Yes, on paper. A lot of these powers are exercised on Her Majesty’s behalf by ministers - things such as issuing or withdrawing passports that, without the Royal Prerogative, would require an act of parliament each time. The Queen’s political powers nowadays are largely ceremonial, though some are actively used by The Queen such as at General Elections or are available in times of crisis and some are used by Ministers for expediency when needed. The Queen’s judicial powers are now very minimal, and there is only really one (Royal Pardon) which is used on a regular basis, with others having been delegated to judges and parliament through time. She does not make law nor does she have the capacity to directly change the Government’s policy. Her power is more about influence - a discreet nod of the head, a polite word in the ear of a Prime Minister at their weekly meeting, or a strategic patronage of a cause being overlooked by the Government - is how she can indirectly effect our world without us even knowing. The last time a British monarch can be said to force the PM to change his policy was probably in 1931. Ramsay Macdonald wanted to resign the PM when his Labour Party split on budget issues. George V convinced him to try a coalition with the Tories and Liberals, and in some accounts even refused to accept his resignation until Macdonald conferred with the other parties. Supposedly, George VI in 1945 suggested that Clement Attlee make Ernest Bevin his Foreign Secretary rather than his original choice of Hugh Dalton. However, the readiness by which Attlee agreed suggested he was thinking that way already.
Thank you so much for this video, it really made my day. I am a huge believer in Monarchy values and there's nothing like a British way of telling how the Queen is doing her Great work. Our King Michael I is one of her most beloved cousins, and our previous Queen, Queen Mary of Romania, was the grand doughtier of Queen Victoria. So I see your Queen as a dear member of my Royal Family. May God watch over our King and Queen and bless you too. Kindest regards,
I love the line, "The Queen Mother took up pistol practice in the palace grounds in case she had to make a last stand against German paratroopers." .... PEACE to ALL ... and STAY SAFE and HEALTHY.
Beautifully produced piece by the BBC, quite information rich. The film quality is exquisite, and so much fun to watch The Queen grow upon camera. As an American this is a wonderful tailored glimpse into England's current history. Thank You for posting this on UA-cam for us all to see.
asgabeler There's a whole other side to current British history, you know ... people sleeping in the streets, people losing their homes, people using food banks.
Alice I concur, as there are many sides of the USA's face. Unfortunately this is occurring all over the world in affluent countries as well as those in conflict. I simply was grateful to experience via the BBC an aspect of the world's current history.
asgabeler, Yes, it is very well done. I would hate to be without the BBC. There are a lot of things wrong with it but my goodness they do know how to put on a good show. Some of their Radio 4 dramas are without equal. xx
From California: "God Save the Queen". Ironically, one of my direct ancestors was able to get out of Britain, before James I was able to have him executed. That man was my 13th great-grandfather, Wm. Brewster.
The Monarchy truly is a necessary and important thing, being French Canadian, I am surrounded by the most anti-British people there is and this documentary really proves my point when I tell sceptics that the Monarchy and the Empire are a reuniting sense of pride, identity and most importantly, a constant, experienced way of keeping peace and well being inside a nation.
Thank you ever so kindly for posting all of these. I caught the first episode on PBS and have not been able to find the subsequent episodes until now. As a hopeful future subject I say, God save the Queen!
Nikola Novakovic ..Sadly her immediate family are a bunch of disfunctional freeloaders, she, however, is a lovely lady who has served her subjects...100 plus per- cent.
No political system is perfect. That said I feel that a constitutional monarchy is the best political system in the world. The more checks and balances in government the better.
I would trade half our congress to have her...she is a truly intelligent person, professional and knows how to manage her business, she has centuries of history from previous monarchs to refer to and gain knowledge...
The Windsors who changed their name from some German tongue twister and if not for big PR they are monsters. They are and were Nazi supporters during WW2, and Prince Edward who abdicated was a close personal friend of Adolf Hitler. They also have a lot of mental illness in their family. We need to ban these people completely from Canadian politics.
So true. She never failed to remind staff as she has had motor vehicle trouble . was good choice. I used to be able to fix my own first car. Now electronics nag you into making you see a professional expensive mechanic
I have nothing but the utmost respect for this woman, I a very distant American of Tudor Heritage I can't imagine living a life such as hers, every second of the day planned realizing that you are not a person, but property of the state, I admire her, yet do not envy her. Even though Tudor blood flows in my veins, I could not imagine a life like that....at least here I can be my own person. She is the prime example of what it's like to not be free!
I'm American and have loved the queen all my life. For me she is better than any Top Model. Her hourglass figure her Exquisite gowns class and elegance. I've never seen anything that compares to her. And I think the day that she's gone I will cry all day along with Great Britain
Enjoyed this excellent and very informative explanations by the eloquent Andrew Marr about the Queen of England, and to why she has been for so long, so successful and admired all over the world. It is very hard act to follow.
