@3:32 - The penalty is assessed on the kicking team (as the Seahawks were the ones who just scored, they will now need to kickoff to the Rams). It means that the kickoff will take place 15 yards further toward their own end zone. This makes it more likely that the receiving team will be able to return the kick (wasn't a touchback - when the kick goes into/out of the end zone) and gain better field position to start their drive.

The NFL (No Fun League) was notorious for not allowing celebrations until recently. That’s why Terrell Owens (#81) was so fun to watch back then. He came up with some good ones. He was the guy celebrating on the Dallas star. He later played for Dallas. That was him with the popcorn after he joined the team. They left out one of his better ones. He hid a Sharpie in his sock and retrieved it to autograph the football after he scored a TD!

Celebrations in the NFL have had an up and down journey. For awhile excessive celebrations were banned and a penalty accessed, that’s why a good chunk of these you will see penalties. Several years back they lifted that ban and now allow celebrations as long as it’s not directed at another opposing team member or doesn’t take more than a certain amount of time for the most part. So feel good that the NFL has leaned more into fun in the most recent years.

The simplest way to describe the rules for a touchdown, The player has to have control of the ball, while that player is in bounds, and the ball must reach the goal line. So if the last place the player's body touched the ground was in the field of play, they can be in the air out of bounds as long as they had control of the ball while in play.
So for two examples: 1. the player runs 20 yards to the end zone and get knocked out on the side. If he is in the air when he goes out of bounds, and the ball crosses the goal line (indicated by the orange pylon at the corner) under his control before any part of his body hits the ground, it's a touchdown. If the ball can't reach that orange pylon, or any part of his body touches the ground out of bounds before it reaches it, it is not a touchdown.
    2. The ball is thrown into the endzone and a player catches it. If both of his feet land inbounds, and he has control of the ball at that time, it is a touchdown. If part of either foot comes down on the line, it is not a touchdown, it is an incomplete pass. If both feet come down in bounds but the ball is still moving, such as being bobbled, then the player steps out of bounds, it is not a touchdown. The player never had control and it is ruled incomplete. This is why you see defensive players swiping at the ball after a player scores a touchdown. They want to try to argue he never had control if the guy drops it.

If you have the ball, you only have to get the ball across the goal line for a touchdown. You can dive and land out of bounds as long as the ball crosses the line or touches the orange pylon before you hit the ground. If you instead catch the ball in the endzone, you still have to get both feet down in the endzone for it to count as a completion and touchdown.

He was supposed to be one of the next big talents but ended up only lasting 2 seasons before he was released by the Browns. Since he wasn't that great in the NFL a lot of people would mock him by doing that gesture at him. Also, Michael Vick did go to jail for nearly 2 years for fighting dogs. He did play for the Atlanta Falcons before he went to jail.

Randy Moss mooning the Green Bay fans was a response to Packers fans actually mooning the Vikings team bus when they arrived at the stadium. Also, when a penalty is applied to the kickoff, that means the kicking team moves back however many yards the penalty was. So a 15 yard penalty would move the kickoff from the 40 back to the 25 yard line.

7:31 - Let's talk about player numbers. Sure, I could just tell you that DeSean Jackson is a wide receiver, but having some grasp of the numbering system can make things easier for you. Bear in mind that the number a player wears is based on their primary role when the number is first assigned. If the player later changes position, they can keep their number unless it conflicts with the eligible receiver rule. However, this is still an effective quick-and-dirty way to tell who is doing what job on the field while you learn more about the game.
    1-9: Quarterback, Kicker/Punter
    10-19: Quarterback, Kicker/Punter, Wide Receiver
    20-29: Runningback, Defensive Back
    30-39: Runningback, Defensive Back
40-49: Runningback, Tight End, Defensive Lineman, Linebacker, Defensive Back
50-59: Offensive Lineman (usually only the Center, but there are exceptions), Defensive Lineman, Linebacker
    60-69: Offensive Lineman, Defensive Lineman
    70-79: Offensive Lineman, Defensive Lineman
    80-89: Wide Receiver, Tight End
    90-99: Defensive Lineman, Linebacker
In the example above, the player is wearing the number 10. Since he is clearly neither the quarterback nor a kicker/punter, it is safe to assume that he is a wide receiver.

