...I lived in Fort Lee from shortly after my birth in 1949 until July 1961 when we moved to Wayne, NJ...dad was born there in 1918 and watched being built as a boy...until a few years ago I had one if the commemorative 'packets' that was issued on the day it was dedicated...I could see the bridge during the winter (when the trees were bare) from my living room windows on Linwood Ave....dad's shop was on Hudson St and you could see the topds of the towers from the side door...I'm 72 now and living in Florida...these are great memories of my yout' growing up in Fort Lee...
Huge massive respect to all the good engineers and builders all around the world past present & future... Massive work & most important safe to walk on w trucks cars on multiple lines
Eighty five years later, and they could build another bridge right along side, and another Cross Bronx Expressway. That's how much traffic is crossing, constant, bumper-to-bumper.
Walked across it for the first time today, quite a thing! I have to say though, it is in an alarming state of disrepair. At one section there were holes in the pedestrian walkway. Rust galore of course. I wish they would make it beautiful again. Grind, paint, repeat.
So the GW bridge opened in 1931, so why did they show a clip of FDR as "President" when he wasn't the President until 1933? Mistake, or intentionally misleading?
I think the granite cladding idea was courtesy of the Tammany Hall folks who wanted their buddies in on the quarrying work and damn the extra cost. But no.
put the cap on the CBE ! use new land from cap project to build affordable housing. put a cap on RR track, park ave line - bronx, 132 st -190 st. use land for affordable housing. build on the long island sound " A florida keys style overseas highway " . this will relieve the CBE
Hmm... got to wonder if they did end up enclosing the steel in concrete... there was no wind tunnel testing at the time... who knows what the winds could have done to it.

They left out the part where they weren't supposed to collect any tolls after it was paid for.
That is False. The Bridge was designed to have tolls permanently.

It was always windy on the bridge. When I was a kid, we would walk to the NJ/NY border to cool off.
The most important part is the invention of E Z Pass so the PA can build giant catsup bottle buildings and $4 billion subway stations.
Whoa!
My Great Grandfather worked on that bridge as a mason. Pretty cool seeing this footage.
Thank you for making my channel possible!
I walked across this bridge twice!
Actual Engineer of design was Allston Dana. Ammann was Chief Engineer.

Gothic Bridge Style !? ☹️😰😨😧😦😮😯😶😤😉🧐
Not really gothic, it was supposed to have a 1920’s design flare to it. Gothic architecture was way before then
they are emojis. Deal with it!

Sections of the main cable are encased in concrete today.