The most exemplary characteristic of Queen Elizabeth is her ability to demonstrate what it means to truly sacrifice personal comforts for the sake of service to her country. Inspirational.
there is an organisation trying to get the queen & close friends in court that have been killing babies for hundreds of years ! court dates have been stopped 3 times now !
Had Edward not abdicated he likely would have been pressured to marry and produce an heir. Creating a different line of succession and quite possibly meaning Elizabeth II and her descendants' line being so significant in the Commonwealth.
Boy, the Hand of Fate was advantageous in some respects, with The Duke and Duchess accepting the hospitality of Little Adolf, after which seemingly becoming The Reich's passionate advocate to The Royals...as well as an unpaid, unwitting intelligence asset to Die Fuhrer...Also, The Duchess, The former Wallis Warfield of Maryland, kept up a warm, intimately close, too-polite-for-words, and rather extensive social correspondence with Goebbels. VERY close friends......Yeah, Britain was fortunate to gain George VI as Sovereign.
Edward VIII might (not likely, but possible) have had children. Her parents might (again, not likely, but possible) have had a son. That is why she was always "heiress presumptive" and never "heiress apparent".
Aa an American - i adore The Queen- her traditions, he steadfastness- her no nonsense outlook and her rich knowledge- she has survived 12 United States President's ...i Respect this Qyeen This England This People...her People

Despite any controversial public opinions, here is a woman who has definitely earned her titles, all of them, & proven to the world that sensibility commitment & love not only can, but must prevail. Those who have witnessed her journey & empathized with the weight of The Crown, are blessed beyond their own imagination. When one follows the documentary & footage of her life's work, you can not help but to logically conclude that God is in control, & that any role closely linked to the "Sovereign" is one to respected, revered & protected. Thank God for her!
Love this documentary about the most awesome of Monarchs. They explained Queen Elizabeth II very well and proved that her people still need her very much. Idk why anyone under her reign would ever doubt the royal families worth. I just love her so very much. Queen Elizabeth II is a wonderful role model for all women. I'm actually jealous of Great Britain that they have such a magnificent monarch n head of state.
I consider myself one of her most loyal subjects and must say it is a sort of comfort having her on the throne. Politicians, especially prime ministers, come and go but the Monarchy is forever
I went into NYC to see the Queen and Prince Philip on the day she gave the speech they show from the UN. She also dedicated a memorial park to the British killed on 9/11. I couldn't see much of her, but was able to see Prince Philip fairly well.
What UK has is something to be proud of.... she is just the best so neutral regardless of all the loss of mother sister father but yet she smiled and carried on her duties she’s just best and maintaining the traditions the coronation and funerals and people to see something that was done 1000 years ago...... its sad her reign is coming to an end she’s been there so long
She uses it as a 'signal'. When she's ready to leave an event or dinner, she picks up her purse and then her assistants know she's ready to go. I doubt she carries much in it.
I am proud of my American republic, and will never bow to another. However: if I had to be a subject of a monarch, I would not mind Elizabeth. She understands that for enormous privilege, she needs to serve her country.
I, would prefer the monarch, to what is possibly happening here in the U.S., it feels like authoritarian lite, but we have the option of voting him out in 2020.
Richard Lawson The monarchy would give me a sense of stability and comforting continuity. I am sad that my country hasn't got a monarch. Envious of the Brits, I certainly am!
I am a great admirer of Queen Elizabeth ll. She is a truly remarkable woman! The British people and all of the British Commonwealth subjects and citizens are exceedingly lucky and blessed to have such an extraordinary Monarch, and " Representative. "
God Save our Sovereign Lady, Her Gracious Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Truly a saviour of the nation. It's so tragic that I fear we will not really appreciate what we have until it is eventually gone. To the ignorant ill educated it will only be at that point we discover just how much our gracious Sovereign has done for us and just how much she has had to sacrifice to do it. Perhaps then the short sighted jealous fools who cannot see past the trappings of her ancient burdensome office will realise the truth about the lifelong dedication and service this absolutely remarkable women has delivered. As I say it is so sad that we have to often lose what is so precious before our human fallacious allow the truth to become clear. I am blessed that although only in my early 20's I have had such an education which has endowed me with the tools to understand exactly what we have and how fortunate we are to have it.

