the chances of the bean plant growing strong and bearing fruit it to place a stake for the plant to trail upward to the sun and not to flounder on the ground. So we too can stake the direction of our life. Each day a new day and a new opportunity.
Rarely heard. A masterpiece. I saw Procol with the Delaware Symphony back in 2010. They didn't play this....but it was the concert of my life (so far).
It's interesting to me that they play these songs so faithfully to the original recordings that were made in the 1960's... 50 years ago. I was a big fan, then and now.
Sat just a couple of rows back from whoever filmed this,Garry had some problems with his throat but that could not spoil this masterpiece, truly a magical moment, for me the highlight of another wonderful procol concert.PROCOL HARUM for me the finest band ever.
A magnificent epic. Always has been one of my favorites ever since a kid. Seems to take you on a journey across the universe. Has all the elements of a Beethoven classic. Storm, humor, crescendo, quiet, loud, recurring themes. BJ Wilson, Robin Trower, Matthew Fisher are well represented. Keith Reid. Very difficult song to sing for any mortal, let alone one who's been doing it for 50 years! Especially wonderful, the ending piano which is a tad difficult to follow on wax.
A timeless classic in the fullest meaning of the term, whose compositional excellence and emotional impact have never been topped. IMO, anyway. When listening to this, the hair on my neck never fails to rise and I can never keep the tears from rolling down my cheek. Few musical pieces have ever affected me that way - but this one does every time. 🙌🏻
I was just listening to SMPT's version ... After I could stand it no more, I came here to wash my ears out. Thank goodness Procol are still playing this!
It was there bloody fantastic so good of you to film the entire song good on you...must have been difficult. What a fabulous night. We travelled from Australia just to experience this, will never forget
@@messimusic1 , oh my God..... It's like a fairy-tale! How old is Gary Brooker in the video?? This is simply unbelievable! Oh how i love this Genius Artist, Singer, Pianist, Composer!! How many long hours i have spent enchanted by his music. It's autumn and i keep listening to a lot of Procol Harum. All this has led me here.... Never thought i would be lucky to at least see a VIDEO of this suite performed live. Thank you, Antonio. What a bliss..... What a wonderful gift of music for me a Procol Harum fan in Ukraine. Grazia!
Probably the first prog rock I bought. God bless him BJ, Robin Trower, Matthew Fisher and the others. Silly, overblown, but I'm sure Rick Wakeman would have bowed.
"In held twas I" Try that one on 300 mg' of LSD. It will shred your false illusions, leave you stripped bare. If you survive that, your life will become illuminated. Deep respect for Keith Reed who wrote lyrics, Brooker who interpreted them and the members of that band of musicians who brought it all to life.
I did exactly that with some blue microdot in 1971 (too much). This is the best ever album. I survived my 1971 experience just but it was life changing. Then I was at this Palladium concert in 2018 and I have to say it was great despite Gary's sore throat.
Similarly, I wish the bass player would have sang 'In the Autumn of My Madness' here, esp. since Gary struggles with it. It needs that second voice, and the bass player sounded close enough to Matthew Fisher.
I can tell that Gary was also struggling to play and sing at the same time. Sadly, we are all aging and will be a shadow of what we once were. Still - great music though!
Only the greatest piece of music ever written. Brings me to tears every time I hear it.
Same thing here. A true masterpiece
Gary Brooker was one of the most underappreciated giants of music around. This piece also almost brings me to tears. I wish I could have been there.

Goodness gracious even the live version is so fantastic!!
The Ultimate (and literal) concert pianist. I could listen to him play for hours... and have. RIP Commander.
This was a life changing song for me The musicianship and the philosophy in the lyrics.
Looking and sounding like a memorial song so many years ago; R.I.P. Gary !

Absolutely breathtaking!
Thank You Antonio We who couldn't be at the concert are very grateful!

Eternal masterpiece

Try Yes ‘Awaken’ from Going for the One album
I’d say listen to Transatlantic. First 3 albums. Might be right up your alley. 🍻
You may enjoy ‘Harvest Of Souls’ by IQ. It’s of a structure similar to this.
Brilliant evening and this masterpiece was a highlight.
Thank you very much!!!
Superb

Absolutely Amazing! A religious experience.
Thank you for posting, Antonio... One of the epic Prog masterpieces !
..and I believe one of the earliest..I was transfix and inundated with Joy, absolutely love this piece
I agree absolutely , the last 5 minutes are one of the masterpieces of classic rock ever made . THANKS!!
Indeed, amazing, an exceptional reference work, unsurpassed.
Brings back good memories from the beautiful concert at London Palladium - thanks for posting.
I discovered this song with Transatlantic. Now i love the original too

@@vano758 He was 73 that day, and his voice a bit raspy than other days(cold) ....very emotional unforgettable night.!
Muchas gracias! Excelente! Sin palabras.
MERCI POUR CES IMAGES ,....tellement magnifique !!....
Being where Gary Brooker was in the time line of his life, makes the words of this performance that much more poignant and relevant.
Likely the last time this will be played live sadly; but fingers crossed GB can dust it off once more!
"Save my last departing 'birds' "
ok, GARY , merci pour tout !....
Chilling memories!
amazing
In my opinion, the very best rock suite. And there are few fantastic ones. I think Edmonton version is the best....
chef d'oeuvre immortel !.....oui !!
REST IN PEACE COMMANDER BROOKER
To be there! Ohhh!!! 😂💎
EPIC
Probably the first prog rock I bought. God bless him BJ, Robin Trower, Matthew Fisher and the others. Silly, overblown, but I'm sure Rick Wakeman would have bowed.
I wonder how long the Dalai Lama has been Welsh? Just makes the whole thing even better (a Welsh fan!)

Did that.
you mean mcg's. Micrograms.
It might kill you too. The emotion is strong enough with some good speakers.

Going through a Marantz 2270 into a pair of Koss Pro 4/AA Headphones. Finest Days ever been strange despise.
Put the music on. Sit behind the Hammond and play along as loud as you can...
Kids----they just don't make 'em like that anymore...
Are there any really high quality recordings of this performance? No other musical composition can touch this.
RIP Gary Brooker
Second part of the text is not read by Gary. It should have been said by Keith. Well done by the bass player.
Similarly, I wish the bass player would have sang 'In the Autumn of My Madness' here, esp. since Gary struggles with it. It needs that second voice, and the bass player sounded close enough to Matthew Fisher.
Brilliant. Gary's voice is struggling a bit these days though.