This all got started in the mid-80s when the University of Miami's Bennie Blades incepted a pass, and while running to the end zone, high fived his teammate on his way to the end zone. It is as close to the beginning of the taunting, trash talking, and swagger that started to infiltrate the college game that we can get.
The NCAA (the governing body for college football) ended up issuing a tape with examples of their new violations, most of them (well more than half) were of the University of Miami.
Most people below the age of 50 don't have a problem with some taunting. It's mostly older folks who have the biggest problem.

The taunt penalty is 15 yds back for the kicking team. The ball usually reaches the end zone or through the end zone but now it will only travel to about the 15 yard line. Meaning the returner has a better chance to get ball past the 20 yard line to start next drive

10:20 If the QB is throwing into the endzone the wide receiver has to catch it with both feet inbounds (not touching or going over the white lines in the back and on the sides of the endzone.) But if they run it in it's simple as cross the line or knock over the pylon (orange cone at the corner of the endzone).

Only the WR, TE, RB and QB are eligible to touch the ball without it making contact with a defensive player first(not counting the Center who has to snap the ball).

As for the touchdown with Detroit Lions, as long as the player has the ball and has controlled possession, and as long as the ball breaks the plain of the endzone, it is considered a touchdown. Also, if the player hits the pile-on (the orange rectangular marker at the front corners of the endzone) it is also a touchdown.

