    Love your new little co-star’s! 😻
    FYI for those curious, I hold snaps successfully in the cooler for 2 weeks, set at 38 degrees. I use Chrysal 2 holding solution and change the water every 5 days.

    Loved watching you two (you're hilarious) and the kittens are cute. Hearing your thoughts on the different flowers is interesting. Flowers vary so much by area and year. Enjoy your time off.

    This is my first year growing, and i started with zinnias as recommended by so many as a first-timer. I loved them at first, but they are now just covered with different worms. Some are tiny. Some are huge. They kook beautiful from a distance, and then as i walk through, I see all the flaws. The quality is definitely declining. I am sorry you are having some of the same thoughts as me, but it's encouraging to hear that it's not just me. I started hearing negative thoughts in my little brain like "if you can't keep zinnias healthy, you might as well quit" 😭.
    Thank you for sharing! I love your videos! ❤

    Love you all! Understand zinnia trouble totally. Oddly, we direct seeded (into landscape fabric where they would "live"). Those plants have been an Incredible Improvement over what we start in trays. Our "tray babies " look & grow well, but the direct seed are just better, healthier, & more productive! Also a Ton less work than starting in trays. ( ThreeStrands; NW AR, year 2)

    I am a small scale Arkansas flower farmer, zone 8a. Because of the few types of cut flowers that are heat tolerant, I have ordered Asiatic lilies for next year. Love your videos!

    So true about Zinnia's... if the plant is healthy they will be great in bouquets, in my experience.
    This year I pinched them before planting and planted them in early May, a week after last frost. They are the strongest I have grown. The plant is shorter, but the stems are 24 inches at least.
    Full sun and water.. the soil dries fast. Thanks for all the " banter" cats and humar.. ❤❤

    I agree about the zinnias. They were never my favorite. This year has been super weird for them. Super short, small, browning. What has surprised me have been the marigolds! I’m second year and this year I started my marigolds earlier and added a few varieties. They are strong tall and vibrant. Not super huge flowers but the size of my zinnias so far.

    I too, have a love hate relationship with Zinnias! They take me longer to harvest than any other flower I grow. The lighter colors seem to brown out quicker. The Oklahomas are very petite, My favorite to grow and behave the best is Uproar Rose Zinnia!

    I'm a cool climate grower and am finding out that the 50/60day sunflowers planted in Spring are taking much longer than the packet maturity dates. I think the soil temp, day temp as well as and day length affect their rate of development too. We had a cool spring (not frost) with lots of overcast days and rain in contrast to the sunny early summer we experienced last yr. My procut sunflowers have been in ground for 52days already and we are still about 2wks away from harvesting a bloom. I"m learning that perennials are what will most likely be the blooms to use between that Spring to Summer lag time.

    Have you found that celosia holds up in the cooler? Ours seems to brown very easily under cooler temps. 😢

    I know that tunnel space is precious, but what about putting some sunflowers in the tunnel. That could speed them up enough to have some for Mothers Day maybe. Just a thought

    I am in zone 8 I planted sunflowers back in April they still haven’t bloomed! I also had to pull lots of them because they got fungus due to the very wet and cool conditions we had this year. I just planted a succession of sunflowers we shall see how they do.

    Could marigolds be a good substitute for zinnias? I have some of the coco orange in the ground for fall, but this is my first time growing them. 🤷‍♀️

    My 4th year flower farming but 5th year cutting zinnas for arrangements and I don't like the "vase life worry" either. The only other flower that could take the place is dahlias but I refuse to put all the energy into what it take to grow them. I cut those the 3rd year 😂
    I need advice on another bloom. I do have unlimited hydrangeas but would like another bloom.

    I think sunflowers are very temperature sensitive.

  • @Juliet-ej3gc
    @Juliet-ej3gc 3 місяці тому

    Do you think the soil temp is what makes the difference in the sunnies? Even first year growing in NC mts I saw this with the bloom time on the zinnas I did. I sowed really early and the second later sow came on sooner then my first planting. I wonder if you covered or green house grew if you wouldn't have better results in timing? I am going to attempt to cattle panel and plastic "green house" my fall sunnies to see if I can get them through Indian summer and reuse same scenario for spring. Just a thought?

    • @nancydockter4093
      @nancydockter4093 3 місяці тому +1

      YES. From Zone 8a flower farmer: I grew sunflowers in my hoop house this summer on a whim in June to fill a spot. Overall it worked fine. However, the ones on the south side shaded the ones on the north side. I was too busy to run some rope to corral those, so they flopped over into a mess. But this tells me that next spring, before I put on shade on the house, I could do an early crop of sunflowers, likely transplants, to grow some for early spring and Mother's Day sales.

    Im feeling the same way about zinnias this year. I feel like they're decreasing the value of my mixed bouquets. I grow benary too, the first cut is always kinda pitiful but mine aren't coming back much better either. Super annoying!
