  • OVERLORDS OF THE UFO is a cryptic "documentary" film from 1976 concerned with aliens, inter-dimensional travelers, and the presence of undersea kingdoms beneath our oceans. Brian Krey joins us to help make sense of it all! The truth is out there, but is it in this film?

Another fun chat. Takes me back to the time when the Bermuda Triangle was going to make us all disappear.

My particular memory is of a pic called THE OUTER SPACE CONNECTION, which promised that we puny humans had received a message from OUTER SPACE, guaranteeing that we would receive a visit from the message senders in 2010.
Needless to say, we did NOT, in fact, receive a visit from extraterrestrials in 2010, and I had to confront my feelings about the fact that my life was now a lie. A play about human tragedy should be written about this; pretty sure that, were Eugene O'Neill still around, that play would be on Broadway as we speak. (Well, type.)
ADDENDUM: The more you two talk about this movie, the more I want it. When you were talking about the Bad Watercolors and the limited animation, I was reminded of HEAVY METAL and the Boba Fett cartoon on the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL.

Chariots of the Gods was huge back in the day, both the book and film.

Brian mentions GG Allen. I only heard of this guy because he put on a show back in 84 in a small neighboring town next to me that is still mentioned today. GG decided to crap all over the stage and throw it at the fans. He was a very sick individual. He made an appearance on Jerry Springer.

Can't get away today with that kind of entertainment. Everybody has gotten so sensitive. Somebody would be "offended" and he'd be canceled. 🙄

I LOVE THIS MOVIE. This is probably the first and only analysis that I've come across for it (not that I've looked hard). Have it on VHS. Such a hidden treasure. It gives me "In Search Of" vibes.

Hey Heath! Always enjoy your chats with Brian. I don't think i've seen this 'documentary', I was at first confusing this with 2 similar movies: Mysteries of the Gods (1976) narrated by William Shatner and UFOS: It has begun (1979) narrated by Rod Serling. They are really a sub-genre of mondo movies: ponderous narration over stock-footage.

It really is an Ed Wood quality documentary. I used to watch it as a kid and found it on UA-cam a few years back. Very nostalgic. Also you can make a drinking game out of every time the narrator asks “Who are the overlords of the UFO?”

These are definitely documentaries - just not about UFOs. These types of films are real cultural snapshots. If you take a step back, "Roller Boogie" is a documentary. They take you right back to a specific time and place and show us who we were.
As always, a real fun conversation.

I also love this. I've got two copies on VHS from VCI Home Video. Can't beat it for it's type. Close runners-up would be anything UFO-related from Delineator Films (Wheeler Dixon stuff). If it's more serious fodder I'm after, Milton William ("Bill") Cooper is the ticket. Cheers! Great vid

I should preface this by saying that I am in no way an expert in the history of home media, but…
The 1978 VCI Home Video release of Overlords of the U.F.O. is a very early home media release of a UFO “documentary.” The first?
Brandon Chase’s UFO’s Are Real soon followed and was released on a Fotomat videocassette in 1979.

Alpha related question: In his audio commentary for Horror of the Blood Monsters, Sam Sherman made note that he (at least at the time of recording) still had the film elements for Tagani, the Filipino film used within the Al Adamson feature. Sherman lamented the material was just sitting there and hoped a label would pick it up. Given their relationship with Sherman, is Tagani on Alpha's radar or is it too obscure? Perhaps Brian can address this on a later appearance.

Back in the mid-1980's when I was in college, my college friends and I created a drinking game around this movie. Every time the narrator said, "of the UFO", everyone had to take a drink. Luckily, I kinda cheated and took smaller shots, so I was the only person conscious when the movie was over.

I remember my mom and a lady friend of her took me to see Chariots of Gods in the middle seventies in Lima, Peru. And i was fascinated (I was maybe 8 years old) then back home I told my dad about all the strange things and he debunked one by one. At the end I like the phenomena but I don't believe on it. And remember in 1977 came Close Encounters of the Third Kind, nevertheless! Greetings from Sweden!

Fun conversation to listen to. Hopefully Alpha Video sells a few copies of Psychopaths from the video! I randomly searched on the Terrorise name and interestingly, the director put a video up on UA-cam just last week discussing his dismay over the situation and explaining the film a bit more -- specifically the history, the different cuts, and how Terrorise isn't exactly the same movie as Psychopaths. Not sure if it's appropriate to link to that in the comments, but it's a short video for anyone who wants to seek it out.

Of course, this is a total tangent on the topic of this video (UFO "documentaries" from the 70s era), but I was just curious about the movie Brian brought up. It seems like this director's work was released in a blu-ray box set by SRS last year (2023) and that impacts his ability to release other films (which may be differing cuts). In this video he describes the different cuts of the original film and how he feels they are different works.
