I dont have nay of those on 4k yet so I couldnt evaluate them to put them on the list but I will be doing several more videos in this series as I add and evaluate more digitally shot films!
@@AVAPopCulture I look forward to seeing the future revisions of both your film and digital lists over time. Great cinema is great cinema regardless of format. One thing I respect that you talk about is curating what you like in your collection rather than just collecting for collecting sake.
@@bigfil2093 thank you! yeah, I am not a "title accumulator" lol...I have to like or love the movie or really want to see it or have it be heavily recommended usually to purchase a movie...quality over quantity is something I feel strongly about!
Great video, my unknowns were Frozen Empire and Crimson Peak, I'll give them a go. The Northman looked amazing, I'm not an expert but it looked very classically filmic like you described in The Witch.
The Marvel movies in my collection: Infinity War & Endgame Guardians trilogy Winter Soldier & Civil War Dune and Dune 2 were beautifully shot. Definitely one of my go-to's.
I dont have Dune and Dune 2 in my collection so I couldnt add them to this collection of films...If/when I get tehm and look at them, they may be added to rd2 or 3 of this video series lol...
Hey Chase, I'm on my second feature of the night: Crimson Peak, so far an amazing film! (for the record I don't trust this Thomas guy, lol) Just wondering though, I ended up with the Arrow BluRay (instead of 4K) for whatever reason and I'm struggling with the crushed blacks, do you think the 4K upgrade helps with this at all? (I see it's still available on Amazon) I feel like I have my (OLED) monitor dialed in pretty well, but I could be wrong.
crushed blacks can often happen when stuff is shot in 4k or higher digital and then compressed down to a bluray....almost like it is squeezing too much info down into small area so it cant seperate the detail from lets say black hair in a dark room...the 4k should help expand that detail out...though OLEDs, because they emit their own light, they shut off pixels to acheive true black and can sometimes contribute to that issue
@@AVAPopCulture that's accurate to what I'm seeing, "crushed" may not even by the correct term so much as little to no detail in the blackest of the blacks. Amazing film though, thanks so much Chase! btw, can you come calibrate my TV? 😂
I dont have any of those on 4k so i couldnt evaluate them for this video but I suspect I will have at least pacific rim by the time I get to round 2 or 3 of this video lol
yeah they are top of the line digitally shot but "filmic" movies and they are just good movies on top of it! also, early congrats on the approaching 2k subs!
As I add more digitally shot 4ks to my collection that I feel are "worthy" I will do additional videos! But I will never add one to a list that I dont believe is a great looking movie and I will not add one that I dont own to the list - If I am telling you that you should own it, I will own it myself first!
My list in no particular order if you are looking for the best looking digital 4K titles. Mortal Engines Gemini Man Pacific Rim Blade Runner 2049 John Wick 4 Top Gun: Maverick Dune and Dune II Avatar: Way of the Water Alita: Battle Angel All these titles look great but I still get more excited for a really good restoration of a movie shot on film.
Maverick and John Wick just may have been planned for round 2 of this video series (when I find another 10 I think are worthy lol) - I agree, way more exciting to have great 4k film restorations
I went a different way with The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy films with all but the 3rd Guardians being on 3D Blurays. I hardly see many films that look that different from regular Blurays to upgrade them to 4K but the recent copy I got of the orginal anime of Ghost In the Shell was actually shocking to me. There were several shots at the beginning of this film that show that the 4K is far superior in quality. It's funny you are talking about Ghostbusters since I just ordered the two orginals on regular Blu-ray disks after seeing Frozen Empire just 2 days ago on Netflix. I will be honest I look to see when a lot of the 4K go on sale before buying most of them. It honestly depends on the film and how much I enjoy watching it.
what is your setup like? I know it was harder to tell a difference on one of my QLED tvs that didnt have as nice of a player or fast enough 4k cables...BUT with Digitally shot films, they will never ever ever ever shine and stand out the way 4k restorations of film will...not ever!
@AVAPopCulture I watch most of my movies on a 4K projector that also does 3D. I use the PS4 or even my old PS3 to watch any of the physical copies. I do have a 4K Roku always on the projector. I also have an LG 3D TV that I have had for years in my office. I do notice a difference in how the 3D looks comparing the projector to the TV. The projector uses shutter glasses while the LG is passive. You know you really make me want to try uploading some of my own videos again. I really appreciate that you have always replied back to me.
Good list but you need to add pitch perfect! That’s one that is watched often in the house 😉 (Maybe not by the boys/men…but the females have watched it a LOT) 😂😂😂
I was waiting until I had enough that I thought I should put on, and now I have more than 10 I can make this arguement for, so I will probably do part 2 of this list as I get more and more 4ks in...
and that is just for the "brain" as they say...not everything else you need to make it work which would be about 10k more without the lenses lol...BUT there is no reason to spend that much...The $5000 -$8000 cameras like the ones used to shoot Crimson Peak, The Witch, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 are plenty good enough!!
That's a great list! I do own most of those but I realize there are several that I haven't watched (which is retarded). Now I have a renewed interest in some films I already own! Loved the behind the scenes filming and digital camera info as well!
@stickywicked447 thank you! The ole "need to watch" lost can pile up on is all! I'm glad it sparked an urge to watch some of these movies - I love hearing that! And I am such a big camera and cinematography guy that I love squeezing in a little of that talk lol

the Ghostbusters movies aren't shot in 8k...they are shot in 4.5k about the same or less resolution of most 35mm film camera films....Afterlife is slow at the start but Paul Rudd and the ending more than make up for that in my opinion.... A lot of the stuff that gets way too heavy into CGI is a turn off for me, which is why I dont own that many digitally shot 4ks!
