This type of “What makes this song great” is my favorite. I don’t listen to Seal. I don’t like pop music until Rick Beato gives me a reason to. This is so good. I’ve heard this song a billion times and I never actually listened to it until Rick showed me something in it that I never heard before. This is why I love you Rick Beato. Tell me why Soundgarden is great. Tell me why Pink Floyd is great. I already know why they’re great. Tell me why Seal is great? My minds blown.
A million times I agree 100% !
No fucking way you got Seal!!! Holy hell! I love this song, I love his talent, I’m blown away that he is on this vid!!! Keep killing it Mr. Beato, I love what you do.
Such a beautiful song
The best ones are the secret ones
If you weren’t listening to seal or sade in the 90s then you weren’t getting laid.
I think Rick's secret mission is to shame contemporary songwriters into writing more interesting music.
I like contemporary music on the radio, and at the same time, there's not the adventurousness of the 70s the 90s. I like music that surprises me and that has to grow on me a while.
It probably wouldn't sell well. They make bland music because there's a demand for it. If there wasn't then bland music wouldn't be so high in the charts. What he's actually doing is shaming the one's who enjoy that kind of music and trying to get you to appreciate his kind of music
@@andrewgodly5739 the thing about music is that you never know. Even though it might seem as you say, you never know when an incredible musical genius comes along and changes the trends. That's the beauty of music.
Secret?
I hope it works.
Rick: "I'm gonna call Seal and ask him."
Me: 😳😮😲
I almost fainted!!!
Loved this! My jaw dropped.
Is that what you call a drop the mic moment or what?!!!
Agree. Went from, "Yeah, sure you are" to WTH?!

As a women, I have often tried to imagine what it feels like for a man to fall deeply in love, I think this song describes it without explaining it.
I can attest. We're usually troglodytes but, under the spell of a good woman, we can channel our most sensitive poet.
I actually think men fall in love with women, when they fall, in a very different way. But it's like every cell in our body is spinning and falling in love. I've experienced it, and although I'm an atheist, it was like being touched by the divine.
@@danellis-jones1591 that's GOD

And Seal fucking picks up. 🤯
Rick knows everyone. It's ridiculous!
Savage!!!
I mean If this isn’t true big dick energy, I don’t know what is. My man Rick is a legend!
Casual flex... 😅
You interviewed him and didn't interrupt him, that's like a miracle this days
Rick is cool!
That’s the biggest thing I’ve noticed about Rick in every video he does with other people. He never interrupts. Even when it’s his guitar players or drummers, etc that are helping him in videos, he never ever interrupts. I love that about him (and could learn from him!)
Which is one of the most impressive things about his interviews. He doesn't impose an opinion on the people he's speaking to. Amazing.
Like a true musician, he wants to hear what they can offer and what they hear. Collaboration at it's finest.
It is so hard to figure out which is more awesome: this song by Seal, Seal's sublime vocal talent, or Rick's passion for helping us understand why we have always loved this song, but just could not explain it!
Everything has a reason, so to speak. The explanation is as great as the music.
or Seal's humility!
I feel so isolated learning all this technical stuff. I know two people who are interested in this kind of stuff, and one of them has politics that potentially make him an enemy in the future, so I keep distance. I hate politicians. I hate this divide and conquer stuff. I hate musical illiteracy. I hate illiteracy in general. I guess at least I love music.

It just sucks that I can't really share the full beauty of music, because no one really cares. I could probably play Wonderwall on piano and 99.8% of the population would applaud it. But, if I play something more technical that I made, that isn't recognizable, no one cares. It's just background noise to them.
God. This is obviously one of the greatest songs of the modern day, and even as someone who just adores this song, I honestly had no clue just how much was really going on in this song. Your expertise and your ability to parse the sounds and explain what we're hearing and why it's special is about as masterful as the song itself is. Even as someone who's heard this song probably thousands of times over the decades, your breakdown is still extremely eye-opening. This has given me a renewed appreciation for the engineering side of music.
Agreed. I’m in awe.