    3:51 - *Winter's Moon over Green Bay*
The Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers are long established divisional rivals. This was a January 2005 playoff game that took place at Lambeau Field, the Packers' home stadium. Randy Moss' simulated moon towards the crowd is in playful response to the tradition of some Packers fans mooning the Vikings' team buses as they exit the stadium. In a vacuum, this gesture would not garner significant negative attention (as evidenced by the other commentator's laughter), but it came during a period of Randy's career in which he had earned a reputation as something of a "problem child". The play-by-play announcer taking such phony, manufactured offense to Randy's display is a widely disliked guy named Joe Buck. He is the son of the late Jack Buck, a long-established and revered baseball commentator. Because Joe became the youngest and, almost certainly, least experienced play-by-play announcer of nationally televised MLB games-chosen for the job over more established or qualified veterans-he is often perceived, rightly or wrongly, as having ridden his father’s coattails, rather than as having earned his way up to such a high profile position. He began calling NFL games for FOX in 1994, and became the network’s premiere announcer for that sport in 2002, upon the retirement of his predecessor. Some interpret his tone and volume as condescending, and his manner often comes across as that of the guy who does not recognize that he is *not automatically* the funniest or most knowledgeable person in the room. To be fair, Joe has toned down these traits noticeably over the last decade or so, and the national audience’s resentment of him has seemed to soften as well. Even so, his once irritating nature, dubious ascent to high profile employment, and inexplicably abundant job opportunities (MLB, NFL, Golf, and even some NHL) have left many fans of sport (even if golf _could_ be referred to as such) with a lasting bitterness towards his presence. He is not regarded as malicious or provocative-just dislikable. Although the NFL did in fact fine Randy Moss $10,000 for his actions, this is likely because Buck drew so much attention to it-unnecessarily-during the broadcast. To this day, it appears that Joe is *still* the only person who ever _claimed_ to have had real problem with Randy’s gesture.
7:31 - *What position is he?*
That is DeSean Jackson, a wide receiver (WR) for the Philadelphia Eagles. Typically, players wearing numbers 10 through 19, other than quarterbacks, are wide receivers. Here is an explanation of how jersey numbers correspond to player positions in the NFL, and why: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Football_League_uniform_numbers
That may be more in-depth than you need at this point, but it will help you if you’re interested in familiarizing yourselves with the NFL. Side note about DeSean Jackson: he is no doubt a highly skilled player who, in his prime, had amazing speed and on-the-run agility that could hardly be matched-and an obnoxious, pretentious, showboating, and relentlessly self-aggrandizing douche who, out of an unceasing need for affirmation and adulation, did this: ua-cam.com/video/jXagffhiyTI/v-deo.html
7:51 - *Michael Vick* was the starting QB for the Atlanta Falcons at the time of his 2007 arrest for involvement in a dogfighting ring. So centric to the operation was he-as evidenced by kennels, training facilities, breeding apparatuses, and animal remains all on his own property-that he was one of just three parties involved to be indicted *federally,* under anti-dogfighting laws that had only recently been implemented. This article will tell you pretty much everything you might want to know: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Newz_Kennels_dog_fighting_investigation
8:26 - *Row, row, row your f%ckin' boat.*
Steve Smith, WR for the Carolina Panthers, mimics rowing a boat to mock his opponents, the Minnesota Vikings. Oh boy, the backstory to this celebration is one of my _favorites._ At 8:36, the commentator alludes, delicately, to a party that Vikings players had held aboard two boats on Lake Minnetonka. "Party", my a$$. It was effectively a pre-planned orgy that players foolishly thought would remain a secret, despite almost *none* of them making any effort whatsoever to be discreet. This article explains it with much greater accuracy than my memories of when it was in the news: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota_Vikings_boat_party_scandal
    8:44 - *T.O. takes on RayRay.*
The Philadelphia Eagles are Hosting the Baltimore Ravens in October 2004. Terrell "T.O." Owens' odd gestures are in mockery of Ravens LB (linebacker) Ray Lewis. Lewis (52 in white), a gifted, skilled and fearsome fixture on Baltimore's notoriously hard-hitting defense, was easily the most high-profile player on his team. Before contests held *in* Baltimore, it was Ray's pre-game ritual to, as the Ravens entered the field, perform some odd dance that was apparently supposed to psych out opponents or pump up the crowd. Perhaps it was intended to be reminiscent of a tribal warrior's pre-combat intimidation tactics, but to me, it was just some unnecessary, awkward, silly dance that more closely resembled performance art beyond my understanding. Back in 2004, rules allowed for a significantly more aggressive and violent style of defensive play, so, whether you like TO or not (and I don’t), it did take some guts for him to tease Ray, the guy who could most easily have scrambled TO's brains on any given play-and *who did once narrowly escape criminal responsibility for KILLING a man.* This could best be summarized as needy diva vs padded criminal.
9:15 - *Plaxico takes one to the leg.*
November 2011. Stevie Johnson, WR for the Buffalo Bills, celebrates a receiving touchdown against the NY Jets by simulating a sudden injury to his upper thigh. This is in reference to a firearm incident involving Jets WR Plaxico Burress. Back in 2008 (Burress was a member of the NY Giants at the time), Burress, while at a nightclub, famously shot himself in the thigh while attempting to prevent his Glock 9mm (for which he had no NY carry permit) from sliding down the leg of his pants. By 2011, Burress was with the Jets, and Johnson, an unremarkable player on a 5-5 team (who would ultimately lose this contest to the Jets, go 6-10 on the season, and miss the playoffs) expected everyone to readily understand his reference a full three years after the original incident. They didn’t. Sure, _I_ thought it was hilarious, but most viewers didn’t notice. Nobody ever accused Stevie Johnson of being particularly bright, but when compared to a doofus who publicly shot himself and ruined his own season...well, you know.
10:20 - *Endzone possession and touchdowns*
Yes, if you’re already carrying the ball on the field, and trying to score a touchdown, all that needs to happen is for the ball, while in your possession, to cross the imaginary vertical plane at the goal line _before_ you have stepped out of bounds or been tackled. Conversely, if you catch the ball while already _in_ the end zone, it is only considered a reception (and therefore a TD), if you make two points of contact with the ground before stepping out or being forced out. These two points don’t necessarily have to be your feet. It can be any combination of feet, hands, backside, or even your head. However, no one limb can establish these two points (ex: your right foot and right knee both touching the ground counts as only one point of contact). By nature of physics and the limits of human anatomy, however, feet are almost always the two establishing points of contact.
    10:56 - *Money Manziel*
The Washington defensive players have just recorded a *sack* against Cleveland Browns' QB Johnny Manziel (a sack is recorded when specifically the QB is tackled, while still in possession of the ball, _behind_ the line of scrimmage). Manziel, while a star player throughout high school and college, had already let success go to his head while at those less competitive levels. Throughout his college career, he often gestured the "money" symbol (rubbing one’s thumb and fingertips together), to indicate his confidence that he would one day earn a lucrative NFL contract. He was drafted in the first round, and did receive a contract that was fairly lucrative by _rookie_ standards. After years of unchecked ego and unrelenting arrogance, he ultimately never amounted to much as a professional. As has sadly happened too often, the excessive adulation of his college fans led to overconfidence and overindulgence. He was solidly unprepared for the significantly faster and vastly more complicated NFL, and his off-field issues with addiction and behavior contributed to his shortened career. He lasted only two seasons with Cleveland. After missing an entire year of play, he was signed to play in the CFL (Canada), where he played intermittently for two teams over the course of one season. His skills-developed though they were-were ill-suited to the NFL style of play. Even in his college days, this had been apparent to virtually everyone-except for the ever-dysfunctional Cleveland Browns organization, and their loyal, justifiably desperate fans. In the clip shown in this compilation, it was clear that Washington defensive players knew this as well, and were not willing to let his undue arrogance go unchecked.