She could end world hunger in less than a fuckin week, save millions and millions and even fuckin more millions of lives at the drop of her gold and jewel encrusted hat, stop babies being born into a life of stomach pains due to slowly dying of hunger. She is a selfish bitch who is evil and does not a fuckin thing for mankind. she should be put in the gallows and executed. Crazyman1212 What is it you do? I’m guessing when you left your local authority maintained school, assuming you attended, which would have undoubtedly been in one of those delightful education action zones, you entered a dead beat job. Or if even that minimal level of social participation put too much strain on your limited intellectual reserve, you applied for benefits, further strangling the state. Now you’ve compounded your poor education with bitterness, jealousy & cynicism. Oh & I dare say quite a bit of bloating as you troll through youtube. Full marks for mastering the interweb though, well done you!

My dad's family.got out of Hungary before ww1. Grandfather went back to marry and sneak out with my grandmother.
Well, there can be many things used to unite people that don't require vast amounts of money to prop up a contrived story.
I love Her Majesty, She is a role model in my eyes.
Thank you ever so kindly for posting all of these. I caught the first episode on PBS and have not been able to find the subsequent episodes until now. As a hopeful future subject I say, God save the Queen!
I love British Queen bcoz she is symbol of stability and unity for a nation
HM Queen Elizabeth II is a living symbol of the United Kingdom.
Nikola Novakovic ..Sadly her immediate family are a bunch of disfunctional freeloaders, she, however, is a lovely lady who has served her subjects...100 plus per- cent.
So keep her there.
@@wcstevens7 What one’s are freeloaders? Please tell me?
No political system is perfect. That said I feel that a constitutional monarchy is the best political system in the world. The more checks and balances in government the better.
SuperStrik9 the constitutional Monarchy is NOT a political systemyou're confusing it with absolute monarchy but they are different
It's indeed an amazing video which talks about the great monarchy of the world. God save the queen! A teacher from Brazil..
I would trade half our congress to have her...she is a truly intelligent person, professional and knows how to manage her business, she has centuries of history from previous monarchs to refer to and gain knowledge...
No snack Whole meal Only half? 😉
It's an inspiration to see Her Glorious Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. God Save The Queen!
I just love this video of the Queens Diamond Queen and I watched it when it was on the television. Carol Wilson
Seeing her as a young child , makes me realize how much Princess Charlotte looks like her . Its lovely .
Very many respects to HM the Queen and HRH Prince Philip. They were both in uniform in the darkest days of WWII. That alone sets them apart.
Lmao you probably think youre special having tudor blood in you but loads of people do. Youre not special
Bless Her Glorious Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. God Save The Queen!
always sorry you lost your Dad at such a young age no one will ever know him like you did.. god bless you all my life love you
They are soldiers. They fight to keep the world safe. In addition naturally since they are the royal family, we love them for that reason also.
I'm American and have loved the queen all my life. For me she is better than any Top Model. Her hourglass figure her Exquisite gowns class and elegance. I've never seen anything that compares to her. And I think the day that she's gone I will cry all day along with Great Britain
queen looks great at her age
Enjoyed this excellent and very informative explanations by the eloquent Andrew Marr about the Queen of England, and to why she has been for so long, so successful and admired all over the world. It is very hard act to follow.
BBC should make a documentary about the dedicating king of Thailand too. He celebrated his 70 year reign this year.
+kandy kandy Be more open minded. It's good for your health also.
Why the BBC? Cannot his own country make a documentary?
A young Andrew Marr, very well presented video! Thank you!
What an amazing woman H. M. The Queen is... An outstanding example for all women to look to. 👑
Thank You for posting this!!! it is a treat:)
The most exemplary characteristic of Queen Elizabeth is her ability to demonstrate what it means to truly sacrifice personal comforts for the sake of service to her country. Inspirational.
***** bit hectic, man
there is an organisation trying to get the queen & close friends in court that have been killing babies for hundreds of years !
court dates have been stopped 3 times now !
Krista Harmon Sarcasm, good for you.
***** Oh tell us something we don't know.No one want's Harper he's past done, he's over done.
***** If George Carlin knew so much, why is he dead ?
Toute mon admiration à une grande dame.J'aime beaucoup cette émission.Merci BBC pour votres travails et efforts.
"...She never would have become Queen if her uncle hadn't been a failed..." Well yes she would have, since Edward had no children, but not until 1972
@Hippie Chic keep believing that fairytale
Aa an American - i adore The Queen- her traditions, he steadfastness- her no nonsense outlook and her rich knowledge- she has survived 12 United States President's ...i Respect this Qyeen This England This People...her People
I like Princess Anne. She seems like a very nice lady.
*****
I am speaking of her spirit, her essence.
I agree princess Anne keeps it real. Love her spunk.
I have met Princess Anne in PERSON!!
The Meath
You have? Amazing!
