- If you have a Litter-Robot III Open Air 3 and it's stopped working with yellow blinking / flashing light and/or the globe does not rotate in normal operating cycle or spinning continuously counter clockwise in one direction, then this video might be for you. You can read more about this repair below, but first, here are the #ᴬᴰlinks to some of the components, parts and tools required for this repair or alternative products you might want to consider:

With this type of yellow light error, if you continue to press power or cycle button, the globe will continue to spin in one direction and the key on the back of the globe might snap out and sometimes the bonnet will come loose.
Of course if your unit is still under warranty, then you should call the Automated Pet Care Products, Inc. DBA AutoPets (www.litter-rob..., Robot Shop (www.robotshop....) or any other authorized dealers where you bought the unit from, and have them diagnose via the phone. They will either send you a replacement part or fix it under the terms of the warranty.
If you searched online, it might tell you that there is a problem with excess weight, globe positioning or defective hall effect sensor. Based on our experience however, this blinking yellow light as shown in our video is because of the anti-pinch safety feature malfunctioned or became defective.
Basically, if the globe is blinking the yellow light, you will need to replace the Cat Sensor or re-position the Anti-Pinch safety feature.
The Anti-Pinch safety feature is two pin connected to the motherboard that must touched each other continuously. If they are separated, you will have an alarm (yellow blinking light). The Anti-Pinch safety is located in the bottom back left of the Litter-Robot. You will need to unplug the unit, remove the bonnet, the globe and the drawer. It is the ''Two Metal'' pins. With a flash light, you should be able to see if they are touching each other or not.
If they are not touching each other, try to re-position them with a flat screw driver by pushing them upwards. However, if they are touching each other, you will need to replace your cat sensor.
With Litter-Robot III Open Air, should you have any problems or error lights, the first thing you should do is to empty out the litter, take apart the unit, thoroughly clean it and then put it back together and re-test the unit. Make sure the put the unit on a flat surface and away from the wall or corners. Most of the times, these simple procedures will help you repair the problems you encountered.
In this video, we will take you through the steps on opening the bottom base unit and to remove or replace the anti-pinch detectors.
Sometimes, the flashing yellow light might be followed by blinking red light or timing indicator, and in that case you might have to replace the cat sensor as well. If you need to replace the cat sensor, you check on our step-by-step tutorial video guide here: • Litter-Robot III | How...

You explain this 100 times better than litter robot company website does.
My wife fixed ours with replacing the dfi pinch sensor kit altogether. The new boards are shorter and insulated. She did it while I was sleeping. I'm only here because of your cute cat assistant 😂😻
This video helped me fix my blinking yellow light when all other youtube videos failed..Litter Robot needs to be compensating this young man for his excellent help/how-to video!
Clear explanations & demonstration. Better then the LR site. Thank you!
Oh man. I’ve been struggling with that yellow blinking light for years. This is the first video that’s identified the problem. Thank you! Please don’t ever take this video down.
My dude! That was it, for me I had some clumps inside that had somehow missed the tray and so when putting the tray in, the back of it moved up, interferring with the sensor. Works perfect again! Thanks!!
Thanks! Helped me fix mine. Just got all my cats to start using it and it starts jamming. I didn't have a long screwdriver to take the whole thing apart so I used a old toothbrush and a toothpick to clean the contacts and use my phone camera to get a better look.
Me too!! So glad I found this video! He's better than the company reps!
Our litter robot had been sitting stuck in that yellow blinking stage for months. I took it apart to the point of being able to easily get to that weight sensor which had litter blocking it. I cleaned that and now it works again. Great video, much better than anything on the litter robot website. They should hire you to make tutorials!
Thank you - after a few weeks of fast flashing yellow, problem solved! I removed contacts and cleaned them. Reinstalled and good to go. I feel so accomplished and it’s not even 11 am!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Your video has saved me so much frustration!
This video just saved me $400, I was ready to pepper my LR3 with buckshot! The fix was simple, one of the contacts for the weight sensor had come loose. 9 screws, a couple of wires, and the fix was in. Thanks a bunch!
Cannot upvote this video enough!!! Thank you! This was the solution I was looking for!!