I felt the same! Plus the different elements and vocals and harmonies, specially the different instruments that were into the song, I never in my entire life would have thought that there was a heart beat and those strings and the way they were meshed into to create this song. I’m totally wowed! If I loved the song now I love it even more
So basically Seal made this master piece because no one told him he "couldn't" do this or that... This is freaking powerful... And I love this song even more now!
Jon Anderson said something similar. He'd play some random set of notes on his guitar and Howe would tell him "that isn't a chord" and Anderson's reply was: "I seem to be playing it though."
I love your name.
Not knowing it was impossible he went there and did it
Seal is a grammy award winning artist and I still think he's underrated.
Dude he was married to Heidi Klum..He has achieved everything in life 😄
While those singing celebrities (i.e., NOT artists) are so overrated.
Who underrated him? I think he’s simply not appreciated enough by people who think a drum loop and an angry rhyme connotes talent. The insult to any musician by the many auto tuned records is a disgrace. Humanity in music contains a rich beauty.
@@Abhijith_Menon that’s your interpretation of his life’s achievements? Are you like 13?
@@coldhardtruth333 why are you arguing with a 13 yr old?..are you like 8?
The fact that Seal claims that this song "just kind of happened" in the space of two-three hours in an afternoon, and that it draws on so many patterns from classical music just speaks volumes of his musical intellect. What a song and what a musician! I mean just listen to 12.40-12.47. Amazing!!
12:40 to 12:47
Most great artists are like that. They will go somewhere, get inspired and BOOM, a great work of art is created for the ages!
We definitely also have to thank his producer, Trevor Horn, seeing that Seal initially discarded his idea until Trevor saw its potential.
And he said he didn't play any instruments at that time. That's like insane.
I literally read this just as he was saying it. It took me a second to realise what was going on!
It's a beautiful song. Timeless quality. It has a touch of English Folk music.
Yes! I kept thinking it sounds "fairytale" or "storybook" somehow :)
Seal - what a humble soul. "I was just trying to figure out my new Tascam..."
This series is the best thing on UA-cam. No question. Also, I want a shirt that says “I’m gonna call Seal and ask him”.

I'm after a series "Better Call SEAL"
I walked down the aisle on my wedding day to this song. Seal's discription of youth and then saying "what it means to you" is exactly why we chose it. Yet it seemed sophistication and "Adult" coming of age, souls reconnecting and growing up. Now 26 years of marriage later, I'm so glad we picked this song. It really is timeless and deserves all it is. Thank you Seal and Rick for reconnecting to memories that feed the soul.
How sweet.
Wow what a magical moment, the gift that keeps giving!
Without SEAL we are nothing 😔
I love baroque, and Renaissance music and this song resonates to me. When I first heard Seal singing it, I became very emotional. The beauty of this song was incredible. I have to say I shed a tear, listening to it. I'm not a professional pianist but I went to my keyboard to pick out the song by ear. Now I can play it. I never tire of this song. Thank you Seal for having such a beautiful song in mind. And congratulations on your Grammy award.
Rick: "I'm gonna call Seal and ask him."
WHY NOT?
pfftt... big deal, I do that all the time. Just last week I was unsure about the second verse of "Crazy" so I dialed him up. I now know the *real* lyrics are:
"Who is this? I don't know you.
How did you even get my number?
Please stop calling me or I will
have to inform the police."
I know it doesn't sound like that on the album, but I have it from the man himself, those ARE the lyrics.
He was so casual about it lol
Thank you Rick for breaking it down. I have always loved that song. It literally brought me to tears.
@@alandmoore4306 that was hilarious! Good job
Ultimate Beato Flex: Let's just facetime the artist and ask them.
I for one never realized JUST HOW COMPLEX this song really is!😮😮😮😮 I truly see why it got song of the year
So what you're telling me is that Seal is a musical genius and created perfection in a couple of hours without trying hard.
Rick: "The modal interchange between Gmaj and Gmin tonic is incredible"
Seal: "Dude, I couldnt even play an instrument and did it in an afternoon."
When you've got it, you've got it.
@@JeffManseau and apparently (judging from the phone call) Seal has perfect pitch, along with ALL the talent.

Seal is a pretty good guitar player.
