600 Thousand Ton of technology: Prelude FLNG

  • Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
  • Prelude FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas) is a floating platform for the extraction and production of liquefied natural gas. In fact, it is a full-fledged LNG plant housed on a ship. Its length is 488 meters, width is 74 meters, height is 105 meters, and its displacement reaches 600 thousand tons. The Prelude one is of the largest floating structures in human history, making even giant tankers, cruise ships and aircraft carriers seem small by comparison.
The ship was built by the Samsung / Technip consortium for Royal Dutch Shell and is currently operating at the eponymous Prelude field off the coast of Australia.
    Thanks for watching!

Still not in operation AFAIK. A shore based LNG plant at James Price Point as originally planned would be up and running and returning a profit to shareholders by now. ( Yes, I am posting from Western Australia, where the state government definotely preferred the onshore processing).

The birthing pains of nascent technology. The _Prelude_ may prove trouble-laden but, the next generation of ships will be constructed having learned lessons therefrom. As a first son in my large family, I can attest that perfecting the formation of an adapted product (evolution) takes time, trial, and failure. Our family's youngest is a veritable financial wizard; a faithful and contemplative Catholic with a rigid code of ethics and principles; and a 6'4" monster of a body builder but, he wouldn't have been possible were it not for me.

Yes it's a great feat of engineering,in reality it's a complete mess.I spent 18 months on the hookup of the Ichthys explorer offshore platform also built in Korea,on the instrumentation we replaced much of the substandard tubing which would have been very hazardous if not rectified.I had workmates on the Prelude with similar stories of poor workmanship. This is well known in the oil and gas industries, build them in Asia quickly and relatively cheaply ship them here then spend 10s of millions to get them to the standard to operate safely. On onshore facilities are every bit as bad.Just an aside rig workers are paid well they work 12 hour shifts 84hours a week, normally 2weeks on/off some times 3 not a great lifestyle.

The process you show at 2:10 is a GTL process use to convert gas to liquids at a molecular level, and it is not the one used on this vessel. Prelude converts gas to a liquid via change of state caused by cooling it with refrigeration. You have made a nice video, but it is factually incorrect from a technology standpoint.

It's hardly a new idea, the use of FPSO's in the Oil industry (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) has been around for decades. Most were not bespoke vessels, rather old Oil Tankers that were adapted for the job. They would sit on a well head and process the crude, then store it for collection by a fleet of tankers and this still happens.
It seems totally sensible that the Gas production industry goes the same way, although more equipment is required for the liquification of the gas. This equipment is also required for the transportation of the gas in LNG carriers as the liquid gas if not stored below it's boiling point, will become a gas again and upset the storage arrangements of the carrier.
It is obviously only financially viable for use in some of the more out of the way gas fields such as this one off the NW coast of OZ.
Here in the UK we are lucky and have enormous natural gas reserves in the North sea oil fields so shore based processing facilities are a viable option. Indeed Shell operate one on the coast of Norfolk.

Natural gas is used for more than just energy production, and even if it wasn't, we can't just stop using it. Not enough people are interested in wind/solar yet for it to completely replace things like coal and natural gas. We're still drilling for it because it isn't realistic yet to stop.