What most people who don’t watch football understand is that football is chess
.. the quarterback is the king ..
the lineman are pawns .. receivers are rooks, running backs are the queen
football is a sport like nothing else .. the middle of the field is basically sumo wrestling .. you have fast guys, tall guys, fat guys, smart guys, strong guys, unathletic guys all on the field at the same time.
22 people playing at the same time

Running the ball must cross the line before your knees hit the ground. If it’s being passed both feet must come down inbounds with control of the ball

  • @kokomo9764

To get a TD only the tip of the ball has to cross the goal line. Any reception in the end zone the ball must be caught and BOTH feet must touch the ground to be considered a TD. The same ID true for any reception on the sideline. This differs from college football where only one foot must hit the ground in bounds.

If you want someone who is really good, you’ll have to watch the late afternoon game (probably around 10pm in the UK). Tony Romo is easily the best analyst in American sports. He breaks down the ins and outs in real time and why of each play. Not sure if you have a streaming service, but if you can get ahold of one of his games it’s worth it.

So on the first play, the ref said "enforced on kickoff" means that the previous penalty yardage is added or subtracted to the kickoff, so instead of kicking the ball off from the 35, it would be from the 20(In reference to the previous play) because of the 15 yard infraction...It doesnt seem like a big deal, but a lot of NFL kickers can't boot it 90 yards to make it out of the field of play.

    • @Potato-ou2gn

For a td the ball itself has to break the line. It doesn't matter about the player. Unless catching the ball in the end zone. The player must hit both feet in bounds and maintain possession of the ball

Just coming across this very late in the game (as they say) That Randy Moss "shoot to the moon" was all in fun. Those that aren't full on Vikings fans and Green Bay fans don't realize the solid rivalry that exists between these 2 teams. The "mooning" is usually done by the Packers to the Viking bus as they Vikings leave the stadium after a loss. THAT was just payback by Moss for all of those moons Vikings have seen over the years. To call his gesture "disgusting" was ignorant to say the least as had the announcer had any education on the two teams would have known that the Packers have been doing it in the parking lot to the Vikings for years.

Actually the team kicks off from the 20 instead of the 35 yard line when the penalty is assessed on the kickoff. Field position can be huge in the NFL.