Great video! What a lifesaver. With a GUM Proxabrush, a headlamp, and the right angle, I was able to clean the affected sensor without removing any screws or taking the base apart.
Thank you for posting this you saved us!! I have researched until I about tossed mine and bought a new one. I've only had it about 2 years so I was very disappointed. Sitting at work decided to try to find an answer once more. I found this video. My hands are small enough I didn't have to take the unti apart. I was able to reach in there and clean the connectors... walllaa we're working again!
Good info. However, the part you were fixing there is not a weight sensor. It's a pinch sensor. If a cat got caught in the drum when it started turning, that sensor would keep the cat from being injured if it got its leg in the wrong place. The weight sensor is the round thing underneath the unit, which is spring loaded. On early models, that weight spring could be adjusted for the weight of the cat. In addition, there is a pair of metal contacts on the left side of the part that goes over the drum. They provide power to the blue light in the drum, but if those two contacts get dirty or corroded, the drum will not turn very well, and it may quit working completely.
Excellent video, thank you.
Thanks so much for this video, Aiman! I was able to use it to repair three Litter Robots that I've had for several years that have been glitching this way for some time, requiring me to re-set everything by hand. Now they all have steady blue lights and they're all completely operational! I thought I was going to have to buy new ones. Thanks so much!
Wow! That's really awesome! I'm glad to hear that I helped out! Thanks for watching!
Very nice video. Thank you.
I used LitterRobot3 for 3 years without issue. Then the yellow light kept flashing and spinning stopped. I almost threw away the machine. For the last 1 year I have been cleaning by hand without the robot. Today after watching your nice video, I devided to re-check the two metal plates (the two metal plates open/close circuit in response to sensing overweight). It seems the two metal plates may be permanently apart for some reason. What I am testing now is put a hair clip around them to permanently close the circuit. Yellow light has disappeared and the machine rotates normally for now. Some other video asked me to clean the touching part of the metal plates as they may be dirtied. I tried that before and didn't work. I suspect the hairclip might work. If so, then I will take the machine apart and manually bend the metal plate a bit so they can be touching again even without the hairclip, and still open the circuit if weight weight.
Great video on fixing the weight sensor issue. It was an easy fix to clean the contacts and re-assemble. Thanks!
Aiman, thank you so much! I tried everything and then I followed your instructions and now my Litter-Robot is fixed. I appreciate it so much!
Hi Aiman! Thank you!!! Our litter robot is fixed! Your kitty is so pretty, I hope she wasn't embarrassed to be the star of your video about litter robot repair, she looks like she should star in a more glamorous video!
Thank you!!
Thank you! Totally didn’t know about the sensor, I did however use a toothbrush the clean the connections so I didn’t have to take it apart!
Thank you! Was exactly my problem there was just a little clump of litter blocking the pinch connection. Knocked that out, problem solved.
I tried everything regarding cleaning, wasn't until I saw this video that made sense why the blinking lights would not go away, great video and tutorial, thanks so much!
WOW🙏Outstanding and very informative & CRYSTAL CLEAR! #litterrobot needs to pay 💰 you for this!!
this kid is studying at Harvard now - I'm not even surprised haha, smart kid!
EXCELLENT JOB, BOY!!! You saved us. Many thanks.
AWESOME VIDEO !! It was my EXACT problem. Cleaned up those overweight contacts which were full of schmutz and PRESTO...reset and working again. THANK YOU.
Incredible video. Really breaks it down. This job took me like an hour! Solid fix! Thank you OP!
I’m glad it helped!!!
Thank you.
Never commented on a video but so helpful deserved a comment!
Clear and easy to follow.
Fixed the problem straight away with confidence!
That part you were pushing is not the Weight sensor...it is the pinch sensor...and you should test it regularly...it also gets dirty from the littler falling on it.!! The weight sensor is located bottom rear.
This is the "pinch sensor" not an overweight sensor as described. It is to prevent your cat's leg from being pinched is she tries to use the robot while it is mid-cycle. The weight sensor is on the underside of the unit and looks like a hockey puck.
Thankyou, You saved me a lot of time fixing my Litter Robot!!
Hello Aiman, thanks a lot for your great explanation, I had the issue you described (fast blinking yellow light) and as a matter of fact the circuit was open because the contacts were dirty, cleaned them, back to work, thanks again!