It's kind of similar to a Picardy cadence
*THIS WAS POP MUSIC* .....that hit hard.
Now you see the dumbing down!
Sad but true, this WAS pop music...
Today BTS is considered good music by z generation… 🤮
Seal kind of came out of nowhere though. Stop saying that pop isn't good anymore. Listen to Chai for example. Interesting and complex buildups in essentially punky songs like She Is Kitty or Boys Seco Men.
@@theothertonydutch Not thesame at ALL. That you think Chai is melodic ... well...
I think this song is great because of how generous it is. Incredible melodies, harmonies, instruments, dynamics. While not every song needs to be this rich, in fact other songs can be overproduced, it's how much the artist is in service of the song and to the souls it would touch that counts.
That's the genius of Trevor Horn. The only producer I know who can make rich bombast sound subtle and sparse.
He tapped into that undefined realm of music magic and came back with this gem.
Nobody ever analyzes Seal's music, and I've always thought this song was a compositional masterpiece. Kudos, Rick, for unpacking this!
There's a lot of Trevor Horn in this too. He seems to be a very hands on producer, would be great to see his mark on songs. (Imagine two tribes without Trevor Horn!)
Great song for headphones
As was the song "Prayer for the Dying." The groove when that song drops in wi9th the bass and drums joining just drives!
The entire album is amazing. In my opinion it's the best album of the 90s
Yup, I’m no musician and can’t sing either but Rick Beato has opened up a whole new dimension of art for me. I was in tears a few times as Rick went through the highlight and when Seal thanked him for focusing on his song. Wow!
"I'm going to call Seal!"
Man, that would be amazing.
*Actually calls Seal*
This is amazing!!!
Blew my mind!
THANK YOU!! I've been screaming for years, this is one of the greatest songs of our generation. The balls to just open a chorus belting out, "BABAAAAY!" And then everything else, obviously. Fuck, that's good.
"I didn't know I couldn't do that." 🤣
Seal was born to think outside the box. Loving it.
It is seriously unbelievable that Rick is providing this level of music education at people's fingertips. You can learn more in one of Rick's videos than three years of study in the past.
I have no musical ability, I just love listening to it. I love getting this analysis from Rick. He explains WHY the music is so great, and that makes all the difference!
Rick is the reason I picked up bass and guitar again after like 5 years of not having played. Not even his incredible wealth of knowledge, but, his passion for music. Seeing him get as excited as he does about things reinvigorated myself, and I'm sure thousands of others who follow him now. We don't deserve him lol
“I wonder how he came up with this idea… hang on, lemme go call Seal.”
That is some exceptional credibility Rick has built up over these past several years on UA-cam (not to mention prior to UA-cam) to be able to pull that out of the back pocket. Very cool!
Y'know, like you do. Just call Seal. Sure! Like you do...

He can
Nobody flexes like Rick. I'm totally okay with it, though.
A man named Arin Hanson tried to do that once but it went very differently...
@@bernhardjordan9200 I was gonna get mad at this comment for a sec.
But you are so correct.
I believe this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. The guided tour Rick provides (with the individual tracks, what a gift to have) shows how much these creative works rely on being a team effort. Every role, whether in arranging, or writing, or performing, contributes to the end result. The right people at the right time with the right effort and the right material produce magic. Congrats and everyone's gratitude go to Seal, without whom there would be no song.
It was said early on that he disliked performing this song, thinking it wasn't very good. I think he's grown to appreciate its importance to the general public as well as to he himself as a creative artist. For whom this song opened doors.
I instantly loved this song the first time I heard it when it came out and even played it as my children’s “wake up alarm” when they were small. As a lifelong musician (keyboards) who loves the integrity and intricacy of music, I applaud everything you do to help millions appreciate music.
Beautifully said. I'm a musician, too, but a singer and guitarist. Playing this on the guitar required much faking, but where I was singing people kept asking me to sing it. So, necessity is the mother of invention. I faked it and used my ears. End of story. I still love the song and listen to it at least once a month with my wife, also a musician, a cellist.
Be safe, well, and happy!
Seal isn't talked about enough in my opinion. Amazing voice, great songs!
