Before the Sam Harris fanboys come in Chomsky is NOT saying its all geopolitics Chomsky is NOT saying it has nothing to do with religion Chomsky is saying we don't consider other outside factors nearly enough
Nocebo Affect That's just simply *wrong*. ... I'd suggest you listen to Harris' own word instead of those trying to relay them twisted to suit their own agenda.
Nocebo Affect I haven't time right now for finding a timestamp, but while Harris do think Islam as a religion is a fundamental part of the problem he doesn't deny that there has been numerous foreign policy blunders which have played a part too. Try listen to his podcasts.
I get the Sam Harris argument, but if we are talking about terrorism specifically targeted at the West, look no further than our own policy. Our own government admits it which is very rare
Here's the solution. Carpet bomb them with food and clothing, and housing--esp. portable geodesic Bucky fuller instant set up domes. What's cheaper cluster bombs or food, clothing and shelter? I'd say food, clothing and shelter.
+Stephen Philip Means Yeah, I've had this vision of drones dropping appliances and iPhones and so on. The military industrial guys would still have the enormous budgets they love, and the security of America would be so improved, there'd be no going back. We must both be crazy, the authorities would agree.
akhtar shah America England n France bomb n bombed or economically devastate many nations only to give them huge loans to rebuild.. the list is long India. African nations. south American nations. Indonesia. germany. Japan ... war is imperial business and certain savage anglo Saxon nations have championed that for 300 years now ... otherwise states are violent institutions ...be it China or Russia or America .. all kill and silence their own citizens every year.
why can't we all be a voice of reason like chomsky ! he is old now and there's no escape from death and i'm crying already for having to lose a man like him
Glenn! I love Glenn. Everytime I see him I laugh. The Professor is always good to listen. No wonder why he doesn't have a so call smartphone. The name tells all...
If there is a powerful military-industrial complex and if there is such a thing as corporatocracy, then one might have to say that there is just no money in peace. I want to believe that there must be other ways of making money and that this is just a misallocation of capital.
I like Sam Harris and this was a really good talk. I try to not be a "fanatic" of anyone. An open dialogue is of upmost important when dealing with such sensitive problems as terrorism.
If socio-economic condition is what leads young ones to terrorism, then why we don't see that many kashmiri pandits, american Indians or other subjugated groups taking arms and resort to terrorism globally?
I understand and don't dismiss the terrorists motivations, but if religious leanings has no bearing, why is it only Sunni Islam that's producing these terrorist when there not the only victims? And why don't you ever address this?
Where are most islamic terrorist acts conducted? Anyone know if Chomsky has ever addressed this question? Most appear to occur within islamic societies, which would imply an internal cultural/religious problem. How would Chomsky rationalize the killing of coptics to western foreign policy? How about attacks in Russia and China, is that due to western foreign policy as well?
Both Russia and China don't do it in the Western way They make sure to clear up the aftermath of their dealings And make sure to get education before spouting nonsense
Greenwald says there are countries where there is no threat of Islamic terrorism, rattles on about the horrible things the US has done and then *completely fails to mention* how the Belgians have upset the terrorists.
I tend to side more with Harris on this issue . However , i find Chomsky's approach to be very level headed and plausible also . There is truth on both sides of the isle here , but to me the problem originates with ideological indoctrination .
Sam Harris is absolutely right on this issue. Even if the U.S. withdrew all military bases from the Middle East and stopped the drone strikes, ISIS would still continue to rape and maim people.
I'm a big fan of both Chomsky and Harris, and I am admittedly perplexed by their seeming dislike of one another (although I did read their e-mail exchange posted on Harris' website). I find they are both delivering their own valuable and important message. From my perspective, I don't think either of them is wrong, and I don't find their messages mutually incompatible. In short, I agree with both of them.
Nice Kyle, that's cool to be able to see the simultaneous wisdom of seemingly conflicting perspectives. Also I agree with this other guy that Chomsky probably has the more broad and rooted analysis on topics like this. Even if they have both done great research, some scholars have definitley witnessed the depths of the beast xD
Sam Harris isn't stupid; he is just unqualified to talk about every subject that he talks about. He isn't a philosopher, but he starts talking about free will and dismissed academic free will philosophy as "boring." He isn't a political philosopher, but he projects his own New Atheist agenda into political discussion.
Although I do like Sam Harris and DO realize that Chomsky isn't trying to make a blanket claim that none of these attacks are motivated by religion, I do think it's odd that they're talking about the countries that are targeted in a way that makes them seem as though they bring it upon themselves.
They do bring it themselves. Dont get me wrong what these terrorist did was wrong and dreadful by you should ask yourself why would they do that? Then you can solve the problem and they are saying bombing and killing people in those countries will only increase terrorist attacks. So the best way to leave them alone and they will surely leave western countries alone. Using drones like a video games and destroying villages and cities wont help. Those are human beings just like us. They have love ones , they have feeling, they have ambition in life etc just like us. Imagine china or russia using drones and attacking neirghbourhoods in the u.s or uk. How would the people react. Ask yourself that
It was also a response to British imperialism. Because The British took a lot of the land of Egypt after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and there stance on Palestine and Israel, so yeah most of what you say is misleading.
Along with Brazil, Japan, Chile, as countries not targeted by IS/Al Qaeda you can add Israel. You know, the one closest and apparently most opposed to their beliefs? Yeah, funny that.
***** Hmmmmmm, why is that? But do you really see that as more surprising than 0 attacks on Israel? What about Vatican City? Lots in Turkey, many in Western Europe/US, not so much anywhere else = it's Islam that is the only problem....... Obviously. That's the only connection. derp
The whole talk is really good. Thanks for sharing this clip
Before the Sam Harris fanboys come in
Chomsky is NOT saying its all geopolitics
Chomsky is NOT saying it has nothing to do with religion
Chomsky is saying we don't consider other outside factors nearly enough
+Kyrie Irving
And neither is Harris saying it's all muslims.