I am so happy to hear that it helped you out! I'm glad to have been of service! Thanks for watching!
Great Job! 1st time doing this after about four years. Worked as described, pulled and cleaned contacts.
Awesome, 2nd fix on my litter box thanks to you.
Good job, this is the video that helped me find the problem.
I learned a bunch about how the robot works. I think I can troubleshoot most issues now! Thank you!!
Don’t normally comment but this helped me out. Thank you man. Good work.
Excellent demonstration. Thank you.
Your awesome 👏..it worked 💪🏼
Thank you so much for making this video! I was having this exact same problem and this helped me fix it.
Thank you. This may be what is wrong with my litter robot. Thank you for the video
Hey I just wanted to say I feel like I should cash app you a couple hundred dollars for posting this video and saving me 600.00, I was just about to order my wife a new when I found this video and to my surprise, your instructions and very detailed video saved my wallet. Thank you for posting this video young man. Cheers!
Great job explaining this issue👏🤩
Actually I want to buy another but. You save my $600. Thank you.
Dude you are awesome! Thanks so much, the robot litter website and help guide was so awful but you explained everything perfectly
Thank you!! I love that you explain exactly how the parts work because that’s what I needed to understand.
Very useful information, save me money. Thank you for sharing.
Thx so much ❤ awesome video
Thank you for such a great video! Thanks to you and your clear, detailed instructions, our litter robot is fixed!
Thank you!!!
Your cat is awesome.
She is :)
Very helpful for diagnosis and repair! Thank you!
Thanks man. Perfect. 5 min, done. Most I have had to do in the 5 years I have owned it, with 3 cats
Such an intelligent guy, thank you!
You're a cool cat, keep doing you dude
What a great video!
Thank you!!!
Thank you so so so much for this video. Very well explained and helped me solved the issue I was facing. Keep up the good work :)
You are a genius thank you so much 😊
I used a dewalt small wet/dry vac. I just reversed it so air was going out. It wasn’t too strong and I got a big clump of litter out of sensor area. I avoided taking everything apart. I would of never of looked there if not for this video.
Thank you, Sir, you just saved me 350$!!
Nicely done!
I had a lot of issues with the drum stopping half way, tried everything, cleaning the contacts, cleaning the whole unit, cleaning out the pinch sensor, this was over a couple of years, but afte a couple of days it would start doing this stop half way thing again. This time I cleaned the contacts with light sandpaper, pushed a little bit of cardboard in behind the contacts to keep them pushed out, and, I think this is what made the difference, i then cleaned out the little sensor on the top of the bonnet as the clear plastic oover for the sensor was full of dust, & it has not stopped once in a long time now. It would always stop half way leading me to think it wasn't the bonnet contacts, as it should have stopped at random points in the cycle but worth cleaning out the contacts anyway.
Very cute kitty:)
Thank you 🙏
Video helped me thanks!
Great video! Fixed my robot
Excellent video, thanks!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Thanks man. It was definitely the weight sensor. Just take a flat head and vacuum and cleaned between the cracks.
I need some advice... mine has been working okay, and then lately (Last 2-3 mo's) it seems to think every 3 days the drawer is full. I pulled the bonnet off 3 times this morning and FULL cleaned it due to the dreaded pinch fault. Wont cycle at all. Can't get the error to clear. I can't get underneath it to try and check the pinch mech just yet. But I'm thinking it might be that the plastic piece might be warped...
Good video! What is that other sensor for and how does it work?
Are you referring to the CAT sensor or the tray full indicator sensor?
@@EyeOnAiman Well, I've learned since I posted that there is the cat sensor, the pinch sensor, an electric eye sensor to turn the light off and on, and a litter tray sensor. I think all of these except the sensor for the light are mechanical.
@@robertbrandywine Thanks for replying. I've forgotten about what I learned from my dad since I did the video because our unit hasn't had any issue. Apology for not replying sooner, I've been playing catch up with the comments, but this week the school is off so I hope to be able to respond to most of the comments on my videos. Again thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to write. Good luck with your Litter Robot III.
Thanks. Just what i needed to fix it :-)
Rather than taking it apart. I took a long thin blade screwdriver and spread them apart, just a little, sprayed electronic cleaner on them released them and it worked
Holy sh** it worked thanks!!!