Agreed. His first two albums are awesome.
And Trevor Horn doesn’t get talked about nearly enough.
When Seal broke off from his musical partner (Trevor Horn) I think he lost some of the unique musical complexity of those early records. He's still a great artist; that as you say, doesn't get the props he deserves.
Agreed!, also live he's freaking amazing.
His live shows are amazing. Saw him last at Chastain Park. Great show.
"It felt like the right thing to do," is the most artistic statement ever.
Yup, Seal tuning into himself as an instrument with a heart and a brain. Classic artist in action!
The difference between art and science. ❤
That is what is missing from so much music today. Straying from formula and just doing what feels right.
Which is almost exactly what Paul Atreides said about putting on the stillsuit correctly in Dune....
It's a beautiful song., arranged and sung impeccably well. Ed Sheeran hasn't written anything as good as this. Why Seal isn't a huge artist is beyond me. Who today writes this type of complex, sophisticated music? It's still as captivating today as it was when it was released. Pure class.
He just didn't have hits... He had great songs but sometimes it's not enough!
John Mayer. Not even joking.
Patrick Droney, Conrad Sewell, Tom Odell are a few that come to mind. I listen to them all the time. Their music has meaning and beauty.
Agreed
Seal was extremely huge when this song dropped. For years.
Now I understand why it's so important to support this channel. Other creators may have produced a similar song breakdown video, but Rick got the stems, the access to Seal, and actually takes us through each verse, bridge, chorus, etc., isolates each track and gets to the bottom of what makes the song great. So, maybe now I'll consider the "Beato Bundle."
Huge respect for Seal on his humility and openness with us all! A real artist, right there.
Two ways you know you made it as an artist.
1) Rick Beato does an analysis of your song.
2) Weird Al does a parody of your song.
3) You are interviewed by Nardwuar
Facts!!
4) Dan Harmon works the song into an episode of ‘Community’.
I laughed so hard on this! 😂😂😂
Now I understand why I like so much this song. The Seal voice plus all the orchestration and additional layers with all those details make this song perfect.
The vocal jumps remind me of how one might play a guitar or woodwind instrument, strumming the string and then lifting your finger to immediately transition from a high note to a lower note. Being able to transition between those notes with that speed and smoothness definitely highlights Seal's vocal talent.
Some of the best things ever created came from “I didn’t really know people don’t normally do that,” creatives. 😂
I had to leave art school precisely because of this. It can't be taught but it can be taught out of the artist.
Reminds me of Bowie describing how he and Eno would take the manual for a new keyboard or studio toy and promptly toss it out and just learn how to make the quirks and farts they wanted it to.
@@lovesilk1 The idea is that you learn the rules like a "pro" would use (maybe to create commissioned art that they're getting paid for but isn't necessarily from the heart), so you know how to break them like an artist. But if you're already at that artist phase, more power to you!

This is one of my most favorite songs. I could listen to it all day. I feel transported into an ethereal realm where I wish I could stay. I am so grateful for your analysis as you have made me love it even more. I'm a amateur musician and I used to be a professional dancer. How did I never realize this was in 3/4 time?!🤔 shame.

Rick I have a brain hearing condition that makes it impossible for me to pick out all the intricacies of music which means I might hear vocals but miss instrumentals or I would get the lyrics wrong. These videos have opened a whole new world of music to my ears. TY so much.
That’s awesome.
I too have trouble discerning various parts and instruments within songs. I love how Rick separates them to be better recognized and later enjoyed within the song as a whole.
Musicians like Rick are getting more and more rare to find outside of classical or jazz musicians. I believe we are at the cusp of a great era in music though. Tough times breed beautiful art. I am classically trained, but Rick helps me to understand pop music better than anybody.
I don't think it is a brain condition. I was literally taught by someone at a young age to do 'active' listen instead of passive listening and learn to isolate instruments in a track. If you re able to isolate them in your mind, your mind magically teaches you to have a high resolution understanding of how the instruments harmonize together in a track.
I reckon this would make Rick's year!
This was pop music....
Theres is so much going on on this song, a world of sensations, colors, feelings, different dephts and so much energy on different layers and intensity.... This is a one man composition, with a good production....