Anthony Nunez
With all the charities that she runs and supports, I'd hardly say basically nothing.
Thank you so much for posting! Off to Episode 2!
I truly love her just an amazing remarkable Lady may she live another 100 years
God bless the Queen Elizabeth ll outstanding woman yesterday today and I admire her. Wow thank you for all your videos sincerely m.g Washington state USA
LONG LIVE THE QUEEN
Wow! This is a great documentary! It was fun to learn about the "little house". How sweet!
Fascinating documentary, thanks for sharing.
I think the Queen would be very like my grandmother in attitude. 'It's no good weeping and wailing you've just got to get on with it.'
I'm an American, but I wish others would recognize she is not just the monarch for England, but for the entire UK.
USA - the most successful democracy? Hear, hear....PS: :Thanks for uploading. I really appreciate these BCC documentary things.
God save the queen.
So nice to see her on the old trams instead of the new trams! From 57:05-57:09
She should go scandinavian style pay taxes and support herself
The Queen has the softest voice I love it
She has some really great hats
I went into NYC to see the Queen and Prince Philip on the day she gave the speech they show from the UN. She also dedicated a memorial park to the British killed on 9/11. I couldn't see much of her, but was able to see Prince Philip fairly well.
The Queen of the United Kingdom is just as much the Queen of Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other countries.
Andrew Marr had a stroke a while ago.So I hope he gets well soon and gets back on the TV.
Love the queen. She is adored and wearing lovely bright clothes
God Save the Best of UK : Her Majesty The Queen
wow she was a pretty women.... impressed by her young beauty
What UK has is something to be proud of.... she is just the best so neutral regardless of all the loss of mother sister father but yet she smiled and carried on her duties she’s just best and maintaining the traditions the coronation and funerals and people to see something that was done 1000 years ago...... its sad her reign is coming to an end she’s been there so long
she's so cute. love how she carries her purse around herself!
She uses it as a 'signal'. When she's ready to leave an event or dinner, she picks up her purse and then her assistants know she's ready to go. I doubt she carries much in it.
I'm American and I would move across the pond in a heartbeat!!
God Save The Queen :)
getredytagetredy do you include yourself here
The Queen did a great job. Her eldest grandson appears credible so far and could carry it on.
I am proud of my American republic, and will never bow to another. However: if I had to be a subject of a monarch, I would not mind Elizabeth. She understands that for enormous privilege, she needs to serve her country.
Proud now, in 2018???
I, would prefer the monarch, to what is possibly happening here in the U.S., it feels like authoritarian lite, but we have the option of voting him out in 2020.
Richard Lawson The monarchy would give me a sense of stability and comforting continuity. I am sad that my country hasn't got a monarch. Envious of the Brits, I certainly am!
@@richardlawson4317 lol
Joanne Nugent shut the fuck up.
God Bless and continued good health to Her Majesty!
Long live the queen x
I am a great admirer of Queen Elizabeth ll. She is a truly remarkable woman! The British people and all of the British Commonwealth subjects and citizens are exceedingly lucky and blessed to have such an extraordinary Monarch, and " Representative. "
She is beautiful inside & out ❤
SHE IS THE QUEEN OF UK AND THE COMMONWEALTH ,NOT JUST ENGLAND
I am blessed that although only in my early 20's I have had such an education which has endowed me with the tools to understand exactly what we have and how fortunate we are to have it.
sacrifice....ancient burden....LMFAO!!!
What a load of horse shit!
***** your wasting your time talking too a royalist, they would kill 1000 babies and use them to build a bridge over a river so her royal cuntness could cross without getting her feet wet.
***** Exactly mate, the queen owns either 1/6 or 1/7 of all the world's land. WE THE FUCKIN PEOPLE shouldn't be living in such an unfair world when kunts like this have everything and do NOTHING!!! if you think i',m too 'out there' suck a royal cock I won't apologise for my beliefs when I'm preachin nothing but truth.
Howay then, I'm asking for spamming/ hateful comments from people who would take a bullet for these savage animals, let me have both barrels...
Crazyman1212
What is it you do? I’m guessing when you left your local authority maintained school, assuming you attended, which would have undoubtedly been in one of those delightful education action zones, you entered a dead beat job. Or if even that minimal level of social participation put too much strain on your limited intellectual reserve, you applied for benefits, further strangling the state. Now you’ve compounded your poor education with bitterness, jealousy & cynicism. Oh & I dare say quite a bit of bloating as you troll through youtube. Full marks for mastering the interweb though, well done you!
She is an expert diplomat, selling britain abroad. She doesnt make deaLs, but brings pride, strength, friendship and will bring support for britain in the future because of a cemented friendship and diplomacy, a sense of self- identity and national unity.