Thank you, thank you! I got my litter robot working again thanks to this video ❤🎉
You’re welcome, you’re welcome! I’m glad I helped you out!
Thank you so much 💓
Can you show us what to do with a rapid blinking light. We have replaced the pinchers, we have tried resetting it, by turning it off and unplugging it. But still has a rapid flashing yellow light, when turned back on. What else do we need to do?
Check out this manual to see if there is anything else you can try!
www.litter-robot.com/manual_pdf/Litter-Robot_III-Manual-Revision_C.pdf
Please help with your litter robot 3
Thank you so much.
You rock!
Thanks. Just what i needed to fix it
God bless your soul
Aiman, thanks the video! I deep clean pinch detector, yellow light still quick flash. Then I remove two metal pin, force contact pin still yellow flash, what else do you think to check?
Thanks so much!!!
What do you do when the power button will not turn on or off? Or the solid yellow light stays on and you cannot reset it?
Hi aiman, I clean already but still having the from, I really need ur help
What was the issue?
EyeOnAiman how if cat litter totally doesn’t move
EyeOnAiman blue lights an the top not light on
The weight sensor is the one on the bottom the round button
😔 I have the flashing yellow light but on the app it says bonnet removed when it wasnt.i did the whole bending 90degree thing to the bonnet latches and it didn't help..could it be the issue you described? That its the sensors ?
Yes, if you want to further check it out, here's the link to the manual!
www.litter-robot.com/manual_pdf/Litter-Robot_III-Manual-Revision_C.pdf
That piece of plastic is actually a pinch sensor and not a weight sensor. Its to prevent the cats from pinching their legs if they decide to play around while the machine is in motion.
I don't suppose you have a suggestion for an issue of the robot being stuck on a yellow UNBLINKING light, not responding to anything (even the power button)?
I've tried dismantling and putting back together the CPU. The bottom sensors appear to be fine.
Unfortunately I brought mine 11 months ago from a UK former international partner of Litter Robot and the company went bust a few months ago. I even brought 18 month extended warranty, but the company are uncontactable and I'm stuck with a broken robot.
I've tried waiting in the queue to speak with litter robot in the US but the international calls have already cost be a fortune!
Sorry for the ramble, I'm a bit stuck!
www.litter-robot.com/manual_pdf/Litter-Robot_III-Manual-Revision_C.pdf
That is very strange! According to the manual, there is no error when stuck on a yellow light, except for indicating "The Litter-Robot is cycling (Clean or Empty cycle)" Maybe your model believes it is perpetually stuck in cleaning mode? Maybe check the sensors that detect when the cycle is over?
still not working, but I agree excellent video
I cleaned mine and it’s still blinking. Frustrating.
Quite honestly, I would NEVER recommend someone get a Litter Robot. I have 2 - that's $1200 worth of litterboxes. Both worked fine for about 2 years, and since then I have had nothing but trouble with them. First one problem then another. I live alone and don't have someone who can take them apart and fix them. I can't do it myself. So I have $1200 of worthless litter boxes. I should have stayed with the regular boxes.
Could it be that my cat is too fat. Lol. Poor baby. He's on a diet now. Hopefully it works. Thanks for the great video
It’s a pinch sensor just in case you’re cat fall in that hole that sensor will stop the system when pushed
Great video man! But not necessary to take the base apart...all those screws and wires will spell trouble and regrets for some (especially on a $600 shit box🤦🏼♂️). You can easily use a flashlight and needle nose pliers to bend those metal pieces back together and or sand them off a little bit for better contact or vice versa if they need to be pulled apart some! I won't know my outcome for a while as my Siamese has decided to go inside it for more time than I care to go back down and investigate! 🤦🏼♂️😂🤢
It’s called the pinch sensor
That is not the weight sensor
I believe that's the anti pinch safely...
Just bypass the damn pinch detector by removing those pinch clips and twist the wires together w some electrical tape. No cat on the planet is going into a moving machine. Problem solved.
Unfortunately my cat will. He doesn’t give 2 f’s and is pretty fearless. My guess is plenty of cats will which is why it was designed that way to begin with. 😞
Take the key on the back off and get rid of the shield.....