We need to reconect with this kind of energy, power and sensibility....
This was born from inside....

I was a full blown metal metalhead when this came out, and I would listen to it on the radio every time I could. Masterpieces are masterpieces, regardless of genre.
I love Rick's enthusiasm for this, I'm just as excited. This IS the stuff that is missing in today's music. It''s brilliant on every level, melody harmony, vocals, performance, composition, a perfect marriage of accessibility and complexity.. The crime is that we're being robbed of this sort of beauty and forced fed mindless crap instead.

As a musician - YES, I love covering this song for all the reasons Rick mentioned. It is an underrated masterpiece. I love this song so much that I even sent it on my wife's voicemail years ago, long before she became my wife. Needless to say... 😄💖
And my interpretation of the title line is "Kiss from a rose on the grave." That's because I envision the singer is mourning the loss of his love and placing a rose on her grave.

I love when song writers say, "I was too ignorant to know I wasn't supposed to do that." And they've come up with something brilliant.
Absolutely! This is testament to blissful naivety that actually changes things. Like James Cameron saying how he and the team were too naïve to realise that making The Terminator was an impossible dream and they made something brilliant and changed the movie industry.
that's how I taught myself to play bass, guitar and drums lol!
@@udsmall7306 I’m in the same boat! All of my friends stopped playing their instruments, so I had to pick up different instruments to continue recording. Learning drums, now. Definitely a challenge.

Indeed. It happened to me too, this jazz guy friend of mine told me there was a wrong note on the melody, but when he corrected it he killed the song. Years later I got to know that that is called "Appoggiatura italiana". That "wrong" note is what creates the tension which once it gets released makes the song emotional impact explode. That technique is the basis of Adele's productions (that's how I got to know it). Without you kill her work.
I have always liked this song. It feels like mystery, romance, and hope all rolled into one. Is it just me or do these chords sound like great jazz. The timing of his vocals feel that way too. ❤
I used to play the song over and over. this is clearly one of my favourite song ever, as if it is a gift from God.
The entire composition is definitely a masterpiece, but i think the strings gave soul to this song. The break at the end part always give me chill, especially from the strings. God ,I love this song so much. Thank you rick for creating this episode.
Trevor Horn is a God level producer. That first Seal album is PERFECT

AMEN!! My no. 1 album of all time.
Oh yes the first album - Crazy, Killer and Whirlpool - just fantastic and production that is so exciting!
Deep Water and Crazy are my faves, but the whole album is amazing!
Took me a while to find this comment. Trevor’s work here is as brilliant as Seal’s creative Tascam noodling.
"I'm just gonna call Seal and ask him a few questions." 😆
Let's just appreciate the fact that these are unprocessed real vocals. Incredible dynamics, emotion and perfectly in tune without auto tune.
And even though Seal is the star of the song it's easy to check that the rest of the musicians are top notch.
Well... I wouldn't say "perfectly in tune". It's fairly pitchy actually... but that's part of its charm, and makes it better!
Without auto tune ?
@@faybrockhoff4187 auto tune didn't exist back then.
@@barefootalien Exactly ... "perfection" is BORING ... and sounds artificial AND dissonances can work in combination with other sounds that keep the harmony.
In the "Bohemian Rhapsody" video Rick and Brian talked about the many tracks of vocals ... and mentioned that "perfectly synchronising them is making it sound FLAT".
@@barefootalien It actually addresses a very serious mixing problem in a dense mix- a male mellow voice can get lost easily if pitched perfectly, while these imperfections really help the vocals cut through the mix. Back in the day the opera singers of all sexes started to use vibrato for the same reason ;)

This might be the greatest song ever written, composed and sang. Definitely in my top 10.
Met him in 2000 while I was managing the Man Of The Year awards at Radio City Music Hall. Actually stood in the wings as he sang this. There is not a moment that will ever compare. This song brings me to tears, always.
I'm cleaning house listening to this song breakdown of it seriously making me cry so beautiful. There arent many songs that have had that affect on me
Well I'm jealous. :)
Seal just slayed us all saying “yeah I wrote that in about 2 hours”.