This shit is powerful man. People are watching the wrong videos.
"All those actors that play the roles of journalists on TV" - Greenwald. A good stinger! Chomsky is the voice of political sanity.
5:40
so sharp memory you have dear mr chomsky
I get the Sam Harris argument, but if we are talking about terrorism specifically targeted at the West, look no further than our own policy. Our own government admits it which is very rare
Blowback doesn't explain the thousands of Westerners of European descent joining Isis in their Jihad. Blowback is only half the story here.
Matthew D what's the other half? That our citizen are equally as disheartened and disgusted by this society we've created?
the other half is the hardline literal interpretations of the Quran and the Hadith.
i love this man.
Great discussion, No hysterical bullshit. Talks about the varying dimensions to the problem
Here's the solution. Carpet bomb them with food and clothing, and housing--esp. portable geodesic Bucky fuller instant set up domes. What's cheaper cluster bombs or food, clothing and shelter? I'd say food, clothing and shelter.

hilarious idea ..... perhaps a Samaritan Hollywood plot
but where's the world domination? haha, boring
I always wondered the same it's so easy and cheaper to control though economic why will u bomb if u can with half of that money buy them all
akhtar shah America England n France bomb n bombed or economically devastate many nations only to give them huge loans to rebuild.. the list is long India. African nations. south American nations. Donald Trump?
Was it you? The one with thumb down in this video? Or Maybe was your vice-president candidate Bill O'Reilly?

Chomsky is unbeatable!
I was there in person. Great talk, the guests were great (Snowden is amazing) but the moderator was annoying as hell.

Can somebody provide me the link of the report mentioned in this video (just googling ends up in multiple results)
this is Gold. 3 people i follow & respect in one video? wow
It mainly comes down to blow back, Chomsky and Ron Paul both see it.
If socio-economic condition is what leads young ones to terrorism, then why we don't see that many kashmiri pandits, american Indians or other subjugated groups taking arms and resort to terrorism globally?
because they are not getting bombed day in day out
Well if you’re gonna ask some leading logically challenged questions, here’s one for you; why was there terrorism in Japan or south america
Chomsky is still and always the king
What's the name of the guy beside Dr. Chomsky?
I understand and don't dismiss the terrorists motivations, but if religious leanings has no bearing, why is it only Sunni Islam that's producing these terrorist when there not the only victims? And why don't you ever address this?
+Mo K you make some points I hadn't considered. I guess I'm gonna have to reevaluate my position. Thanks for replying, I appreciate it
It seems you are a victim of ignorance
Then why is it that the US is spreading destruction and anarchy throughout the world
Yup!
The fact that there are only 35k Muslims in Brazil probably helps.
*Chomsky laughs in Manufacturing Consent*
Or maybe the I Q got to something with living in those “suburbs slums”! Have ever think about that possibility grandpa?
👍🏼

Gangster Haafthor Harris is a fool
Sam Harris is absolutely right on this issue. Even if the U.S. withdrew all military bases from the Middle East and stopped the drone strikes, ISIS would still continue to rape and maim people.
Tru. But the Rate of Ideological indoctrination increases with the rate of bombs dropped and governments destabilized.

You're aware Sam Harris said he would support Ben Carson for president over Noam Chomsky? He's actually a lunatic.

Noam, the "roots and causes" are a book that starts with the letter "Q", and rhymes with "Duran".
Go check out a Sam Harris vid
Great, go bomb that then.
Meanwhile, the adults will talk about causal factors that we can actually influence.
1924 Muslim Brotherhood playbook - way before US was involved in Mideast - forgotten history - don't you know the history of Lebanon and Iran
The Muslim Brotherhood wasn’t even founded in 1924, it was founded in 1928.
It was also a response to British imperialism. Because The British took a lot of the land of Egypt after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and there stance on Palestine and Israel, so yeah most of what you say is misleading.

+Crouchy232323 ISIS never attacks Iran. It's proof Iran is ISIS.
Atheist On Demand
If ISIS also Israeli, Brazilian, Maxican, South African and Saudi Arabian then? Or Just the latter? :-)
Crouchy232323 All of them. ISIS didn't attack Mars so ISIS is martian. Obviously. WAKE UP!
+Crouchy232323 quick correction.... Isis has attacked Saudi Arabia repeatedly ..
What a shame poor you Muslims countries... Especially the people not the leaders.
Don't worry it won't be long before you will be under our regime