This song has a special meaning to me. It was one of the most painful periods of my life. It helped me get through. Music is therapeutic.
In Europe we were introduced to Seal by his collaboration with the electronic artist Adamski and ther single "Killer" in 1990. Already then one could tell he was a very special artist.
I love how medieval-sounding this song is. Very catchy.
Everything seemed medievally inspired from the 90s to 05, the music, the movies like Troy, LOTR,gladiator , and then games like age of empire ahhh good times
Seal is a very underappreciated artist
Gheia sou re Angele. Thank you for avoiding the UA-cam money word ‘underrated’. I’m off to actually pay to download his stuff. Never would have if Rick here hadn’t reminded me of this stuff.
What? Nonsense... why did he sell millions of his songs?
I totally agree with you !!! Don't hear anyone !! You are the best!!!
By you millennial ass maybe, take a trip back to the 90's. He was very much appreciated. Nowday's every older song has a over-sentimental "unapreciated" comment stuck to it. Like an old piece of gum to a shoe. Fuck off, it's getting lamer than claiming first on a ytube video.
I always knew I liked the song but now I understand it's acrually a masterpiece
This song gave me goosebumps from day one. You can feel the passion. Plus I love historical music, so I was sold on the first notes. This is a song you feel. And you explained why beautifully. Heartbeat. And that’s why we listen over and over
Man... From time to time I've lost my faith in music. It was a time like this in the early 90's, I couldn't listen to new music, nothing give me goosebumps like the old songs. I was starting a career as a producer and sound engineer in studio.
Then one day at the local tv news (I'm from Brasil) they said it was the debut of a song that will be in the next Batman movie, and they rolled a clip of scenes from the movie with Kiss From a Rose... Man... I can't describe what I felt, it was like some religious experience. I've listened to the whole song as nothing else was hapenning around me, it was magic.
The next day I went a little early to the studio, just to shop for Seal's new cd. I've listened to that song for the first time in a acoustic treated room with a pair o nice monitors. I would do that again and again over the years.
Here I am today, more than 25 years later, a 50 year old man, an well succeded professional (four times latin Grammy award winner) with my eyes filled with tears listening to that song again and feelling what Rick feels with every detail of this incredible song.
Thank you Seal, what a masterpiece. Thank you Rick, for the good job you're doing for the music world. Love you guys!
Sir, beautiful, interesting and moving comment. Reading this, if it were possible, made this video even more enjoyable. Thank you
Forte abraço longa vida a boa musica!
Beautiful commentary… just like the song!
TY
Grande paulo !
The whole soundtrack is epic. Seal. Method Man. Sunny Day Real Estate, U2, Brandy... And others. But, I can still just listen to that whole CD straight through!
The Beato flex! Pulls Seal up on the phone for a couple minutes, then back to business. Boss move. Next episode : "My Seal video was blocked"
Haha!!
Enjoy it while you can!
I’m not a musician but I love that Rick explains how to listen …. because there are so many layers that I would miss. This song is one of my favourites 😊
In his whole life, I don't believe Seal ever wrote anything like this. It's almost as if it was given directly to him by the angels and golly gee what an incredible voice...!
it was definitely inspired
My God, Seal’s isolated vocals sound like a work of art all by themselves-just beautiful.
I rocked the heck out of this album when it came out and I still listen to it today. Great choice.
True. The song would be much stronger even without that obtrusive pseudo orchestral accompaniment which adds nothing of interest. It's all in the vocals.
"Oh my God, that is just ridiculous singing..."
he even speaks in tune on the phone. that really floored me.
I simply loved this song and bought the CD back when it came out. His music is just plain beautiful!
3 words... See him LIVE!
Seal's message at the end, I know he has limited control over his songs and how 'copyright' is enforced, BUT most of us who have been on UA-cam or even those artists who post their work on UA-cam KNOW why there's not as many educators on this platform.... There aren't as many people like Rick on YT because of the upside down laws and greed of publishers who punish people for being fans of the music they publish, to the point they don't understand that such educators like Rick actually extend the life of a song through their love of the song, thus making more money for the publishers. Too bad there are too many idiots on that side of that equation....
Love this insight!
Right on the money! fuck.
A very good point. Extreme short sightedness.
Really, what’s the logic here?
Somebody is going to watch 30-minute lesson videos INSTEAD OF paying to hear the song??
That’s lunacy.
It took 9 people to write a Justin B song that is okay and 1person to write this amazing song.
Seal's first two albums are so great! His vocals are just so smooth. I mean, Crazy is a great song. Violet...just every song from those first two albums, and also the lyrics are really compelling as well. I still listen to both of those albums even now.
Violet! 💜💜💜💜
Seal 3 (Human being) is actually my favourite album with him, so we could even say the first 3. 😊
I was in my late teens or early 20s when i first heard this song and i instantly loved it. But I was mocked by friends for loving something that wasn’t traditional to what I “should” be listing to i.e soul or reggae.
But this song gave me all the feels. It brought me into another realm. I could imagine harpsichords being played or people dancing to this in a Tudor court or something. It’s just a beautiful and historical piece with real instruments and choral elements.
It’s still in itunes playlist & i’m in my 50s now.
Holy smokes! Rick just casually calling Seal in the middle of a video, what a boss
Yeppers, Rick in full blown boss mode...
Is it? Or is it called great editing.
@@UmVtCg The call was obviously premeditated, but still a pleasant surprise
Isolated vocals in the bridge = actual tears. Incredibly moving.
One of my favorite music and soundtrack from the movie back in the 90s. Rick personally I never got to go through music school or the arts but now in my 40s - just listening to your break down of this iconic song; it takes me back to remembering why I fell in love with the song, the acoustics, percussions and all the beautiful elements that make up this great song of those years and time!!
It brings me to tears really, and adding to that the nostalgic feeling I remembered when this Batman movie came out
..to me still as a Batman fan, it is almost out of this world!!
GOD Bless ya Rick
My mom had his album growing up where his face was textured on the cover and i found that absolutely intriguing, i loved it. This song will always be one of those comforts from my childhood.
Pretty sure that's scarring, but he seems to have made it work as positive in his life (or at least I hope so).
I was listening to this WMTSG while driving. Ten minutes in, I pulled over and re-started the video so I could watch Rick. Lesson learned: don’t Beato and drive...
Haha!
I started the video during a work break but will have to come back to it later and give it my full attention.
Little Feat: Those Feat'll Steer You Wrong Some Times.
I can't quite put my finger on what makes *that* song great.
Yep, you can eat to the Beat(o)
But not drive!
I need to check if there's a bardcore version of this song.
Rick's enthusiasm for music is so infectious! My initial thoughts were "oh cool, it's that nice song from Batman" and half way through the video I'm slowly being convinced that it's one of the greatest songs ever recorded. This happens every time he uploads a video.
I hear you! I've always recognized the beauty and greatness of this song, but Rick made me listen to "Roseanna" by Toto with completely new ears. He's amazing.
The radio drove this song into the ground and made it hard to see how great it was after hearing it so many times. It became the biggest radio song of the year and never went away
So true! Everytime!
He brings out the nuances in music. You hear things that youv've never heard before. And that creates appreciation for the song, the musicians, and engineers.. And I think this is why Rick does it and why we listen.
This song is pure magic and it's my favorite song ever. The 2023 version of it is even more incredible with more orchestration! Now I understand its magic! Thank you!
Seal's voice makes it!
I remain convinced that this is one of the most beautiful songs to come out of the 90s!
Probably the entire century, and my musical knowledge goes back to the 1920s
You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain!
I mean, you remain not wrong.
"I remain convinced that this is one of the most beautiful songs"
Fixed it for you. :)
it truly is
Rick: ‘This is my favourite part of the song!’ 8 minutes later ‘No, THIS is my favourite part of the song!’...10 minutes after that, ‘No, hold on, wait this is my favourite part of the song!’
Brilliant stuff, Rick and kudos to Seal for being such an excellent, generous and hugely talented bloke.
He is cool that way. You can't fake passion.
I've always been entranced by the harmonic complexity of this song. I appreciate it so much more as you break it down. Color me freshly enamored.
AND OMGOSH YOU ACTUALLY GOT TO TALK TO HIM.
The song is so multifaceted that it might have fitted perfectly as the main theme in any epic movie score. It's beyond perfection.
Rick: “Kiss from a Rose” is off Seal’s second record, Seal II.
Me, a ‘90s kid: Excuse me, don’t you mean the BATMAN FOREVER soundtrack?
A look at the U2 track would also be good. That was a banger
Jack Black: The most sensitive of all the Batman films
I always felt that putting this song in Batman cheapened the song. But so great that Seal got the recognition he deserved.
Kids... the people who think of Zeppelin's Rock and Roll as the Cadillac Song.
Ton of great stuff on that soundtrack.
Massive Attack
Flaming lips
I remember the first time I heard this song, I was completely blown away, because I couldn't believe a pop song could be so complex. I'm a classical and jazz musician and singer, and don't think much of pop, but THIS SONG!! How was it possible? So now, Rick, you're breaking it all down, the magic behind it, and to ask Seal....awesome! This is some of the greatest content on UA-cam!
His "ask" of Seal was the cherry on the top of his song exploration.
Literally how?! Same question I ask every time I hear it. Sidenote, amazing to see fellow Curran out there 💪
I remember listening to this song for the first time when I was 13, my history teacher brought it to class for some reason I can't remember but one thing i remember is being immediately in chills as soon as it started, I went home eager to look him up online and ever since it became one of my favorite songs ever. Me and other students in school used to refer to Seal as "the soft voice guy". Timeless masterpiece.
Sweet reminiscence.
This song is one of my all time favorites, but hearing Rick dissect it track by track, makes me love it even more. Each track sounds amazing on its own! Plus Seal explaining the line "kiss from a rose on the grey" vs "kiss from the rose on the grave" was gold. I used this song for a high school English project and accidentally started a debate because of that line!
Also, can we talk about how Seal hasn’t aged a DAY in almost 30 years?
Black don't crack
We won’t truly know unless he take his shirt off😛
He looks almost exactly as I remember him when I was a young lad in the 90s, He seems a fairly chilled guy maybe learning to be chill keeps the years off
Why are you asking?
Rick looks like a giddy mad scientist as he’s explaining the intricacies of this song.
I love that picture. You're spot on!
The strings from 18:12 to 18:32 are terrifyingly incredible! Seal doesn’t get enough flowers for this song.
I agree
After Rick's analysis, I have to say I appreciate this song and artist much more.
“This is what pop music used to be”. That’s all you need to know about what qualifies as pop music in 2021. Great video Rick.
The 1993 Christmas number-one, "Mr Blobby" by Mr Blobby remained at number-one for the first week of 1994
One-hundred and thirty-two singles were in the top ten in 1994. Nine singles from 1993 remained in the top 10 for several weeks at the beginning of the year, while "Another Day" by Whigfield, "Cotton Eye Joe" by Rednex, "Love Me for a Reason" by Boyzone, "Them Girls, Them Girls" by Zig and Zag
@@JG-nx3jg - Agreed. I love Rick, but that comment was selective memory.
@@JG-nx3jg I believe Rick is not talking about other songs from 93-94. I think his comment is specifically in reference to current pop music. That’s what it sounds like to me at about the 23:00 mark.
Great comment, but I think you mispoke. What you meant was:
"That's all you need to know about what passes for pop music in 2021."
This is probably my favorite “What makes this song great?”… very enjoyable, got chills, and just really enjoyed Seal’s humility.
He has always been a modest man.
I'm definitely with you on this one.
Completely agree
Yes especially with Seal’s comments. And Rick’s total enjoyment!!
His warm voice also makes it so enjoyable
One word has always summed up this masterpiece for me.. That word ... Righteousness .. One of the greatest of all time..
This song travelled with me and my family on an incredible journey, from, L.A., to Guadeloupe; to Paris and my first real winter . In an kaleidoscope of new, smells, sights and sounds. The medieval cords, with Seals soulful and complex vocals; marked us in ways that are wonderful and strange. I know this post is a year old, don't know how it found me, but, thank you.
